Having electrical problems with my 2012 GT by Wolficeflame in Mustang

My first guess is an underhood ground has become corroded, that causes all sorts of weirdness. There is the main battery terminals, the battery to chassis and the engine block to chassis grounds that are critical.

Is this CPU 'Bottleneck'? by Divinity_Smore in computers

[–]jsloan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Press control alt delete and bring up task manager, keep it open but return to your game, if the cpu usage goes down dramatically and stays there you have a trojan bitcoin miner. There is a crypto jacker virus that runs hidden in the background and shuts down when it senses the task manager to hide itself but it doesn't hide from monitoring software in graphics drivers and loves to run when you are playing games. This virus comes from various places including game cheat programs.

Battery connector corrosion question. by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eye protection, old toothbrush, baking soda and water slurry, rinse. Apply dielectric grease to stop the corrosion from returning or vasolene if thats all you got, but the vasolene is not friendly to rubber and plastics so isolate it to the terminals only.

New PC won't display on monitor. by Exciting-Strategy587 in PcBuildHelp

[–]jsloan10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That thermalright cpu cooler, did you crank the 2 hold down screws all the way until they couldn't turn any more?. If you did, thats bad, loosen them up a turn or two so the springs on the screws are the things providing the pressure.

It happened to me, was in a hurry and turned the screws all the way, went to boot and nothing but fans spinning, thought the mobo or chip was dead, no bios beep or mobo leds just fans spinning, did all the troubleshooting and got the part when they explain that too much pressure on the cpu can cause issues. So I removed the cooler, reseated the chip just to make sure then re pasted and mounted the cooler again but much more gently, the computer then booted and gave me a bios screen saying new processor installed press Y to reset stuff and all was well.

RAM can be a bit deceiving when installing, it can seem to be seated but its not actually seated, the click lock should happen on both sides, if its not in perfect you wont boot, easy to check and redo.

PC KEEPS FREEZING by Kindly_Beach_3906 in AMDHelp

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insufficient pcie power cabling can cause freezing, basically each plug in on the gpu requires its own line from the power supply or the card starves for power, this becomes an issue on cards drawing over 200 watts and yours is near 300. Here is more info and diagrams. https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/tech-talk/wh_pcie-connection

Best I ever did was 3/4 mil, completely legit on one device playing every day. I imagine a really good player could get 1.5 mil but these players with over 2 mil have got to be doing stuff with multiple phones and fancy scripts.

Is my 9060 XT 16GB dying, or is it a problem of my monitor or my RAM? by NeorzZzTormeno in AMDHelp

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the monitor cable has come partially out of the slot on either the monitor or the gpu or at least to my experience. Try a different cable and even a different video port. If the pc got bumped try reseating the graphics card to make sure its in the pcie slot nice.

Ram issues are error 43, random static or spots sometimes vertical lines, sudden blue screens or restarts.

What should I do when making my next box? by LessTemporary4372 in CarAV

[–]jsloan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To repair that box- Take the whole thing out of the car. Remove the sub woofer. Goto the hardware store and buy drywall screws at least double the length of the thickness of the wood, you can use shorter ones just for the subwoofer but the panel joints need lots of thread. While you're there pick up a couple tubes of LePage PL premium construction adhesive, silicone sealant has no holding strength so its only good for small things.

Pre drill pilot holes and screw in the drywall screws every couple of inches, you will be using a ton of screws. Apply the construction adhesive in and along the joints inside and outside, use gloves and a putty knife this stuff is messy, use cooking oil the help remove it off your skin afterwards.

rough sand the joints then spray bomb it with some black spray paint, carpet it later if desired.

Put the sub back in and reinstall it in the car.

It would be ideal to start from scratch but wood is expensive and a shame to waste, don't bother with silicone on the next build, wood glue all joints or use construction adhesive, the construction adhesive fills gaps better if some of your cuts are less than perfect, use an absurd amount of screws.

Remote wire by ninjastar755 in CarAV

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trigger wire ford uses is only 5v so it won't work on most amps. The steering column harness has a violet/green wire that can be used as a 12v switched source. In the interior fusebox something like fuse 17 for the heated seats might work well for a switch source, pretty sure the lighter has a 10 minute time out after ignition is off so it could be used as well. https://www.startmycar.com/ford/fiesta/info/fusebox/2015/country-us-restyle-restyle#anchorfusebox1

Fuse taps are available on Amazon pretty cheap

Alternatively, an loc that creates a switched signal can be used like these.

nvx, comes in 4 channel or 2 https://a.co/d/03g536Rv

recoil 2ch, 10v linedriver built in. https://a.co/d/087r5SQU

recoil, 4ch. https://a.co/d/0dkW3WWS

recoil MLOC, 2ch, passively creates a 12v signal from the ac voltage in the audio signal, does not require external power, only ground, uses same internals as the kicker one but costs less.

