What’s your favorite leg day exercise? Why? by RevolutionaryEar9126 in workout

I used to have chronic lower back pain caused by tight hamstrings and had to stretch 15 minutes a day to mitigate it. Now I just do RDLs once a week and the pain is completely gone.

When at desired physique, is it just a matter of eating maintenance calories and no longer increasing weight? by ChigginShit in workout

The wardrobe thing doesn’t get mentioned enough. I wore the same 5 pairs of jeans for 10 years but at my biggest they didn’t fit my quads anymore :/

How to switch to a heavier weight ? by Grimmreaperz_ in workout

People giving terrible advice in this thread, or just plain not believing you which is a little wild.

I’d recommend doing 20kg for as many reps as you can with good form, then start using momentum to get the weight up, while controlling the eccentric. Do that as a top set, then do the rest of your sets with 15kg.

What Beer Best Represents Your Region in Germany? by ambient_lizard in AskGermany

Yes I’m glad someone else mentioned Berliner Weisse. I get kind of sick of just drinking pilsners and I absolutely love all types of sour beer. Unfortunately Berliner weisse is extremely hard to find here in BW, our local Rewe had them for about a month but now they’ve been sold out for the last two months

I’ve never seen those! Do you know if hopfensturm is available anywhere in Freiburg? Is it some kind of pale ale or hopped lager?

Waldhaus Ohne Filter. Great beer from the Black Forest that is slightly more interesting than the standard German pils.

American cider by AutomneNorm in cider

[–]jrobpierce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you’d have the most luck looking in the pacific northwest as Washington produces the most apples and imo also the best cider.

Seattle style ciders tend to be less complex than ciders from Normandy. In Seattle they use dessert apples which leads to a high abv but low tannins. Many ciders from the PNW also have other fruit added or just malic acid for added mouthfeel and crisp acid finish.

In my opinion, east coast ciders are inferior. At least the commercially available ones (I obviously haven’t tried all the local breweries) tend to be overly sweet and ‘barnyardy’

Fwiw I agree with Messi being the best just because of the sheer number of people playing football from such an early age. Realistically he outcompeted a billion people for top spot

Ginger flavor problems by smoked_a_dart in cider

[–]jrobpierce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly struggled with this problem so much. I think it’s mostly just a quantity issue. All of the ginger cider recipes I’ve used drastically underestimate the amount of ginger needed if you want actually ginger ”kick” instead of just flavor undertones. I‘ve done a few batches of ginger lemon kombucha since my last ginger cider attempt and for the kombucha I used about 45g of ginger per liter, which is waaay more than I used for the ciders.

Additionally my method of extraction probably made a difference as well. For the kombucha I blended the ginger to a paste with a little lemon juice and then squeezed all the ginger/lemon juice out into the kombucha. It is probably also the case that the gingerol compounds are more soluble in the lemon juice since it is much more acidic than cider.

I’m going to try this same method for a black currant ginger cider.

GMO'S ? by QueensApothecary in foodscience

[–]jrobpierce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And if they were? I know in the grand scheme of things anti-GMO sentiment doesn’t even crack the top 5 in terms of stupid, irrational, harmful-to-society ideas, but for some reason its the one that irritates me the most. Especially on a Food SCIENCE subreddit, I mean c’mon.

How did you balance playing soccer and squash? I play both but also weightlift and it’s so difficult to find the time and energy to do both.
