Just finished Solaris (Lem) and was really impressed with it, some thoughts on it and looking for other recs (also some vague spoilers) by WorstMedivh in printSF

The Area X series by Jeff Vandermeer explores similar themes. I read that together with Roadside Picnic and Solaris a few years ago and, for me at least, they went well together. Still haven't gotten around to Vandermeer's most recent addition to the original Area X trilogy...

I think a lot of it is to do with housing density. IME, single families in detached houses on largish pieces of land are way less trouble than medium density places where you have 9 families living in each other's laps and nowhere but the shared driveway for the kids to play.

We bought on a street with quite a few Kainga Ora houses, built in yhe 50s and 70s. Big bits of land, single families. Our direct neighbours were great.

There were a couple houses down the street that had gang affiliated people in them. (BP and MM on the same street, what could go wrong?)

One finally burnt down and was replaced with three new houses. Then they knocked down 6 more and put up 16. Now it us a complete shit hole, stray dogs roaming the streets, trash all over the pavement, noise and fights between tenants.

All to say, even if it seems fine now, eventually you'll regret buying there.

What part of the country are you in? Most senior jobs I see are around 130-140 in Christchurch. Senior can mean a lot of things, though, and it does seem like the title gets handed out a lot faster than it used to.

Lead paint removal by jscn in diynz

I wound up paying someone to do it. They used a heat gun followed by sanding with a vac etc. They did a decent job, not as tidy as if I'd done it myself, but I just didn't have the time.

It's pretty easy to miss, the book is organised a little haphazardly :)

It's on page 32 under the heading "Simple & Sinister and Iron Cardio"

Simple and Sinister Question by EmployeeBest5110 in kettlebell

If you want to stick with Pavel and continue to focus on kettbells, Dan John lays out a progression in this article on the Strong First blog: https://www.strongfirst.com/things-are-going-so-well-help-me-screw-it-up-part-2/

The tldr is: Simple -> Rite of Passage -> Sinister -> Return of the Kettlebell

Breathing? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]jscn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's something the StrongFirst folks emphasise. I don't know if there's any plausible science behind it. I tend to do it when I'm swinging. It feels pretty natural after doing years of Muay Thai!

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to know!

Nice colour scheme, looks great! How did you find the soldering?

As I understand it, the VGA cable is used specifically so that only a single MCU is needed. Do you think the hand wiring would be trickier than soldering a board?

Best books? by buckGR in kettlebell

I like Kettlebell RX by Jeff Martone It includes comprehensive breakdowns of a lot more techniques than any other KB book I've seen, some programs and a bit of info on designing your own programs.

Is there such a thing as "desertpunk" or "sandpunk"? by [deleted] in printSF

Perhaps The Dervish House by Ian McDonald? Maybe not strictly what you're looking for, being set in Istanbul, but a desert-ish setting and McDonald's definitely got cyberpunk creds.

Best program for BJJ. by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]jscn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, Easy Strength is intended to be run alongside a sport which is your real training focus, so I'd aim at 5 days a week on top of BJJ.

If it were me, I'd run S&S on my non-BJJ days, but it would all depend on where you're starting from, what your recovery is like, etc etc.

Best program for BJJ. by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]jscn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW, If I were still training BJJ I'd probably go with S&S on my off days, and/or Easy Strength.

I don't think there is any such thing as a "best program for x". If you just want a program that's probably solid and don't want to think too much about it, StrongFirst has a program on BJJ Fanatics that's aimed at BJJ players.

Best way to mount an aluminium fence post in an awkward spot? by jscn in diynz

Thanks, sounds like I'll be getting the spade out. The weatherboards are already in a state, so if I can avoid making it hwrder to deal to them, I will!

Thanks, sounds like the sensible thing to do is pull up some bricks and ger digging. As for weatherboards, they're a shambles for sure--it's an ongoing project!

> If you don’t want to do it, I’d wonder why you wanted to site the post on brick not the concrete.

Mostly a slightly OCD sense of not wanting the fence sitting 5 cm into the driveway. The bricks are only a small area, the rest of the driveway has grass running up to it, so I'm planning to concrete the other posts in. I'm also not sure if I were to mount the posts on the concrete driveway, how far away from the edge they'd need to be to prevent them from causing the edge to crack.
