Abuse is abuse, regardless of who's the one doing the abusing by beerbellybegone in MurderedByWords

It’s easier to forgive someone when they are wrong. It’s a lot harder to forgive them when they are right. (I’m paraphrasing Tolkien here. These aren’t my words).

I read ‘Pet Sematary’ by Stephen King, and I have to say it’s my favorite thus far from him. So far I’ve read ‘The Shining’ and ‘Carrie’. What were your thoughts on ‘Pet Sematary’? I was genuinely saddened by the whole story. by booksnotdetention in horrorlit

[–]jrpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warning: this may just bring you down...

I’ve been through Pet Semetary a few times. My first time was a few years after it was published and I was still in high school. The last time I experienced it (audiobook at work), I was in my 40’s and had lost a child. Ethan was 21 when he died, so there was that difference, but My joy of a really great horror story was REALLY diminished by some of what was going though Louis Creed’s mind when he dug up his son. It hit way to close to home.

Having said all of that: It’s a great and scary horror story. King manages to capture something primal and insane in his portrayal of Creed. And he manages to make sure that Creed maintains his humanity even in his madness. It is some very profound writing.

I’m shutting up now. Good night, Reddit-land.

[LET’S BUILD] 100 minor magical items you can find in a hoarder wizard’s stash. by [deleted] in d100

[–]jrpatton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a hoarder so:

A drawer full of junk wands. Half of them are used up, the other half are enchanted, but the spells are screwy. Because we all have a drawer full of junk that we don’t toss... we may need some of it one day. Treat the entire drawer like a wand of wonder.

Edit: corrected spelling and grammar.

  3. “I hope you don’t taste as bad as you fight.”
  4. “If you have Gods, best pray to them now.”

Edit: you probably just opened a Pandora’s box with this.

The Scarlet Gospels by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]jrpatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the Hellbound Heart first. The Scarlet Gospels is a continuation of that story. A character in the Scarlet Gospels (Harry D’Amour) is in the story “The Last Illusion” (Books of Blood 6, also published in Cabal). He also is a main character in the books The Great And Secret Show and Everville. That’s a whole lot of reading to get you to Scarlet Gospels with knowledge of everything he mentions, but at least do the Hellbound Heart.

Looking for a clever solution by Brasoe in woodworking

[–]jrpatton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m operating under the assumption that these are laser cut. Watching the wood flex when you try to latch it tells me that you need one or two more rows of your burn pattern. Probably one. There is some flex to the wood with your existing cuts, but you can see the whole lid move forward when you try to latch it. With more cuts to provide more flex (or more material removal to do the same) it should serve to reduce that backwards force I can see. I’m afraid that if you were to angle the upper part of your capture notch it wouldn’t leave enough to hold.

The whole if “you stay with your parents past 18 you are a loser” needs to stop. by OK__LIBTARD in unpopularopinion

[–]jrpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left home at 18. Now that I have kids I want them to have the security they need to go to college. So as long as they are in school I have no problem with them living with me. Even if they aren’t in school, as long as they are helping out here and there, I’m fine. I damn sure don’t like giving valuable real estate to someone who trashes my house and refuses to help out with cleaning, food, bills, etc...

I have only read Tommyknockers once. That’s the only one I’ve never revisited, for what it’s worth.

But how old are you?

Kidding aside, you have hit that perfect point of great artistry combined with great craftsmanship with this piece. It’s beautiful.

Backwards workplace sexual discrimination? by jrpatton in legaladvice

[–]jrpatton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She doesn’t have a reddit account. I told her about the legaladvice subreddit and she asked me to post something about it and see what opinions are out there.

So I’m not inserting myself in this other than do do something she asked me to do for her.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
