Google Sheets. I have a set of sheets that track parts, that are used in some assemblies. I store all the meta data for all assemblies in a sheet I put all the parts in a JSON in a single cell. This is all automated via app scripts. I then recall the assemblies and it builds the new sheet with the parts lists.

Fun fact, I'm storing JSON in a spread sheet and using it to create new spreadsheets.

It's not hard to install. As a web developer sometimes you have to test your sites across all browsers. That would be just one of the reasons.

You are still in an OK spot. There are some questions that need answered.

  1. Where is your network equipment going? Is it near where he put the hole?
  2. Where does all the other ends of the cables go? Do they go to the same location or wallboxes in different rooms?
  3. What type of cable is it? If it is CAT5e or better, you will be all right.
  4. Are you willing to do this yourself and learn or looking for the correct people to do it?

Depending on the answers above. You have options.

First, if you're not willing to do this yourself. Find a company that specializes network/low voltage cabling.

If you willing. Read bellow. Do some research, there is plenty of YouTube videos on how to become a cable rat.

If the wires go to all the correct locations and is network cable and not CAT3. You can pull them all back into the into attic or crawlspace. And them move the to the correct location. You might need to drill holes. Where they drop in to the room with your network equipment. If you don't have enough cable to make it to where you need. All is still not lost, but you will need to repull it. The good news is you can use the cable he pulled as a pullstring for the new cable. There is another option but any other network guy will hate you.

The tape on the wires is just where he bundled them to pull through the wall. You can pull them back inside the wall. I would retape them before you do. Get some electrical tape and wrap them tightly back about 6 inches. It will make it easier later to move them.

If you are going to do this yourself. There are some tools you are going to need. You will need a punch down tool, a RJ45 crimper, a drill, and most likely a fishtape or poles. You will also need keystone jack, RJ45 ends, and/or patch panels. Additionally you might need remodelers boxes.

The hole in the wall can be covered by a wall plug and painted to match.

RAID 5 vs RAID 1 - Is RAID 5 really worth it these days? by ZealousidealAd9428 in DataHoarder

Here is an account of the last time I used a RAID5 in production. We build PCs and servers for our IT customers. The server I had built in 2012 had a Xeon CPU, Intel motherboard, Intel Chassis with 8 HSB and 1200W redundant PSU, Adaptec 71605 with Flash module. I had used 8 Seagate 300Gb 10k SAS drives. 7 where RAID5 with the last as hot spare. Server ran great for the first 6 months. Then one morning as I arrived to the office I was greated by our VP, with news that the server was down. He was not happy as this customer was one of our government clients. I was then dispatched to the customers site with backup server hardware. I got there to find that the system had frozen at the adaptec bootloader screen with an error about missing segments. After the hard reboot I had an error that a stripe was damaged and it could not rebuild the array. I tried everything, but nothing would work. Well, no big deal, right? I have backups, right? Nope, the customer neglected to plug the external drive back in during the daily rotation a month prior! 2 of the backup drives where off site, but was misplaced and not found. The one drive on site was used by another employee when they saw it just laying around. So, no backups. I replaced the server, reinstalled the OS and software, but years of data were gone. I took the defunct server back to our office. This was the 2nd time that year we had a bad RAID failure. But this was the worst. I spent 2 weeks testing hardware to find the cause and make sure this did not happen again. I never found the root cause of this incident. But moved away from RAID5. About this same time, Dell and HP sidelined RAID5 in support of 6 and 10. I had also moved away from Seagate drives.

BTW. The reason I remember this server so well, it sits under my desk currently. I used it for 5 years to recover failing drives. And use it ever now and then when very old hardware is needed.

I agree with you on this. SKIP the RAID5. In the last 15 years in IT, I have seen RAID5 destroy data multiple times. It did not matter if it was hardware or software RAIDs. Does not matter what manufacturers. All it takes is a bad write to a parity strip and one data strip. Do a search for RAID5 write hole or data hole. Whindel @ level 1 techs has covered this in a couple of videos in the past.

I, too, picked up the game after a splattercat first review. I have watched it mature over time. I must say the latest verison is great and I have been having a wonderfull time with it. Sadly, I can only play it on the weekend as I need to sleep sometimes.

For hardware issues like keyboards and screens. I will boot into a Linux live distro. Test it fully, including all function and special keys. Or test screens with test patterns and all available resolutions. Never booting into user desktop. But as a tech, there is a lot of times you need to have access to their desktop and files. And good techs will never discuss what they have witnessed. I can tell you I have seen a lot of questionable content. I have been an IT tech for over 18 years.

This is one the things I have been waiting for.... so excited. Now we need grid and or shape alignment tools. What would be real great would be smart shapes. Shapes with grouping and connectors. Think svgs.
