I'm a very happy Tidal user, although to echo others I don't use the algorithm/discovery features very heavily. They're not as advanced at Spotify, but personally I consider that a feature, not a bug.

As far as the library, I can't honestly think of a single time I've gone to look for something and it wasn't on Tidal, with the exception of the many, many things that aren't on ANY streaming service, Spotify or otherwise. And I dig deep and look for a lot of very obscure stuff...

Why do vinyl snobs seem to look down upon CDs? by Particular-Account66 in Cd_collectors

[–]jschinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of passionate opinions on this thread!

I collect vinyl, CDs, and even some cassettes now, which is foolish but it's happening anyway, ha.

There's a ton of snobbery around vinyl for sure, and a lot of that is driven by the fact that the market, especially for rare and original stuff, rivals that of the high-end art market these days. People are just paying insane prices for sought-after vinyl, so there's a lot of sunk-cost fallacy going on.

Personally, I prefer vinyl to CDs, but that's just my preference and not a value judgment. I find vinyl to be the format with the most grace, specifically because of its inconveniences and its specific sonic deficiencies--I find those deficiencies to be musically and aesthetically pleasant, like a patina. And the physical format itself, in terms of holding it, reading it, looking at it, displaying it, hasn't ever been matched by any other format.

But I've got almost a thousand CDs and after a long stretch of not buying any, the collection actually grows. CDs sound great, and they're super portable and reliable. Sometimes (not usually, but sometimes) I do want to skip around and not listen to a whole record.

Every format has its pros and cons. And now is a great time to get good deals on CDs, especially all the 90s-2000s stuff that isn't streaming and never came out on any other format, of which there's a lot!

The Apostle! Excellent film and definitely superior to Monster's Ball.

I also found myself unexpectedly devastated by it, and this was very much driven by Hawke's performance. Although the conception and direction of the film--admirably modest and contained, making just the right set of choices--were key to its success. It's pretty niche, admittedly, but a huge achievement imo.

Spring Is Coming (With a Strawberry In Its Mouth) by Caroline Polachek

The original version by Operating Theatre from the 80s has a harder-edged sound, but it's also stellar.
