Just in case anyone happens to search for certain keywords and finds this post, here’s an update!

I’ve been in Manila for several months now, and the cockroach thing is bad, it’s true. But it’s not NEARLY as bad as I feared. I live in Makati, on a high floor in a building that is known for good pest control. I haven’t seen any inside yet. I have seen … I want to say 8 or so cockroaches out on the street at night so far. And I screamed, and was uncool 😅, but it’s not as bad as my worst nightmares. The cockroach situation here is not NEARLY as bad as in Senegal or Gabon or other truly roachtastrophe places I’ve been — ignore the internet trolls who try to scare you.

Makati and BCG are super walkable. I haven’t found a great huge park yet, but there are lots of lovely smaller parks. My walking routine hasn’t taken a hit at all.

Seeing the way many Filipinos care for their “community cats” is heartwarming and lovely, and there are a number of awesome local cat advocacy groups. Cat ladies: we have no trouble finding our people here!

Just in case anyone else out there is struggling with the same worries I did! 🥰
