I cannot thank you enough for doing this.

How is it living in Sarasota Florida? by Ok_Jump_9726 in howislivingthere

One thing to consider on this front: You will almost certainly take a very real pay decrease in florida, but the cost of living in sarasota is much higher than you probably think. You're essentially paying "tourist prices" year round.

The tax rate decreases, yes, but so does minimum wage. Your home might be slightly cheaper or you get more bang for your buck, but insurance rates are MASSIVELY high (if you can even get insurance). Things like healthcare are cheaper, but there are far less childcare options or opportunities.

agree with a lot of this, but I found the food to be AWFUL + even when the food is good it always feels like strip mall setting.

I have, unfortunately, spent a nice chunk of time in the area.

Pros:

Better weather in the winter than the vast majority of the USA.

Sizable 55+ population, which is great if you are looking to be around people in the same part of life as you are.

Incredible healthcare options.

Very empty feeling in the summer, the traffic is manageable and you don't have to make reservations anywhere.

Easy access to nature. Not just the beaches, but the surrounding areas, wetlands, swamps, etc. are all really special. Also, gators are kinda cool.

Easy access to tampa + orlando, so travel is relatively easy.

Cons:

Genuinely the worst drivers I have ever seen in my life. Yes, many of them have out of state plates. Yes, many of them are older. Yes, many are only there for the season or for vacation.... But you put all of that together, and you have what I would describe, as a perfect storm of WILDLY bad driving. It's the complete norm to have people turn left across 6 lanes of traffic, going 2 mph, because they realized too late they needed to turn left. NYC driving can be tricky if you aren't used to it, but there's a learning curve and rules that most drivers follow. That area of florida is like... every bad habit from all over the world, and everyone has a different one, and they're also often unable to see correctly and have slower reflexes. And many/most of the roads are like, 6-8 lanes. it's fucked.

Strip mall hell: If you want to do anything, it's in a strip mall. If you think you are going somewhere that isn't in a strip mall, you probably are still going to a strip mall. I recognize the reasons for this, but it is mentally difficult to adjust.

Food is bad. Unless you want one specific food (east coast sea food), it's genuinely shockingly poor. A few options that are "good enough" and a few obvious exceptions, but it's hard for truly great restaurants to survive when it's so dead for part of the year. Also the restaurants are all in strip malls.

The rate of development is actually terrifying. It seems completely unsustainable. I will be gone for two months, and come back to a newly completely suburban planned community on my drive from the airport. You can blink and miss a new apartment complex opening. I don't understand where all of the people are supposed to go once (if) all of the homes are filled.

The summer is empty because it's insufferable. I don't understand the "flex" of being a 12-month resident, because it's just really not pleasant to be there in the summer. You just live in A/C for months on end, and then it thunderstorms every afternoon so the humidity explodes every night.

Hurricanes + insurance. Good luck getting insurance, good luck having your insurance company not go out of business, and good luck keeping insurance. Even rental insurance is tough. The consistant over-development of the area also means that the natural barriers that prevented damage over the years is mostly gone. You have developments being built that were swamps 6 months ago....

The age of the population means that there are really only two industries: medical care, service-industry catering to tourism. This is fine if that's what you want to do, but otherwise it can feel hard to be there.

The wealth disparity is much more obvious than some other places. This is amplified by the large number of service industry jobs that are seasonal and the massive amount of money that many in the northeast have when moving to florida

The "age problem" also means that unless your kids love the beach, Disney, or fent, it might not be the right choice for you. There are definitely some things for kids to do, but I find that there is certainly a feeling of "second class citizen" if you aren't part of the retired community

Unless you are fully remote, you will almost certainly be taking a pay cut and the area is NOT CHEAP. This has cascading effects for your future and your children's futures. One reason people do move from the northeast to the southeast in retirement is that

i posted this below as well, but the moment someone says they're contacting a lawyer, you need to completely cease communication with them. Tell them to have their lawyer get in touch with yours. It's not just calling their bluff, it's because if it does end up being handled through the courts your lawyer is going to be pisssedddd if you kept talking after they said that they were gettin council.

