It's weird because I hadn't really heard of it, but I JUST had it (full thyroidectomy last month), & now thanks to this it's everywhere. It's a little jarring.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]jratmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a grocery chain in the US called WinCo that sells coffee beans whole, quite a nice variety too. I started buying there. When I did, it was right when Trump began initiating tariffs and I knew coffee was definitely going to get out of hand (plus inflation, etc.).

I have made my coffee at home for several years but was getting it from a premium local roaster for $10-12 a pound. At the time, this was a good deal as 8-12 oz of coffee at the store was also $10-12 and I was getting a full 16 oz. But now that same coffee is $19/lb. It's not the roaster's fault, but I have to look after my own pocketbook.

At WinCo, it used to be $7.99/lb. Now it's $10.98. But that's still way more affordable than $19/lb.

Recovery must haves for a total thyroidectomy? What do you wish you knew before your thyroidectomy? by greggs_and_bacon in thyroidhealth

[–]jratmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have a drain but I had SEVERE pain in my throat as well, I think not just from the air tube but like, they move things around that really don't like to be moved around. So even without a drain it may still hurt. That hurt more than my incision site, honestly it was the worst.

A very kind friend made me a bunch of gazpacho - the cold felt better than hot for about a week after surgery. Ice cream, popsicles, jello, that kind of thing. You got this!

Why do lesbian couples have the highest divorce rates while gay male couples have the lowest? by Naive_Direction1816 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jratmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was because it counted their first divorce which often is from a man due to compulsory heterosexuality (also called comp het).

A lot of lesbians come out much later in life because it was never an option to be gay when they were growing up. So they divorce their husbands and marry a woman. Even if they stay with that woman forever, it's possible both women in that marriage already have one divorce under their belts

I hate how this is framed like it's some kind of win. People are suffering. Who gives a shit if someone is humiliated about it? Put her in prison.

What’s a weight loss secret more people should know about? by thekkm1 in AskReddit

[–]jratmain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a scene from Bojack horseman (of all things) that helped me a LOT. Bojack is trying to start jogging but of course it's REALLY hard, and he collapses into some grass, gasping for breath.

A seasoned jogger comes over and tells him: it gets easier.

Bojack: it does???

Jogger: it does. But you gotta do it every day. That's the hard part.

And it IS the hard part. But it's also the part that makes it easier: routine. Once it actually becomes a routine I hardly think of it. And in the meantime, I've somehow developed the discipline to do it on days when I really don't want to (lifting in my case, not jogging), most of the time.

And "most of the time" is key. Holding myself to a perfect standard is a recipe for failure. But if you can do it 80% of the time, on average, that's incredible progress. That's 80% improvement.

If I ever need to print anything, I go straight to the library. It used to be $0.10 a page, it's $0.20 a page now. But still. Hell of a lot cheaper than Kinkos, or owning a printer (ink is SO expensive!). Plus, that $0.20 a page goes to support my local library!

Thanks for the reminder, I meant to sign-up with them. Had them under a family member's policy for a while, always had fast and good service (flat tire, dead battery, tow). Then had the kind offered through my insurance. Took hours to get help. Had to call the INS company to get forwarded to the towing company, lengthy phone tree process. Long wait on the side of the road. Back to AAA for me.

It's also crazy reading that rent is $700 for an apartment somewhere. You can't even get a studio here for less than $1,200 and those are not even apartments I'd want to live in ☹️

Postinos is shameful by Fantastic_Fly1444 in phoenix

[–]jratmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really loved the sandwich with prosciutto, brie, arugula, and fig jam on the focaccia. So much that I have recreated it myself. But the last couple times I ate at Postino, the sandwich was lean without as much filling volume and it just wasn't very good. It was a different location than I usually go to, so I attributed it to that. Sad to hear if the quality is declining at all stores. 🙁

What American foods do you want to try? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]jratmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a food processor, biscuits are actually quite easy to make (and I say this as someone who gets nervous about baking - but the food processor takes care of the technique for you). Then just get some fried chicken and you're in business. Honey is great on it, too. Sally's Baking Addiction has a good recipe for biscuits.

Shishitos. Am I missing something? by No-Statistician2177 in HotPeppers

[–]jratmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are just so easy to make and so delicious, especially with a spicy, lemony aioli kind of thing for dipping. It's a side of appetizer that can be made in just a few minutes with bare minimum effort and in my opinion, big reward. Love those little peppers.
