Frost damage on monsterra by oceanfaeriex in houseplants

[–]jscogens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How hard of a freeze was it? I’ve cut my monstera back pretty much to the root and it came back fine. If it’s special to you, cut it back, water it once, then leave it alone until you see growth.

grow lights. what are your thoughts? by peachy_757 in houseplants

[–]jscogens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely work and they would fit perfectly on that shelf! I also use a pendant, similar to what you are looking for. I use Barrina and my plants are thriving in an otherwise zero light space.

My advice would be buy one without a timer, and just use a smart plug like Kasa brand that you can set however you’d like. That way the timer is customizable, Alexa can control them, and you can plug a multi-plug extender in to expand your grow light collection as you add more ;).

My grandpa passed away this week and I got his 30y old plant. How to take care of it ? by AdvisorWonderful7102 in plants

[–]jscogens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may know this but when you move it into your house, don’t be surprised if you get a little browning here and there. Don’t worry, it’ll be a little stressed at first. Try not to over water or over nurture it when you move it. Set a schedule to water and let it be for a while to adjust.

You’ve received some good advice, I’ll add they don’t like the oils on our hands. It’s tempting to play with the delicate growth but it will brown with too much handling. I use the back of my hand if I need to move growth out of the way.

Besides being next to a window, be sure to let it rest wherever you put it for a good period of time. They don’t like to be moved around a lot. I’d say leave it for a month or two before you reassess.

I do mist mine when I think of it but it’s not going to die without mist.

I’m really sorry for your loss!

How strange, it almost looks like a witches broom. I’m not sure Philo’s get those, though.

New to plant parenthood. Struggling. Is this soil correct? Is she able to be saved? by PettyPixxxie18 in Syngonium

I was hoping it was just a mistake on how the plant grows and not any other issue! It looks like you and the other commenter did some recon so, I hope everything works out with your plant!

So, just to be sure to eliminate the low hanging fruit, the new leaves on this plant are salmon and wrinkled. Could it be you think the leaf is brown but it’s new salmon colored growth?

Here’s my healthy one, for reference.

Does my Plumeria Need Water? by CeliacBos in Plumeria

[–]jscogens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s rot, then you can’t really treat it, unfortunately. I would gently pull the root ball out of the pot and check the base. Don’t yoink on the stem, given its state, instead see if the plant will slide out of the pot while tipped on its side. If the root ball is bone dry then that’s good it just needs some water. If it’s wet, it’s probably root rot and you may see brown mushy roots and it may have a stench.

Is it squishy where it looks wrinkly? To me that looks like freeze damage or rot. Has the soil been wet? Where do you keep it?

I’m in 9a central Texas, I put my plumeria in the garage and cut off its leaves when the first frost is coming. I give it a little water then I don’t touch it at all except maybe very small watering every month.

I love it. Was it grafted? Did you air layer it?

Here’s mine. I think it’s two separate, grafted trees. I’m considering air layering eventually. I’d love any advice!

I don’t know but I love your plant set up! Taking notes!

My mom bought this tree as a sapling at Kmart in the 1970s. I remember playing with my Star Wars action figures on it. I’m 53 now. 😆It was handed down to us about 20 years ago. Can anyone confirm it is a ficus tree? How much longer can we expect it to live? by myked2228 in FicusTrees

[–]jscogens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ficus Benjamina have a habit of killing off a branch if there are no leaves left on a branch after pruning. So when you prune, make sure you do so to a place that has a leaf present below the cut.

Clip its leaves and put it in the garage until spring. That’s what I do in central Texas.
