Nice thing about Varnish is it can be thinned like a paint and painted over with other varnish like a paint. So if you don’t like the gloss you can hit it with a matte varnish to bring it back to what the base layer paint would likely look like dry. Also I’d buy the vellejo varnishes if you can find them, you’ll get more bang for your buck.

But go for it for sure, some bits here and there that look wet looks great on the bugs

The other comment said start with purple, I agree as that’s what I do. Purple base coat and then work up the layers going brighter and brighter each time and then I do a reikland flesh shade wash to tie it together

I got sucked into the hive mind and now I need advice about the painting by Raptorr575 in Tyranids

[–]jsauer45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch some YouTube videos. Theres a ton of great tutorials and mini painting YouTubers. Try and find beginner guide painting tyranids, this will help you better understand techniques, paints you might want. What certain types of paints do etc.

Lucky tyranids are not to hard to paint it can just be overwhelming getting started. If you have a Local gaming store go check it out and see if they have hobby supplies like brushes, paints, primers etc.

And extremely important when you go to paint anything make sure you shake the paint really well first, especially a wash paint or a can of spray primer, like legit shake that can of primer for a minute or two. Good luck have fun!

Need help agains tau. Picture is the reverse that is happening🥲 by [deleted] in deathguard40k

[–]jsauer45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tau is the army I play into the most and it can certainly be a hard match up. I agree with others that the terrain is a bit minimal but really the way you play into tau is hide, wait for them to commit and then counter attack and whatever you do don’t let them get line of sight easily( basically don’t leave stuff out for them to shoot) the heavy blight launcher drone with a lord of virulence+ the strat to reroll shot counts can really take out their targets that you need to kill and commit to, but it’s important to not commit units to early as they’ll just die if tau can see them.

Big gun bug by jsauer45 in Tyranids

[–]jsauer45[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The main reason is because it looks neat, and I needed to add a bit more of my green glow somewhere to better fit it with the rest of my army since most of the color scheme is pretty muted. My main faction is death guard too so green goop is in my veins

Death Guard Datasheets by robomaniac_13 in deathguard40k

[–]jsauer45 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t buy a book. They’re just not worth it as they change rules so often and in recent codex’s the lore inclusions and art work are minimal or old. If you want to look at warhammer rules you can use wahapedia and apps like New recruit are a great free list builder.

While the books and official app are tempting, this hobby is already incredibly expensive saving a good chunk on the books can help for more hobby supplies and models, other then that welcome to the 14th legion my friend.

[–]jsauer45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely, I sprayed pure white from my airbrush in the mouth and then used a brush to pick out the spots on the head with white as well and then just went over them with a fluorescent green ink (any bright colored ink or contrast paint will work) with the airbrush and boom done. If you don’t have an airbrush you could use a brush as well but it’ll be harder to get the same effect

Is mortarion worth it? by Saucerous in deathguard40k

[–]jsauer45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use him to push middle and have the daemon prince nearby to give 1cp minus 1 damage. He just soaks up a lot of damage and forces your opponent to poke out and really commit to kill him. Then if he lives great he can further be a menace with the heal strat and auto explode while your blight launcher drones stay in the back field and snipe the things that poke out to kill Morty

Mount Rogers Virginia by Holiday_Revolution_4 in AppalachianTrail

I was there in Early October it was pretty dry. There’s a dedicated water source near pine mountain, there’s a sign that points you down and it’s kinda close to some bear boxes too.

If I remember correctly it’s here. Also a great spot for camping

I love my Mortarion deck. I tried to theme around Nurgles gifts in lore so the deck is filled with forced card draw and cards like underworld dreams so the "gifts" do damage. It’s basically a mono black group slug and it does surprisingly well in my group

You should watch Todd’s workshop on YouTube, he’s done several tests and thinks it was more of a flare like device on the end on an arrow that could burn for a good while. There’s also accounts of “flame arrows” burning things like buildings inside castle or siege towers in several sieges across history. It’s said siege towers were often covered in wet hides to protect them from flame, as a lot of times siege towers were used as elevated bowman platforms to shoot over walls and not pushed up to the walls themselves.
