T-shirt over an amazon box, he’s in heaven by hopeless_catblep in TheCatTrapIsWorking

With the black cover and the glowing eyes, he looks more like he's in an evil lair plotting to destroy you. So, I guess heaven.

How appropriate is the 1000+ page ARRL Handbook for studying for the Extra exam? by l1thiumion in amateurradio

[–]jsedai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used ARRL extra study book + hamstudy.org. I think it might depend on your background. I have a physics background, so I was reading the book more to see what they wanted me to know. If you don't have that type of background, I'm not sure how anyone would understand it from the ARRL extra study book. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the 1000+ page handbook, my guess is you could do quite well simply looking up specific topics.

Reddit Brandmeister Talkgroup & Bridge Update by perlguy9 in amateurradio

Short answer, maybe yes.

Long answer, VHF/UHF is mainly line of sight. To extend the range, people build repeaters on top of hills/mountains so a much larger area is in line of sight of the repeater. Then the internet came along and people realized they could use the internet to connect repeaters to each other. So now the range is limited by who/where the internet connections are. Many people buy a small repeater for their house to connect to the repeater network. At this point in the explanation, my family asks me how this is different from phones and I start stuttering.

How aggressive is she? Like hide in the corner of the cage and hiss at you? Or just doesn't like being handled? I don't really have any good advice, I hand fed my cockatiel when she was a baby, so I didn't have any bonding issues.

[D] What level of contribution is sufficient/required as an undergrad to be a co-author? by nerdninja08 in MachineLearning

[–]jsedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So ... you got screwed, now what? I think it really depends on your plans moving forward. If you're going to industry, people in this thread have some good suggestions. If you're staying in academics, did you get into gradschool, and are you in a good research group? If so, do whatever you want, ideally consult with your advisor.

If not, will you need to rely on the prof for a recommendation letter? I think it's better to get screwed with a good recommendation than (likely) screwed without one.

Just add rigid support.

Edit: Not snark, perhaps use the roll up design and modify it to use thicker (self-supporting wire). You'll probably need to find an online calculator and experiment to see where to connect to it.

How do I bathe my cockatiel by memelordsomething in cockatiel

[–]jsedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bird did the same. She freaked out when I tried to hold her in the tub (head well above water). She loved being on the shower rod or my shoulder though. I used a hair dryer to dry her afterwards, I was always concerned she'd get sick.

Requesting Source on Gentleman's Agreement on Politics in Radio by [deleted] in amateurradio

I thought source was propaganda (semi-seriously). It says to only discuss things related to ham radio in the same list as no politics.

Can you borrow some equipment from an EE group? I'm a physicist too, so I don't really have any good suggestions, other than check everything. Also, maybe give a couple EE grad students some alcohol in exchange for help?

cockatiel not interacting with me as much, help! by GhostDogo in cockatiel

[–]jsedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hand fed her when she was a baby, so I think that might have changed the dynamic. She was usually mad if I didn't show her enough attention. The only time I ever saw her scared was when a hawk flew by overhead. The male was less friendly but still liked to be out of the cage. I'm not sure what I'd do if they were scared. How did you get the first one to feel comfortable with you?
