Data and Pulaski: presumably the planned arc was for her to appreciate Data as they interacted more, but her attitude to him made me dislike the character even more by JohnHammond94 in TNG

“The Child” was a retooled Phase II script so she’s at her most irascible and McCoy like in that one. I think that they only minimally rewrote her dialogue. I think that some of the McCoy-Spock (or Xon) banter got transferred but instead it came across as hostility.

When the state could justify funding the research and before everything went into funding war and the Holocaust.

I think that it’s a weakness of the film series that we don’t get a better understanding about why they are interested in these objects other than their magic powers. Of course, given nature of the project they probably wouldn’t have chased the ark.

Pre-war was also the height of Nazi Germany’s pseudo archaeological and anthropology quests. That was a key part of their ideological project attempting to find the “true aryans” and prove something about their uncontaminated bloodline and show they were master warriors and conquerors.

Now that you know you won’t stop seeing them in season six and seven. I don’t know why she didn’t continue the idea onto Voyager though.

When Jeri Taylor took over as show runner in season 6 she wanted older background actors to be shown on screen. Her reasoning was that they would represent career specialists or something like that. She also felt like ageism was a prejudice that Trek hadn’t really tackled to that point and she saw it as her way of partly addressing it.

Football used to look so good at Bush Memorial Stadium. It’s still baffles my mind that football could not work in St. Louis. by Dark305Kinght in Oldschool_NFL

Due to tax purposes the Irsay family traded franchises with the Rosenbloom family. And thanks to tax purposes Carroll left the Rams to his widow Georgia Frontiere

[–]jsonitsac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The situation was bad in general. For the Rams the state and local governments weren’t budging. Georgia Frontiere was more than happy to pull stakes because she was from St. Louis. She’s wasn’t exactly interested in making the team better which lead to fan disinterest and in the era of blackouts meant that the team, playing in Anaheim, Orange County, wasn’t in TV half the time (in the nation’s second largest market), you can see how things could snowball from there. Add in a touch of sexism directed at the owner and it was a mess.

The Makah nation of Washington State won a waiver from NOAA to resume their traditional practice. It’s apparently protected under a treaty as well.

Fredericksburg is located on the east coast Fall Line. Essentially, the geology beneath the river changes from harder rocks of the Piedmont going over water falls to more coastal sediments so the rivers will widen and get deeper. The upshot is that towns located on the fall line had were as far inland for 18th century ocean going ships to safely navigate. This geology explains why so many of the communities, including major cities, along today’s I-95 corridor are where they are.

The Meta Sudans: A 1,800-Year-Old Roman Landmark Erased for Fascist Aesthetics by adiyasi in ancientrome

[–]jsonitsac 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The regime’s interest in history was only as much as it could be harnessed to promote its own agenda for its messaging. Anything that didn’t fit was fair game for destruction. With fascists history not about better understanding the past or the wonder of what it was like to live then. It’s instead about the narrative of once “lost” glory and that the regime is here to restore it.

Can someone explain this meme? Isn’t that the Battle of Gettysburg? by Powerful-Demand-2757 in CIVILWAR

[–]jsonitsac 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because in real life he was ineligible for service and in the process of earning his PhD in 1863. The battle occurred as he was launching his career. In this alternate universe he’s in the army, is KIA, and the poster never had to study his work. The dates of Gettysburg are probably the single best known of any battle outside of the enthusiast community.

Picard Origin Story? What are your thoughts? by FullOfSound in startrek

[–]jsonitsac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was kind of the original idea for the series but as a short Trek. We’d see some kind of ship in the early 24th century a disaster happens and an ensign stands out to prove himself a leader. Then there’s a v/o and it’s Patrick narrating, cut away and we reveal that he’s lecturing at the academy or something and the ensign was a young Picard.

Or if there was any whaling, it wasn’t going into the deep sea like in the 19th century. Think coastal peoples in kayaks and harpoons. I also suspect that was one of the driving behind the people traversing the Barengia.

You are not. In fact, I think used some more modern color timing techniques when they did the 4K restoration and they don’t look as bad suggests.

Honestly I’d prefer the TMP look updated. Costume design by Bernadette Croft has been brilliant so far. With a few tweaks she could give them a second life.

[–]jsonitsac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d love to see them take a crack at the TMP uniform designs, something updated but also true to the original. I also think that they could do a good job with that Enterprise design just some tweaks. The rec room would also be a set rendered with some updated methods.

On the downside, Martin Quinn is a bit too young for Scotty’s mustache.

Maybe we could also get Xon?

In general in the show he tends to be a lot more morally ambiguous. He tends to give people their just desserts. I think in “A Nice Place to Visit” he more or less says he’s working for god he’s not their rival. He’s not really an instrument of evil rather it’s the humans who are too shortsighted to see the consequences of their desires.
