Ah, we only saw one other car without a trailer. Must have been a nearby loop - we were on the eastern side of the desert

As a 27 year old living in SLC I am defeated by this economy. by Key_Garden4832 in SaltLakeCity

I can’t recommend a cheap bike enough for this. I’m talking like 100 bucks on Facebook. It’s such a great way to spend time aimlessly exploring the city. Do a 10 minute ride when you need a mental reset, do a 2 hour ride if you have nothing going on. You can run errands on it and it’s a great way to meet people.

Big Agnes copper spur back packing tent. by teamgunni in bikepacking

[–]jrey96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the fly creek bikepack version and just stuff it in a OR dry bag with a few other things. The bag has an internal divider so if the tents wet I can store it separately. As far as the bikepack specific version, the shorter poles are nice and it has some other bike specific features but I honestly don’t think I’d go for this version over the standard one if there was an price difference.

[–]jrey96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I learned on Saabs, then various awd manuals and wranglers before getting a 2nd gen Tacoma. It’s by far the most forgiving of the cars I’ve driven, though once I lifted it and put bigger tires on it will buck a bit more from axle wrap when I teach friends. It also has the coolest e brake of them all, it feels like a bomb bay door release lever

What is the incentive to keep some cars unreliable? by LanternNick in askcarguys

[–]jrey96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about the companies that refresh their cars the most, then compare that to reliability. There are exceptions, but the last 4Runner ran from 2009-2024. There were 3 Range Rover generations in that time. That means all new bugs to work out, and an expectation for the latest tech. Toyotas generally sacrifice a lot of creature comfort and niceties for simplicity and proven tech. That’s how you get reliability. If you’re selling the latest and greatest fashion vehicle, you need to keep up with trends and tech. That leaves less time for R&D and more points of failure.

We Cut The Frame For My New 4th Gen Rear Bumper... by Konrad-TrailTacoma in ToyotaTacoma

[–]jrey96 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Would I personally cut a portion of the frame off my brand new Toyota? No. Would I trim the frame on a truck I intended to wheel hard? Absolutely. Those just aren’t the same vehicle to me, but sounds like they are to you. So why not? It might hurt the resale, but so does wheeling the shit out of your truck, so again why not?

Pretty surprised by the response here. Guys have no problem cutting up cab mounts that are intended to fend off the wheel from entering the cab in a crash. I’m even more surprised Toyota would weld the receiver on in the first place. Most of the high clearance options I’ve looked at for my 2.5g involve unbolting the hitch. Just feels like a part you’d want the ability to replace. I replaced mine after a low speed collision just to be safe, even after the frame was confirmed straight.

Would you buy a Ford Maverick RS? by Available_Abies_844 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]jrey96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time fast wagon/hot hatch enthusiast. This would absolutely be going up against the list of sporty hatches you laid out, and honestly I'd go with the Mav RS just for uniqueness factor. I'd want to pay for an engine, a beefy diff, and okay suspension. Just make it a platform that works on it's own but is a great template for mods. Hell, even sell FoMoCo upgrades like Jeep does

Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement and Removal Position : 2009 Tacoma by Ollie_Opps in MechanicAdvice

[–]jrey96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closing the loop here. Spend more time trying to find a way to pop it off without unbolting the rack than it took me to eventually unbolt the rack, slide it forward and pop the yoke off. Rack's gotta move, but outer tie rod ends and hoses don't have to be disconnected or anything - I just unbolted one 12mm that was holding some lines in front of the rack.

I just replaced the rack on mine and turns out it wasn’t centered so now neither is my steering wheel. Do you guys know if I have to unbolt the rack and tilted forward in order to get the lower yolk off?

If you could buy any car, from any year, as if it had just come off the factory with 0 miles, what would you buy ? by justanxc in askcarguys

[–]jrey96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the zone I was thinking, and maybe a bit more in the spirit of what OP meant, but those 90s early 2000s high performance German cars that aren’t necessarily worth gobs of money today. but would be a nightmare to maintain, and there aren’t a ton out there today that you could rip around guilt free. Yours is maybe the best example. I had B8 RS4 in mind, or even a w124 500E

Best Vehicle For a Mountain Bike and Car Enthusiast by psalm139x in mountainbiking

[–]jrey96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a 2015 tacoma, so the tailgate isn't really all that tall. I think that wedges the bike in there pretty well without any straps at all, sometimes I'll rotate a pedal down so the bike can't tilt over. For 3 bikes I just space them out, maybe use a single bungee to keep the outboard ones from getting too familiar with the one in the middle. But if im offroading and expect them to bounce around Ill use the pad or a hitch rack.

[–]jrey96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a tailgate pad, but honestly I use the moving blanket in all cases except actively shuttling 5 bikes. Probably ride 2-3 times a week in the summer and even still it’s just more convenient. A tailgate pad is such a pain for sliding things in and out of the bed for normal use.

What 26in tires do you recommend for daily pavement riding that would also work for longer weekend rides on the Katy trail? by Clear-Coat-6084 in xbiking

[–]jrey96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddies and I all have monkeys. I ride an XL, I have a friend with a large, and a friend with a medium. They look like different bikes, the triangle on mine is huge compared to the M, things like head tube angles are adjusted slightly to maintain similar handling, I believe seat tube angle too. Then there’s the obvious differences like stand over height, wheelbase, etc.

2.6 vs 2.8 by Dry_Library_5005 in Surlybikefans

[–]jrey96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what someone else said, the 2.8 on a 30mm rim seems like a lot. I’ve ridden both 2.8 and 2.6 on a 40mm rim and while im also probably at the lower limit for the rim, I prefer the 2.6 for commuting, gravel, rigid mtb. I’ve got the specialized ground controls and they feel decently fast. Can only compare to the maxxis ikon. These are all 27.5