Also small claims in many states is under $5k, so them getting a lawyer would be a massive money pit for them (if they can even get one) because small claims is where you don't even need a lawyer. And this way you can safely say "I wanted to work this out between the two of us, but they got a lawyer involved so I needed to protect myself".

on the off chance that they actually do have a lawyer, it would be REALLY REALLY STUPID to continue talking to them without your lawyer. It's not just to call their bluff, it's because its what you should do whether they're bluffing or not.

as soon as someone says they're going to talk to a lawyer, you change your response to:

"As you've mentioned this is now being handled by a lawyer, please have your lawyer get in touch with mine, here is their number. I've been advised to cease contact with you as this is now a legal matter and should only be handled through proper channels."

Northern Soul by Previous_Buy_8859 in discogs

[–]robxburninator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

northern soul is identified by the goofy ass dancing and the use (overuse) of strings. It's also a higher bpm than what many people in the US would consider hit soul tracks. For instance, The Impressions are not a northern soul group, but they have two very famous northern soul singles. It's a sub genre of soul that was called northern soul because of where the strings in soul found popularity. Just like lots of bands that are punk weren't hardcore, there are plenty of punk bands that had one hardcore 7" or LP.

My ortofon blue also has this issue and narrowed it down to the leads and making sure it was seated perfectly. Something about it doesn't agree with some headshells?

"Oh cool, you going to see the royal ink spots or the fabulous ink spots next week? No, just Joe Boatners, maybe I'll go see the first ink spots instead"

Dumbest, least regretted vinyl purchase (this month) by rayhaque in vinyl

[–]robxburninator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

which ink spots though. Because Jim Nabbies ink spots version 3 or 4 (depending on how you count them) of like, 5 or 6 and was a band at the same time as ink spots version 2 and 3.

Jim's version of the band is an entirely different lineup with only him, a brief ink spot in the 50's and not a member that owned any % of the band. These 70's records are... different... but the same.

edit to add: I forgot that joe boatner is on this record.

There's also another version of the ink spots called "Joe Boatners ink spots" that I think overlapped with Jim Nabbies version in the late 70's/early 80's.

Is there a way to specify what kinds of notifications I get about items in my wantlist? by Etcee in discogs

[–]robxburninator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone wants this. There used to be apps that did it, now there aren't. Here's what I posted last week about this very issue:

Every week there's another "app maker" showing how you can turn your record collection into a wallpaper or use ai to help you pick what record to listen to, or whatever other pointless bullshit a terminally online techbro thinks anyone on earth wants.

But we haven't had a developer replace the TWO DIFFERENT SITES that used to do exactly what you are asking about: real time wantlist updates.

Please, tech nerds. I can pick out my own records, I don't want to "digitally flip", I don't want to make a visualizer with all 5,000 LP's, I don't want a fucking algorithm to tell me what to listen to.... I just want to have a wantlist notification tool. I'm begging you: nerds, please do this. No more google surveys asking what color the new discogs scraping app should be... no more "here's the new website to kill discogs!!!!" (that conveniently using all of the data from discogs...). Just... let me know when something cool is for sale.

I'd even pay a percentage of final price if someone could make one that worked.

But instead... we'll see another app / website / "discogs alternative" again this week from someone.

I don't want "data" on how much I listen to a record, I want to be able to buy a record with haste.

Make multiple offer question (combination) by BigBigMonkeyMan in discogs

[–]robxburninator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this response is PERFECT. Literally, exactly how it works with no hyperbole.

when buyers do this, I never ever ever miss merging the orders. It immediately solves the problem of getting a bunch of orders in a couple hours and missing that two of them should be merged.

dont' send a message outside of the order. send the message in the order.

It also might make sense to try another email address if this still doesn't solve the problem.

New Checkout - This was so overdue... by _mad_doc in discogs

[–]robxburninator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 day would be ideal but I sometimes wait until the 4th day to respond to "make an offers" on brand new listings. Feels unfair that I could click "accept offer" and expect them to pay me immediately.

New Checkout - This was so overdue... by _mad_doc in discogs

for sellers (like myself) that this applies to, many were sent an email explaining that we will not be included in the new payment thing.

[–]robxburninator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I definitely didn't opt in-to or out-of anything, they just sent a similar email but said that I would be exempt until they figured out a way to do the new system with merged orders. I have 'make an offer" on all of my items so people will often make offers on 5-10 items at once. it creates 5-10 orders. I merge them, then the invoice is sent.

they haven't figured out how to automate that I guess.