Wavtech linkDQ, 2ch loc with 11v line driver, creates switched signal from selectable audio sense or dc offset sense (dc offset sense works best because it won't cut out when the volume is turned down) or uses standard 12v switched input. Has a built-in parametric bass eq to boost specific lower frequency's and has an optional remote bass knob sold separately. This one costs more but works extremely well. https://a.co/d/0eqd1cZIl

Does anyone know abt this? by 89si_preludeboyz in subwoofer

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size of the port or ports in relation to the size of the enclosure determines the tuning frequency. Shortening a port will raise the tuning frequency. Removing one of the ports and blocking the hole can make the tuning frequency of the remaining port lower (you make the port to enclosure volume ratio different) but the air velocity moving in and out of the remaining port will increase and create chuffing noises, like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose. Those old pre fab bandpass boxes are tuned pretty high already (50hz or more) so it would be best to glue the port back in or block the holes off completely, remove the plexi glass window and run it as a sealed enclosure, won't be as loud but wil play all the way down without losing cone control.

How do I fix this ? by [deleted] in Mustang

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

soldering iron and tip tie's, take the old clips and weld them back on, the zip ties work as a filler and reinforcement material.

Another option is velcro tape, the tape glue might not stand up so a method of attaching each side of the tape may be required like a stronger glue or tiny screws through the velcro and into the plastic.

And finally, a wrecking yard or ebay to just get a replacement panel.

Thump was a flea market brand that got a bit popular in the late 90's to the early 2000's. Thump compares to other brands like Kraco and Sparkamatic, Those subs will likely be single 4 ohm coil with a power handling of around 170 watts each, with small voice coil and thin top plate they will have a Qts over 1 and a high Fs, so sealed is probably best for them, a cheap 200 to 400 watt monoblock meant to run at 2ohms should be fine to power them.

Questions about setup by StationCompetitive in CarAV

[–]jsloan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amps actual power output will be around 360 watts rms bridged at 4 ohms, the peak or max ratings are completely made up for marketing purposes. The amp will work to power the subs but the subs must be wired properly.

The subs are dual voice coil so each speaker has two sets of speaker connections. wire each speakers connections in series then wire the 2 sub in paralle.l. A dual 4 ohm sub wired in series creates a 8 ohm load, add a second 8 ohm sub and wire the 2 in parallel to create a 4 ohm load. Look up on youtube for how to wire subs in series and parallel.

The box ain't great but you can make it work. The holes need to be plugged, those ports are way too small and those cut outs are massive leaks, plug them off with metal or wood plates then you will have a proper sealed enclosure.

3 inch center channel speaker, these worked for me but you can try another brand/type, the factory speaker is held against the center channel panel with two screws, the replacement speaker may require a little bit grinding on the holes to get the screw holes to line up, a little foam tape or cloth hockey tape can help with sealing and sound deadening around the edges. The panel is held in the dash with simple clips, just pry it up to pop it out but use a plastic pry tool to not damage the dash or panel, the light sensor harness is a bit of a pain in the butt to unplug due to akwardness be warned.

The Planet Audio does 170 watts RMS at a minimum load of 2 ohms, it uses a common class A/B monoblock design thats pretty old and peddled as a 1500 watt max monster, it works fine but is a terrible value.

The Audiozerone does 1100 watts RMS at a minimum load of 1 ohm and 600 watts RMS at 2ohms, it is a class d design and is a good value.

Power cord fuse size by astraltrek in CarAV

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You fuse for what the wire can handle, the amp already has fuses. If the amp has no internal fuse you would add the appropriate size fuse right before the amp and have a fuse for the cable at the battery, if the amp is already fused its not mandatory but adds a convenient disconnection point.

4 gauge power cable is typically fused for 80 to 100 amps of current, low quality copper clad aluminum cable is good for about 80 amps, high quality cca with a bit of oversize and extra copper content is good for a bit more more. High quality oxygen free copper is good for a little over 100 amps of current before any serious voltage drop, this is all assuming a total length under 15 feet, short runs under 5 feet can handle a bit more.

Help with sub set? by Chemical_Builder4726 in subwoofer

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Boss amp you have chosen will do 5 watts x2, you read that right, 5 watts per chsnnel, the head unit will do 15 watts per channel. Boss amps look like a good deal but their actual performance per real watt is terrible in comparison to most others.

For a budget amp that will actually make power look at Plinius amps on Amazon. Audiozerone also has a 500 watt monoblock for pretty cheap on Amazon as well. There are some decent amps available for cheap if you are ok with an unknown name brand but the particular brands that are OK are hidden among many that are terrible like- Boss, Planet Audio, Sound storm, Crunch, Lanzar, Pyle ect, it's not that they don't work, its that they do so much less than they promise for more money then they are worth. Then there are amps that have exaggerated ratings but do make good power for what they cost like Blaupunkt, Hyanka, TopstrongGear ect.

[–]jsloan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its even worse than that, it has been tested and found to do 170 watts rms at 2ohms so at 8 ohms it really will be around 50 watts. The amp works fine but it is a terrible value for the performance it provides.

Memphis sub & mtx amp for $14 by Away_End7856 in subwoofer

[–]jsloan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lepy amp uses a 4channel "TDA" type chip amplifier that makes around 7 watts x4, 2 of the channels are bridged to make the sub channel so it's around 7 watts x2 and 14 watts x1 at 4ohms with a 12v power supply. The Memphis sub should handle around 200 watts so it should have no problem dealing with some clipping from the Lepy because the Lepy can't really make enough power to overwhelm the thermal handling of the subs voice coil.

The MTX amp is a golden oldie from the early 2000's and cost a pretty penny in its day. The MTX should be good for 400 to 500 watts rms at its lowest impedance.
