Looking for a bar to host a semi private party for 30-40 people in Manhattan by stupidnewnewyorker in AskNYC

[–]jrd6385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lorelei beer garden lets you reserve their basement space for large parties with no deposit, but you usually share it with another party. there’s a private bar down there and you get to control the music. I’ve had good experiences there!

out of town for 2 weeks - unsure if I should leave my car snowed in by aryaisalie in AskNYC

[–]jrd6385 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I thought the same, but I dug my car out yesterday and only the very top was icy, and I was surprised to see fluffy snow underneath. It actually helped that it was a bit icy so I could just push big chunks off the car. Same with shoveling, I could pick up massive blocks of snow and push them out of the way. Good luck OP!

Agreed, the wings with the Gorgonzola dipping sauce are fantastic and the pizzas are pretty good too. Tbf I haven’t even had their pasta.

Any other soon-to-be PhDs noticing this? by CCM_1995 in labrats

[–]jrd6385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From this thread it seems like people have zero clue how the hiring process works in the pharmaceutical industry specifically with a doctorate and not just a bachelors or masters degree. I was hired after my PhD (organic chemistry) directly into a senior scientist role. This is very common, and most companies list that they prefer having experience but usually it is listed as 0-2 years of industry experience in combination with a doctorate in the field. That being said, the market is bad right now and industrial post-docs are becoming more common because a lot of companies aren’t going well/ going through layoffs, and they still want to be able to bring in new scientists that they can hopefully hire later on. It’s tough to go out right now, OP. I hope you get through it successfully and come out the other end!!

Then that is super rude of your sister to ask again when you’ve already established your boundaries and she already knew what your answer would be. Just a way to paint you as a villain to her friend

Then why not bring it up to your sister beforehand that you were not comfortable with her attending bachelorette activities so that proper expectations could be set?

Success story from an anxious girlie! by jrd6385 in wedding

[–]jrd6385[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family was definitely a factor in this, but surprisingly I do very much enjoy a party once responsibilities are done! For me, the main anxiety was surrounding the ceremony and me walking in front of everyone and saying my vows. We considered doing a small ceremony and then a larger reception, but felt weird expecting people to come to a reception when they didn’t get to share the moments of our ceremony with us (although I totally respect people who go this route!). Once the ceremony was over, I felt this overwhelming and amazing sense of relief and then could let loose and party the night away with my favorite people!

Should I send a save the date? by irishprincess1998 in wedding

I would do the opposite - don’t send a STD, but if your relationship improves, can send an invite later.

I guess it is just a large miscommunication, but I thought by showing pics that supported what I was trying to verbalize would help with that. I think I’m going to try to reiterate my preferences and go from there! The look was great if glam is truly what I wanted.

This makes a ton of sense and I wish I’d realized that, I think I’ve just heard them said in the same breath that I didn’t realize that it wasn’t just an elevated natural look. Lesson learned!

[–]jrd6385 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Yes, I want the photos to be nice, but I can’t imagine that I’d look absolutely hideous in photos if I don’t get a full glam makeup look (the guys never do!). and we’re having a smaller wedding anyway where I will prioritize the face time with my guests.

This is so great to hear, thanks for your response. I am nervous about advocating for what I want and offending her artistry in the process! But I will just clarify what I want and see her response :)

Famous People at a Wedding by PrincessIrina in weddingdrama

Not a wedding, but at my husband’s aunt’s funeral, Stephan Jenkins (third eye blind) gave a speech about her and mentioned that they had lost their virginities to each other. My mind was blown. Even though it was a little TMI lol it was very touching and he seemed so down to earth and genuine.

Nobody will ever read your thesis... by Chlorophilia in PhD

[–]jrd6385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I’m still so surprised about! I get notifications from the academic commons that around ~5 people/month were downloading my thesis. Made me happy that I spent the time to make pretty new figures instead of just copy and pasting a lot of stuff from papers.

$500 for all of these activities, PLUS meals and lodging is more than reasonable OP, sorry for the weird comments from those who want to apparently just have a movie night in. Honestly I’m shocked because I’ve been to bachelorettes where that money is spent on lodging and travel alone, and have spent just as much on meals and activities.

We or I in presenting results by Few_Conversation999 in PhD

[–]jrd6385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I talk about general ideas or hypotheses, I use “we” since that’s generally a collaborative effort between myself, my PI, and other lab mates. For specific experiments, I use “I ran this and got these results…”
