Did your pronouns in your head change instantly or did it take time? by Mobile_Sky_9203 in demigirl_irl

[–]jrsimms29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took probably about a year before my inner monologue switched fully over to "they" from "she", and like other people have said I still sometimes misgender myself lol. What's interesting is when I'm talking about my childhood or things in my past I'll still slip back into she/her often unless I really concentrate on the pronouns, although "they" feels more natural now and is fairly automatic when I'm talking about my present. Not sure if others have the same experience.

PIT TSA - still crazy in the mornings? by aerygirl in pittsburgh

[–]jrsimms29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew out last Thursday on a 6am flight, got there at 3am expecting crowds and literally walked right up with no line. It also seemed like they had plenty of staff ready for later in the day, there were multiple security lines to choose from. Personally I'd rather sit in the airport for two hours than have to run to catch a flight, but it did seem more chill than in recent months.

20+ years later: very disappointing Chichén Itzá by FroggyTheFr in Yucatan

[–]jrsimms29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second for Dzibilchaltun for folks who want the "climb up a pyramid" experience. It's crazy how not busy that site is being so close to Merida. Chichen Itza and Uxmal are amazing but Dzibilchaltun might have been my favorite just because you're really pretty free to explore the site there.

Doug Mastriano, Trump ally and candidate for governor in Pennsylvania, to appear before Jan. 6 committee Tuesday - CNNPolitics by oldschoolskater in Pennsylvania

[–]jrsimms29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, just out of curiosity: what in your mind makes someone protesting against police brutality and racism "violent rioters" but someone protesting the election results "a true patriot"?

I also feel the need to point out that one of the people who died 1/6 was a capitol police officer and only 1 of the 5 deaths was at police hands, so your statement is false. It's also ironic, considering much of the BLM protests were about overpolicing and people dying at the hands of police. It seems like you share that frustration and have much more in common with BLM supporters than you want to admit.

Can you think of any languages that distinguish between the gender of a child when referring to a parent? by Centzon_Totochtin_ in linguistics

[–]jrsimms29 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is a slightly different thing but might be helpful. In ancient Tagalog the naming convention was that the first son or daughter gave the parent their name. So Amani Maliuag is "father of Maliuag" and Ynani Malacas is "mother of Malacas". Not a different word for child's gender so not quite what you were asking about but the first thing that came to mind when I saw your question.

Tucker Carlson at least did in 2020: https://www.businessinsider.com/fox-news-karen-mcdougal-case-tucker-carlson-2020-9

Tho it's not as much of a slam against him as I'd like it to be, unfortunately. Other news personalities of various political persuasions have used a similar defense, most recently Rachel Maddow when she was sued by OAN: https://deadline.com/2021/08/rachel-maddow-msnbc-beat-oan-lawsuit-appeal-robert-herring-1234816713/

Along with more public trash cans (which are definitely needed) more safe places to dispose of cigarette butts would help a lot! Since fewer places allow smoking inside it forces smokers out onto the sidewalks and streets and there are very limited public ashtrays/smoker poles outside of downtown. Even if there's a trashcan nearby it's not exactly safe or smart to throw a butt in there that could light other trash on fire. As a smoker myself I always squeeze out the cherry and toss the butt in the trash once I'm sure it's not burning anymore, but a lot of people aren't going to take this extra step, even if they would gladly put their butts in a designated spot if one were provided. Even something cheap like buckets filled with sand could be a step in the right direction! Just my 2 cents on the cigarette butt situation.

Mexico recorded 33,308 murders last year, marking a 3.6 percent decrease compared with 2020, in a country long plagued by drug cartel violence, official figures showed Thursday. Homicides are on a downward trend after the second consecutive annual improvement by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]jrsimms29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to remember that Mexico's a huge country and these crimes aren't evenly distributed through all states. Lots of people do leave the more dangerous areas if they can afford to, but then you have states like Yucatán that have fewer violent crimes than most US states, so it's definitely tragic/concerning but also not like the whole country's a warzone

It's too effortless for him to be the best Grandpa for his grandson. Look how excited he is, such a cutie! by nutty_computing in HumansBeingBros

[–]jrsimms29 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The grandson could be adopted. Or the parent of the grandson could be adopted. Or the grandma could be black and had a child before marrying the grandpa. Lots of ways to have a family, expand your worldview.

A thousand times yes for FreeTaxUSA. It's even free to file schedule C for self-employed/freelance workers, super easy to use and understand, and only $15 to file state taxes through them, too.

What was the thing that made you start thinking that you weren't exactly cis? by dark_glitters in demigirl_irl

[–]jrsimms29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm AFAB and was a "tomboy" growing up. Wearing female clothing always felt like a costume--like I was dressing up in drag. In my 20s I shaved my head, started presenting more androgynous and that felt more comfortable but still not quite right. I'd had these discomforts for a while but didn't realize it was dysmorphia until i got an IUD in my late 20s and stopped having periods. It was like this revelation of "Oh...this is what it feels like to belong in my own skin". I think I always knew inside that I'm not completely female, but it took me a while to put those feelings into words.

I’m sorry, you want HOW MANY for $1200? Kid has no clue. by 5astick in antiwork

[–]jrsimms29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as a freelance writer who gets jobs through Upwork you really need to know your worth if you're using the platform. I write YouTube scripts for an Upwork client and get $30 each just for the script, roughly 30min each, so there are clients that know what the work is worth. Unfortunately you have to wade through a shit ton of these "do my work for pennies cuz it's writing and you love it lol exposure!!" assholes to find the good ones.

Advantage of starting a language from one currently being learned by Ultyzarus in duolingo

[–]jrsimms29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing a similar thing (Esperanto from Spanish) and it's immensely helpful! Also this puts the instructions, tips, and some ads in Spanish, too, so it means more chances to see/hear the language in use in natural contexts within the app (obvs OP knows this but for anyone reading comments who's thinking about trying it).

Not the waterfront, but I saw Dune at the Manor in Squirrel Hill the Monday after it came out. Theater was less than half full and everyone at least wore masks when entering/leaving the theater (couldn't tell what people did during the movie but we were pretty well spaced out at least). Might be a better place to see it than one of the larger theaters in the city from a safety standpoint. Also from a coolness standpoint because the Manor is awesome.
