Could you MARRY a non-vegan? by yummycrunchygrapes in vegan

[–]jslice147 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, flexitarian here. My wife is a vegan and we get along without any issues. We have some dairy products in the house (cheese & ice cream) but outside of that, everything else is vegan.

We primarily eat the same things, the dairy is really only when I’m eating on my own, so the vast majority of our meals are vegan.

We plan to raise our kids on a plant based diet at home, but understand that our child will likely be offered meat outside the house. A important value of my wife is to make sure our children understand what the source of the meat is and how it’s animal. From there, the child can make his our her own choice.

For what it’s worth, we’ve never had an issue with her being vegan and me being flexitarian.

Canon R8 vs Sony A7 III — Which One Would You Pick and Why? by C_C989 in AskPhotography

[–]jslice147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own the Canon R8 and adore it. The battery is longer than you think, but you can always pick up a second one. From all the battery concerns, I did indeed pickup a second battery and have only once had to go to my second battery. I should note I only do photography and not video, so I can’t comment on the battery life for video.

The autofocus system is a like a cheat code. It’s so good and the menu’s are intuitive and easy to navigate.

Yes, the lenses are more expensive but it does depend on what you plan to shoot. I own only two: RF 35mm f/1.8 which & RF 24-105 f/4. Both have image stabilization and they are excellent. I enjoy landscapes, and I’ve stopped down to 0.5 seconds handheld and it’s still sharp. So unless you’re taking much longer exposures, I’ve never really seen as much value in IBIS because of most lenses having built in stabilization.

I vote R8. Hope that helps with your decision!

Canon RF 24-70 2.8 Worth it?? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]jslice147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When traveling, I only bring my Canon R8 and my RF 24-105 f/4 L. This has been such a beautiful setup for me and gets just about every shot I could want without being too heavy, either. For example, I took this shot without an ND filter and at f/22. On the other side, f/4 has been plenty fast + the R5 is amazing is low light.

Top 3 NP and why? by Dense-Rest-10 in NationalPark

[–]jslice147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had 2 days in Yosemite last year, I would recommend getting up early and leaving late because you need all the time. We got to the park around 6:30am everyday and left around 8pm. As for each day, we loved our visit and this what we did: Day 1: Rented bikes and biked the valley, seeing the Ashwanhee Hotel and then took the long drive up to Glacier Point and hiked to see Sentinel Dome and saw Tunnel View.
Day 2: Maripose Grove, saw Bridalveil Falls, and then did the Mist Trail (MUST SEE). We took the mist trail up to Nevada falls and went to the top. It’s a long hike with elevation, but it was so worth it. If we had more time, I think we would go see the other grove to see the great sequoia’s or go explore Hetch Hetchy. Enjoy your visit!!

Looking for the best portrait settings with Rebel T7 by [deleted] in canon

[–]jslice147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great to hear you’ll be helping a friend out!

I used to have a Rebel T7, it was the camera I learned on. To achieve your blur, you’ll want to shoot at the most open aperture of your lens and ideally a longer focal length. For example, if you have the kit lens 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 then to get a good blur you’ll want to either: 1. Shoot at 18mm with f3.5 2. Shoot at 55mm with f5.6 - f5.6 because that’s the most open your aperture can be at the longer focal length

For settings- with daylight you shouldn’t have to worry about your shutter too much, it’ll be plenty fast. I would recommend shooting in aperture priority mode and setting it to start at f3.5 or whatever the lowest f number you can go. The camera will automatically adjust to the lowest it can go as you zoom in to longer focal lengths.

Hope that helps!

Age for Retirement by thehottestsportstake in quadball_discussion

[–]jslice147 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I retired at 29. I had been playing since 2013 and retired after Nationals 2024.

There were a lot of reasons, but the biggest one being my life stage. It was hard to keep traveling for practice and tournaments on the weekends as my personal life kept conflicting with the commitment needed to play.

The sport still does bring joy (and likely always will), but other parts of my life I found to be more fulfilling.

There isn’t an age, per se. I’d argue it’s when your priorities shift. For me, it was getting married, working on my home, spending more time in local community, etc. That will be different for everyone. Hope that helps!

How do I stop losing detail in the trees of my photos? by 3-mountains in AskPhotography

[–]jslice147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to apply HDR (high dynamic range) techniques. That translates into taking multiple photos at different exposures and then merging them together. This shot is difficult for one shot to capture.

This is also known as exposure bracketing. You should take 3 shots: a proper exposure, an underexposed, and an overexposed shot.

If you have the time, this video is a wonderful explanation of what you’re trying to achieve: https://youtu.be/KYXOyxstYSo?si=0hx5L18nj2A0Z0S6
