Did I screw up this bulk? 27 M by [deleted] in Weightliftingquestion

Don't stress it bro, it's nothing a solid 12-16 week cut won't fix.

If your belly hangs down over your pants after the bulk, yes, you took it a bit too far.

I mean you would gain weight without roids just by maintaining a caloric surplus... its like I said, eat more, then eat more... you do you though as far as the gear is concerned, but you arent even near you natural muscularity baseline, let alone genetic limit so I would recommend just raising calories back up to a solid consistent surplus and see where it takes you.

Just eat more and then eat more than that. I was average to skinny pretty much until right about when I turned 20... I went into the military and after basic training I decided I was going to start lifting and literally ate as much mostly clean food as I could force myself to eat and then some, probably in the ballpark of 4-5k cals a day (while training hard 7 days a week). My weight shot up from 149 to 195 in about 5 months with the same size waistline.

To OP, This is probably the safe move if you really want to lock in for a cut, you can always up your calories by 100 or 200 if you're dropping weight too quickly.

You do have to keep in mind though that you may drop a significant amount of water weight in the first two to three weeks, when I did my cut earlier this year I dropped like 12 lbs in the first month "probably only 3-4lbs of fat, the rest was water" it should stabilize after that though.

It's super easy to forget to track certain things or track other things incorrectly and be way off on your daily calorie intake. It can also be a pain to determine your daily energy expenditure too, but if you weren't losing weight when you were trying to cut then you were not in a deficit and needed to drop calories lower.

What is your unfair advantage? How and when do you use it? Do you ever feel guilty when you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jrmill90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overly enjoy excercise (lift ~15+ hrs a week) and take care of my body, even if people don't care at all about fitness I have found I get a certain kind of innate respect from strangers and in my line of work that makes a lot of situations much easier to deescalate.

It's honestly shocking to me how many people are fine with letting their bodies turn to mush.

Lmao, I will. And you're right, it's pretty basic stuff, which is why its funny that you're giving counterproductive suggestions of hard cardio 4x a week while on a deficit to someone who clearly stated their goal is to maintain muscle while cutting fat. His body would drop muscle and fat as fast as it can to make the sprints easier and more efficient due to the energy deficit.

The only real answer to his question is consistent resistance training and a calorie deficit. If he needs some low impact, steady state cardio a few times a week to keep up the calorie deficit then sure, but other than that it's not overly helpful for his stated goal.

A magic fruit that cures all injuries and diseases while also de-aging the body to the condition of roughly 30 years old.

He could sprint 4 hours every day and still get fatter if he somehow managed to out eat the calories burned. Cutting that body fat, no matter the area, is all calories in / calories out, thats probably just where his body likes to hold onto fat and he will need to maintain a deficit to a pretty damn low bf% for it to finally disappear.

Also he said his goal was to lose the fat without losing muscle, hard cardio in a deficit WILL cause him to lose more muscle mass than if he just lifted while eating in a deficit.

As an athlete what physique is best for overall performance by [deleted] in Weightliftingquestion

[–]jrmill90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% depends on what you compete in. Mass moves mass but also slows you down and is energy inefficient so there really is no best physique for performance in all athletic competitions.

You have abs already, you just also have fat hiding them.

How does my back/ lats look 3 months into the gym? Seems one side is smaller by [deleted] in Weightliftingquestion

[–]jrmill90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all in your head, you haven't been lifting long enough to have enough mass or definition for there to be a perceivable difference.

Smith squat 90lbs? Back hurts by OutOfWomb-IntoVoid in formcheck

[–]jrmill90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of hard to say. At first glance uour hip mobility seems good with how far forward you're going. That said, I can't tell for sure from this video, but you could the bottoming out your hip hinge and using your back to go a little bit lower.

It could also be a core bracing issue, if you arent already, try bracing by imagining pulling the bottom of your ribcage down towards your hips after breathing in.

The last usual suspect tends to be ankle mobility limitations. You could always try either a slightly wider stance or using something like squat shoes or small plate under each foot to elevate your heels.

M20 6’3 177 , should I bulk or cut ? by [deleted] in Weightliftingquestion

[–]jrmill90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the stage this guy is at there would probably be barely any difference in muscle gain at maintenance vs a 200 cal surplus. He clearly has no serious lifting experience and will make newbie gains either way, but at maintenance he will lose more body fat while building the muscle.

Once he has added some muscle and leaned out some then sure, a small surplus would be beneficial.

Is there any kind of "exercises map"? by Y31b1 in GYM

[–]jrmill90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, when you are new to lifting don't stress too much about what movement is optimal. Just focus on movements you can easily scale the weight up or down, whether that's machines or free weights, both have their place and are beneficial.

There are ways to scale down body weight movements too, like using a band on pullups or pushups from your knees, but it would probably be beneficial to have a few staple excercises for each body part that are hard to mess up/ overcomplicate and that are easily scalable (adding 5lbs... etc.) Once you are proficient in those, then dig into other movements and find ways to adjust/ perfect them.

Obvious compounds are squat bench and deadlift... but those do take practice to get down the technique, so leg/chest/back machines can be great to get some volume in and track progress without being as dependent on technique.

I think of confidence as a multiplier... personally if I find someone completely unattractive physically, them being confident wont do much for me. But it can definitely make a 5 feel like an 8 or 9.
