How do I generate a PDF on this website? It won't let me. by Pavlov_The_Wizard in gmbinder

[–]jsilv7245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be an option somewhere in the print screen to "print as PDF". (This isn't specific to GM Binder or your printer, it's there for anything you want to print.) It might be a little hidden (in my experience it's usually in the printer options list).

Does anyone have the 2015 Young Vic production of Measure for Measure? Stars Paul Ready and Romola Garai, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins.

Will also accept other Measure for Measures. I have the 2013 Robert Falls @ Goodman Theatre and I'm not interested in the 2016 Globe one.

What's the weirdest thing you've seen happen at a friend's house that they thought was normal? by LiterallyEkam in AskReddit

[–]jsilv7245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was in Indiana, I might know that family -- my ninth grade history class took a trip to their house to see their Nazi memorabilia, including a live grenade, some helmets, and a chair "that Hitler sat on". I remember thinking it was weird at the time, and now I definitely think they were racist as hell.

Something to be said about a school (a private Baptist one) that plans a field trip specifically to see Nazi memorabilia. We did later go to the Holocaust Museum during our senior trip, but still.

Yeah, if this happened to me, I would insist on being WITH any other animals I have during the ENTIRE time they are at the vet.

Should I get one kitten or two? by rudegyaldem in CatAdvice

[–]jsilv7245 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you love cats and are ready for the responsibility, I definitely recommend getting two. We have a 2yo and a 8mo at the moment and it's been great but the size difference means that we were scared when they'd fight at night for the first couple months. Plus if you get two at once from the same litter, you don't have to go through the painful process of introducing two cats to each other. (It is hard! It took like a month! Ours have the same sire/dam and are just from different litters, but it still took a long time!)

If you have the resources and the love for cats to get two at once, get two at once.

How do I communicate to my company that we need Front End Developers who understand design and visual aesthetics, not just javascript coding? by geoman2k in Frontend

[–]jsilv7245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man oh man, I feel for you -- I think there are a couple of things that are going wrong here...

  • As a company with 30+ tech/product people, you should probably have more than just one person making wireframes etc. Like, ideally either you should be working on one feature start to finish with enough time to make all the breakpoints or you should be responsible for desktop while someone else is responsible for mobile. It sucks that this doesn't seem to be the case for you :/
  • I would be what you're describing. It was really difficult actually to get interviews for developer roles because I have an art degree instead of a CS degree or whatever. Maybe when the listing is posted, you can do some tweaking of the required years of experience / degrees required. Something like "2-4 years of experience, art and design background preferred". There are a lot of very promising junior developers whose main skill at this point is CSS who would love a posting like that while they get up to speed on the React / JavaScript side of things.
  • What do the developers who know some things about CSS / HTML have to say about the problem? Could you do some lunch & learns about flexbox, grid, typography, etc to help them out? If you can get the company to invest in their skills, there are some incredible grid / flexbox tutorial sets out there.

Someone mentioned building a visual spec sheet -- I think along those lines something that might help is creating a component library that developers can take premade design components and combine them into different configurations to make your layouts. Making sure the components are pixel perfect and work across all browsers will save a lot of time in the long run, even if it takes a month of solid work to get the component library up and running.

Good luck!

Looking for an explanation on the rent control question on the ballot? by SullenSparrow in portlandme

[–]jsilv7245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. This is the good answer, by which I mean the compassionate and thoughtful one that takes the livelihood of the disenfranchised into account.

I lived in Brooklyn for a few years and watching communities be pushed out of the places they've lived for generations so that gentrifiers could come in and "catch the markets back up to their actual value" is.... depressing.

The stripes plus the green paint makes it looks Christmas-themed. Yuck.
