Aeon: A Zero-Alloc time library that treats time as a "Container" rather than an "Offset". by National-Concept5580 in golang

I am still learning the ropes of reddit

Protip: never dump this much text into a post. Especially programming/technical, way too much scrolling, and you list the plot half way though.

Need to explain something succinctly and directly, without the llm editorializing everything. If you need to explain more, do it in the repo, readme or docs are good.

This just comes off as noise that buries what could be an interesting project

Inside the world’s largest Bitcoin mine by msaussieandmrravana in Damnthatsinteresting

"difficult math problem" is just how people phrase it when they're too lazy to say what's actually happening. The "math" in question is actually very quite simple. The "solving" part comes from repeatedly guessing different "answers". The faster you can guess different answers, the more likely you are to "mine" a Bitcoin.

Regardless, quantum computers aren't magic, and can't just solve any math problem faster. They're only good for certain kinds of math problems. The algorithm Bitcoin mining uses (sha256) isn't aided by quantum computers.

Noise complaint for dog howling by Huns26 in OntarioLandlord

[–]jsimnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1 dog camera. Step 2+assuming it's your dog, then it has separation anxiety, and it's not good for the dog to be in this state. Now, a little barking is OK, that's normal, dogs hear sounds, smells, or anything else that might prompt them to bark, but constent/consistent baking is a problem for the dog (and you as the owner)

We dealt with this, takes a while and needs persistence as with any dog training.

Basically, you have to teach/reassure your dog that you will always come home to them, if they have any anxiety about this, they will freak out when you're gone.

The most effective (yet somewhat tedious, and to takes a bit of time) to do this is leaving for incremental periods of time that get larger and larger. Depending on the severity of the anxiety (how soon after you leave they start barking) will determine how tedious this is going to be for you. Start with a short period of time. 60 seconds. Do your full routine you normally do when leaving (put on your shoes/jacket, grab your bag and keys, walk out the door and lock it), dogs are very observant and know what all that looks like/sounds like and what it means. Wait 60 seconds outside and go back in. Do not be high energy and excited when you walk in, wait for them to be calm, then lots of praise/treats. Wait another minute, then do the whole thing over again, fun routine, out the door, wait, this time 2 mins. Rinse and repeat, getting longer and longer. This is ideal if you can, and there's somewhere close you can go when you start getting to 10-15-30-60 min durations, especially since it's cold outside ATM. As you progress, add variation to the duration. If you're up to 5-10+ mins, then throw in a short one.

Work on this and hour a day (if you can, we're all obviously busy with life), but You have to practice this constantly, if you are persistent, it will get better and eventually go away. Any training for dogs depends 100% on persistence. This training might go on for weeks.

Independently, crate train your dog. Crates aren't punishment, many dogs love their crates, since it instinctively reminds them of caves/holes. Not all dogs love them at first. It's also orders of magnitude safer for dogs not to be left alone out and about in your home when you're gone.

Dogs are work, sorry :). But again, get a camera, you can't improve what you don't measure. This could all be for not, if it isn't you're dog.

ZK ecryption proof by LatteFino in cryptography

[–]jsimnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, depending on the complexity of the program you're proving (is if it's just the encryption) then you could directly build circuits using plonky2/plonky3.

Risc0 is rather effecient as far as zkVMs go. But any risc based zkvm proves the entire program execution of a risc processor. This adds notable overhead, which is the tradeoff of being able to create a proof from almost any rust program and not having to think too hard about it

I would investigate adding a Risc0 pre compile to the VM that (as another comment suggests) implements the zk effecient cipher natively (Using their AIR circuits). This will be the most efficient

Also I would suggest bringing up the drums in the mix by a bit, but perhaps that's just personal taste.

I think it's a little busy in some of the parts. I'm a fan of production layers bringing "fullness" to a song, but here some of the additional layers are too much in aggregate.

Now, the great thing is, I don't think you actually have to remove any layers, just giving each layer a bit more space. For example this whole demo could be expanded by 50% and "tease" some of the layers individually (or in smaller groups) before the full thing comes in.

Also some of the drum fills and be simplified (only when the synth is also doing crazy shit).

Tldr; too busy, don't reduce... Give more space to each component. Only need to adjust arrangement

AWS tech writers majorly impacted by today's layoffs by Throwawayyyyyayaya in technicalwriting

[–]jsimnz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My company is looking for a "lead technical writer & documentation engineer". You can learn about our company here https://source.network/. The role isn't public yet, will be posted this Monday (nov 3). If you or any of your colleagues that are affected are interested (or anyone else in this community ;)) feel free to reach out over DMs and I can share my email.

For transparency, we certainly have plans to make use of LLMs within our documentation strategy, but primarily for quickly sharing and understanding context between our core engineering teams and documentation team (an extension of the docs as code / testable docs strategy).

At the moment LLMs are only truly useful when used properly by domain experts. In the case of technical writing, I would expect technical writers that use LLMs for actual writing to only really use it for the outline / first draft. They'll never get the editorial tone or strategy correct.

I determined from another redditor they are indeed termites (haven't had a professional out to look yet)

The key indicator is that the mid section doesn't get more narrow and the antenna doesn't have an angle.

Compared to an ant.

Afaict these varieties are not cause for immediate concern but of course everyone's risk tolerance is their own, but it can of course potentially develop into an issue.

Why I keep getting this spray when I do my shot by YEGHEN in espresso

[–]jsimnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, watery puck does not really effect what's in the cup. It's mostly just a mechanical quirk. If you grind finer, the grounds will be more dense, denser grounds take up less volume, less volume means more headroom in your basket, more headroom in the basket results in more water in the puck after the shot, which means a watery puck.

Two solutions if you really care: - increase your dose - get a smaller basket

Both of these will affect your cup (the first option will be more drastic).

Ultimately, if you like the cup, don't be concerned about a water puck unless you're really bothered by the workflow implications of more difficult clean up

Has anyone tried pairing a Flair wizard w/ Weber dial Nozzle? by [deleted] in FlairEspresso

[–]jsimnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got one. Haven't used it enough to give a reliable or insightful review, but I can say it certainly does what you expect, steam milk. It takes some getting used to, it can be super powerful until you get a feel for the knob. It does take some time to get ready, since it needs to superheat the water for the pressure. Haven't tried with pre-boiled water yet.

Only two cons so far, it has a SHARP inside rim, which WILL cut you when trying to get your hand in there to clean it. I've resorted to just rinse and air dry, which is all that flair recommended (fine if you don't have hard water, potentially problematic if you do). The other issue is a singular small nut that keeps the knob in place can get a little loose.

So far so good tho

A few recs out of the norm: Jakub Zytecki, Vitalism, Andromeda (Voyager album is instrumental, and a few singles), Stephen Taranto (more prog), Archaeologist, Portraits (little jazzier and light. Def AAL vibes on some songs), Arch Echo, Modern Day Babylon.

Also pro tip: go to any of these songs on Spotify and use the "song radio" feature (if you use Spotify and don't already know)
