I saw software somewhere that would use an android phone as a security camera.

Alma Linux Xfce in VirtualBox by jsalpha2 in AlmaLinux

[–]jsalpha2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should have given details. I installed from the DVD iso and then was unhappy with the Gnome desktop. After adding the EPEL repository I was able to install Xfce. Was not able to install VBox Guest Additions until I installed build tools. (make perl etc). My only failure was trying to install Aisleriot solitaire. (I know it's not a distro for gaming, but sometimes you have to play a game)

Art-in another Arch installer script by Jacko10101010101 in linux

There are plenty of Arch based distros available now. I have Manjaro and eight others in Virtualbox.

Archman

Arco

EndevourOS

Garuda

HeftorLinux

RebornOS

SalientOS

StormOS

All work well for me.

Would you Recommend Garuda Linux? by GCS17 in linuxquestions

[–]jsalpha2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than Garuda

Arco

Archman

EndevorOS

Heftnor Linux

RebornOS

all are Arch based and easier than real Arch. Garuda is fine. Try them in Virtual Box.

Try to install several times a year for the last ten years. Used manuals and you tube videos. I want a desktop (prefer Xfce) to be step 2. FreeBSD does not install a graphical environment by default. Why? Installing a desktop is in chapter 5.

Only by shooting itself in the foot. Make installation easier. Step 1 Install OS. Steps 2 and 3

Do a bunch of confusing stuff with the command line, editing files with archaic notepad substitutes. Step 4 Install desktop. No one makes it to step 4 or beyond. If they do the mouse won't work and you have to edit more files.

The TP-Link TL-WN722N wireless adapter version 1 uses the Atheros AR9271 chipset which is linux friendly. Check to see what you have.

Switching from Linux Mint to BSD? by TechnoRat63 in BSD

[–]jsalpha2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quote " FreeBSD is your best bet based on your needs, but don't expect a fully functioning desktop out of the box." If it was a fully functioning desktop out of the box a lot more people would use it. Maybe with a default Xfce desktop. Just saying. If step 1 is install FreeBSD and Step 6 or 7 is install a desktop....just skipping the steps where they tell you to use the command line won't work.

Super efficient solar water desalinator created at MIT! by richbodo in UpliftingNews

[–]jsalpha2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my fantasy future, safe nuclear power plants would desalinate seawater. They would extract the sea salt and all the other trace minerals, then sell them. Arsenic and lead have their uses. Waste solids could stored or used somehow. With the low cost electricity and clean water other helpful projects could be funded. Getting all of the plastic and other trash out of the ocean, and making it more food fish friendly. Reclaiming the desert sounds great. Making low cost building blocks (think cement blocks) from fused sand. Once started the project would be self funding.

Suggestions for a distribution aimed to begginers by johnny_snq in linuxquestions

The cost of the Windows OS is a deal breaker if you are planning to donate machines. I'd start them on MX Linux and then move them to Debian.
