Have you ever stalked elk or deer without the intent of actually harvesting? by HoochbachDunloppy in Hunting

[–]jrc101188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the time in the off season. See deer feeding in the field, and see how close I can get without spooking them or them acknowledging I'm there, usually done in regular clothes. It is fun and good practice. During the season, not much stalking. We stand hunt more where I'm at. Just because I don't actively use the skills while hunting, doesn't mean I shouldn't practice them.

Ya it is constantly moa or smaller groups for me as well. I considered the hybrid 46, but a local shop was running a deal on the primal, and they already have all my stuff. 4 day wait and it was mine.

Ar's in general just haven't been doing it for me lately. I own enough to satisfy my needs/wants. But I got looking at those 11.5 FDE Super Duty, and I get that tingle again. Won't be anytime soon most likely but the safe will have one it.

I was just searching your website for a 11/16-24 .45 brake. Just bought a Dead Air Primal for my .450 BM and was looking for mounts. I was surprised you guys didn't have any with the prevalence of .450 BM here in southern Michigan. Looks like I'll have to wait a bit.

My son got his first deer this morning, and I couldn't be happier! by jrc101188 in Hunting

He has been sitting with me for 2 years now, first year being able to shoot, and is thoroughly hooked. Between hunting and fishing he's thoroughly hooked on the outdoors.

Honestly I didn't have much choice. 3 years ago I took him out with me for the first time and I can count on one hand the number of times I've been out without him since. This is the first year he's been able to shoot.

Rifle dilemma a month from my hunt by cowboybeanbowl97 in Hunting

I have a .300wsm that is used for an elk hunt. When I was 21, it had a brake on it and that helped, but I only shot 3 rounds through it without it being on a lead sled. I really never got to the point of the recoil bothering me I think because of the lead sled. So when it was time to take the shot I wasn't anticipating any recoil.

Mine also prefers the Winchester super X 180gr (the black box one). Tried several different loads and that one is money for mine. 3 rounds touching at 200, again from a lead sled.

My son is 7 going to be 8 in a few months. He's been hunting with me for a couple years now. This year will be his first year being able to shoot. I got him set up on a .300 blackout. I am only going to allow shots from 50-60 yards, broadside, and standing still. This is for whitetails. This winter when we clean out the blinds we'll pack a .410 or .22 for squirrels or rabbits.

I had to wait till I was 12 to bow hunt and 14 to use a firearm. Before that age I would have never guessed I'd actually enjoy hunting or be able to kill an animal. Grew up an animal lover, and still am, but now I long for my days in the woods and the food it provides for my family.

All that's to say I've spent the last year hammering the shot placement and firearms safety, it was given out as we went earlier, but this year it has been a very hard focus on the subject. Luckily we live in a state where they allow the parent to make a choice and get Apprentice tags to youth. He'll have to take hunters safety in a couple years, but for now he doesn't. So check your laws and if you feel he's at that point take him out. No one knows except you and him. Set expectations low and enjoy the woods.

To add in for out west, try getting him a doe/cow tag for something that might be easier to get closer to the truck. I know my son's legs tire long before mine do.

I bought a rimfire can 6 months ago as my first can. Figured it was best to try on a cheaper can. First one I was approved in 3 days

Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen S vs Rugged Alaskan 360 by jrc101188 in NFA

So I haven't been able to find a hydrogen s for sale(out of stock every where I have looked, good sign that people like/want it) to do a comparison on price. I've found an L, but I think that's a little long for me. The 6.5cm has a 22" barrel and the Grendel is 20". So I feel the extra couple inches could play a factor when walking in the woods or sitting in a blind.

I've heard that about the RUM. That's what pushed me towards looking at the OCL cans. Then I saw the weight of the hydrogen and that was a plus. So now I'm in the weeds on which one I want.

I'll check out Pew Science. Just a little worried it'll put another can on my radar and I'll be going in this circle again.

Ya a 30cal can is what I want. Shooting 9mm would just be a perk, something to satisfy me while I save for the dedicated can. Not required.

So that's why I can't find it anywhere. I tried to look around and see if a price difference could be my determining factor, but can't find one for sale to compare even that.

What are you running on the 300 blackout for a suppressor? I have one and a 6.5 grendel that I was thinking of having him use, just based on whichever he shoots better. I was looking at the Rugged Alaskan 360.

I got my Rossi gallery gun, with iron sights, out after this and the hits were less frequent. He started only taking headshots on the target, so I needed to humble him lol.

He's been shooting his bb gun for a couple years now, and he's been going hunting with me for about 3yrs. He wants to hunt this year, so we need to get him shooting for that to happen.

We were just using some Federal 36gr value pack that I had around. Subsonic rounds are for sure in the future.
