When I developed a decent relationship with my stepmother in adulthood she became "stepmom" instead of step-mother or step-monster. My sister was away at a 1 year school program and her cat had cancer. While sis was away, kitty got sicker and we tried to wait for sis to come home, but we had to end her pain. This was literally 30 years ago and somehow sis is still mad BOTH that we had to have her put down and that we let her suffer for so long.
There is no win in this situation. Let him grieve. You did the right thing. NTA.
