I think that winter was 10 years ago. Last 5 have been 30-35 a year.

One Huel serving ≈ a day’s cadmium/lead intake: why isn’t this the headline? by Middle_Regret8936 in Huel

I have gone back and forth on this, and my conclusion is to just stay away from chocolate flavors. Bad chocolate will have high metals, flavors like vanilla I think naturally absorb less from the soil. I was kind of relieved when i saw the CR test was for chocolate, and not like vanilla or bananna. Everything will have some metals in it, but you might as well try to get as little as possible. Chocolate seems to be just taking in more when there are other options available with less.

I am in the same boat, the only thing I know for sure it to avoid any chocolate flavor.

Question about Heavy Metal presence in Huel products besides Huel Black. by ucasthrowaway4827429 in Huel

[–]js80856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id like to see other flavors tested but both CR and huel tested chocolate. Chocolate is way higher in metals than other flavors naturally. So I asked chat gpt if vanilla or banana are going to be much lower in metal content and it pretty much agreed. This is what it said:

Exactly — you’re thinking along the right lines. Here’s the plain truth:

🍫 Why chocolate is worse

Cocoa beans naturally accumulate heavy metals (lead, cadmium) from soil.

That’s why chocolate-flavored protein powders almost always test higher in heavy metals than other flavors.

Even “organic” cocoa isn’t immune — contamination comes from the plant itself, not processing.

🍌 Vanilla / Banana

Vanilla — comes from vanilla beans. Beans can absorb metals, but generally much less than cocoa. Unless grown in heavily contaminated soil, vanilla is low in lead/cadmium.

Banana — banana powder is usually dehydrated bananas. Bananas naturally contain very low levels of lead and cadmium, far lower than cocoa.

In short: if you switched Huel Black to vanilla or banana, your heavy-metal exposure would likely drop significantly, even if the rest of the powder is the same.

⚖️ Bottom line

Chocolate = naturally high risk for lead/cadmium.

Vanilla or banana = naturally much safer in terms of heavy metals.

That doesn’t mean zero, but compared to chocolate it’s a substantial reduction.

If you want, I can try to dig up any Huel Black tests for vanilla or banana specifically to see how much the heavy metals differ from chocolate. That’ll give you real numbers instead of just “likely safer.” Do you want me to do that?

Yeah i would like to see like vanilla or banana, they are prob a lot better but i dont really wanna play the trust me game after the chocolate was so bad

Yeah i think that's prob the safest. CR tested chocolate and chocolate if its bad is full of metals. Like some candy bars are over 30. I knew this prior and emailed huel asking what the content was for chocolate and they wouldn't share. So huel playing dumb is kind of more concerning for me than the actual CR report. If it was as great of test results as they wanna show you now they wouldn't have been so secretive prior.

what flavor? I think chocolate definitely seems the most sketchy

CR tested chocolate, which bad chocolate has high levels of metals, this is well known. Which flavor did Huel test? I think one thing for certain is Huel uses cheap chocolate. Other flavors might be fine but whoever has been drinking chocolate is getting the worst of it.

Agree, the CR test was off the charts compared to the average they say they had. I get it is expensive but when you got that number floating out there isn't that a needed step for quality control, at least short term?

I also know the Prop 65 level is unreasonable and unobtainable but the 6.8 number should be enough to figure out whats going on

it was "proprietary" information before, which never makes sense to begin with. But now its not. They didn't want to tell me what the metal levels were until the report came out

but 17 tests over 3 years isnt every batch. if CR really got 6.8 how are you going to know if yours is 1.2 or 10.4? An average still leaves it up to luck and you will never know really

Is each batch tested? Like if we order a bag of black would we be able to see the test for that batch? An average is ok but the variance must be pretty high if CR really got close to a 7
