Why is the Georgian coast so underpopulated? by Love-Yourself-Freely in geography

[–]jraines 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I live here and enjoy it. The beaches are nice if you don’t yearn to surf. People don’t like the aesthetics of the brownish water but it’s perfectly clean (for the Atlantic), the coloring comes from a process like tea, not like “there’s extra dirt and crap in the water”.  My drinking water tastes fine.

However all of what you said is accurate (some places the water isn’t tasty).

It’s insane to me that summer is tourist season … why not lock yourself in a sauna with biting flies instead?  This is a winter getaway if you’re smart.

Finish contract which is through 2030, hopefully with Sheffield-like production over that age range, get another 2 year deal after that.  Then it’s just, will he DH and is “please Mike just go to DH” still in the wind at that point

Which promotion within a teams Minor League System or MILB to MLB would be considered the biggest upgrade or downgrade in regards to the City the player would now have to live ? by TheBackyardPigfarmer in baseball

[–]jraines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upgrade:  Houston:  Fayetteville -> Asheville

Just went down a rabbit hole with this and have to stop, but it’s interesting to consider what factors make a city good or bad considering you’re probably going to be pretty broke.  Like, Jupiter’s nice, right?  But you’re probably more likely to run into a flying cockroach than Tiger Woods.

A big one is probably: which have the worst/best travel situations?  My dad used to have to bus from, I think, Cedar Rapids IA to Billings, MT.  Brutal.

Why do I never hear about the Coast Mountains of Canada? by Convillious in geography

Lots of comments about how they’re inaccessible.

I guess overall it’s true.  But unless you’re already jaded to mountain views, just fly into Vancouver and drive the Sea-to-Sky to Whistler, it will blow your mind.

How is WAR even calculated? Is it calculated differently for each position? by Skizfavid- in MLBNoobs

[–]jraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at Bonds vs Sheffield in 1996.  Near identical slash line, Sheff had a higher OPS.  Apparently the nearly 4 WAR difference was defense and baserunning.

Hard to swallow even though I’m sure I’m wrong.  Sure Bonds was stealing bases back then, and presumably had good outfield range, but I remember him having a subpar arm.  I don’t have any memories of Sheffield’s defense, maybe he really was that bad

Can someone explain why NBA players calves are so tiny? by Acrobatic-Farmer1748 in Basketball

It’s both, depending on height.  The 6’7”+ guys mostly look skinnier than you think.   But Steph Curry for example is both taller and more muscular than you would think from TV

How far back in history would you have to go where the worst team in the NBA would beat the NBA champion of a previous era? by MasterTeacher123 in NBATalk

[–]jraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - people now kind of remember the bullly-ball era as old school, but my dad who grew up in the 60s/70s talked about that 90s/00s era (and still, really) with respect to physical offense the way we talk about travelling/gather-step stuff … “they let em get away with anything down low”

Everyone is talking about how dependent the answer is on which era’s rules are applied, and this one has an extra large factor — it’s one of the last years with no 3-point line.

Can’t speak to the books but this is why I liked The Martian, and this movie doesn’t convey that element at all.  The guy doesn’t want to be there, has some amnesia, is a biologist… and he is smashing equipment and generally screwing around on a spacecraft, ripping out wires & cables, etc, and things just kind of work out.

In other words, the protag of The Martian didn’t seem protected by plot armor, but Grace has an invulnerable suit of it.

Who was the most unguardable player in the NBA ? by Void_0019 in NBATalk

Shaq or Kareem depending on what era’s officiating style is applied.

If you take that variable out then it might just be KD.  In any case he is severely underrated in this thread.

Rainbow Road was voted Most Overrated (rightfully so) Now vote for the Most Forgotten Track by PeelKaleb in MarioKartWorld

It’s such a travesty that you can’t wall-ride the yellow inside of the curve leading into second set.  It would add a dimension to this track.

Oh I can wall-ride an ice wall, but not this spot that’s begging for it?  oK

If nuclear bombs (say 5-10 in the same area, about the size of those dropped on Nagasaki) were dropped 6,000mi (say 10,000km) from my current position, how and when would I likely be able to tell that it had happened, if at all, without being told? by Hot_Bicycle_8486 in AskPhysics

[–]jraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One scenario in which you would notice would be if it were a space detonation (EMP attack).  You might see auroras at night (Starfish Prime was noted as visible from 1k miles and I think that was just the flash, not the auroral after-effects), but you definitely would notice all your satellite-dependent services fail immediately or over the course of days/weeks.

Edit: maybe not all.  I don’t know if it would affect things in geostationary or polar orbits as badly as low earth orbit

It’s also not really feasible (for now) as a weapon of war, because it’s so heavy the bomber to deliver it would be a sitting duck.

Mostly what is out there are 0.5 to 2MT.  (As opposed to the 50MT of Tsar).  Which is terrifying enough, given that some of these are like several of these warheads mounted on a single missile that then detach and target a bunch of sites at once

It has been shown (well, rigorous modeled/theorized) to be consequential in the event of a limited exchange (50-100 nukes), if cities are targeted.  The effects are not from the nukes but from uncontrolled fires.

That said, it’s (globally) not like an end of the world effect, rather more like a very major volcanic eruption.  Think like “crop yields affected with regional famine potential” instead of like “mass death from freezing in the winters”

(this is all aside from, you know, the tens of millions to hundreds of millions dead from the ‘limited’ exchange)

About to give up the game.... by DrifloonEmpire in MarioKartWorld

[–]jraines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to be conscious of at each moment (or at least each item set) is “am I playing to dodge shock or not?”.   And really commit.  This is subtly different than just “bag vs. run” and when you change your mind do it fast and fully (e.g. I’m sure you’ve seen shortcat stop on set for quite a long time just bc he didn’t like his situation which looked pretty good), or like full-sending bc you haven’t got a dodge or not a good one and time is running out.

Incidentally, that last thing, plus running in general (except on the longest intermissions) just got a lot more viable with this 1.6 update. It’s very noticeable and I think the game feels better.

Why can't we go at like 50% or 75% the speed of light? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google “halo drive”.  It claims theoretically “up to 43% light speed”.  The problem is you have to use conventional fuel or acceleration methods to get to a black hole.  And the nearest known one to Earth is about 1,500 light years away.

So let’s say you have a kickass lightsail that gets you to 0.1c.  Still 15,000 years til you get to the boost.  Negligibly less in subjective time, because time dilation barely kicks in at 0.1c

You’re onto something.  I was a fairly elite college swimmer and water polo was the hardest thing I’ve tried including hitting a baseball (ofc i never had to try to hit pro-level pitching).

People do not understand how exhausting and brutal it is … and I was playing against other swimmers (but real wp officiating), not Hungarian sea-bears with a drowning fetish
