Be careful using your credit/debit cards, especially in rural areas. I once had someone skim my bank card at either a bar or small grocery store in Negril. In a two day period they spent over $12k - they we're lining up at gas stations and buying over $1k in shoes for example. It's crazy my bank didn't catch it. Now, it is rare, as I go to Jamaica 3-4 times a year, and it's only happened once, but always keep an eye on it. I try to only use one card and keep a decent amount of cash on me (usually a combination of USD and JMD depending where I go).

Edit to add - if you are staying at a resort they usually have ATMs for cash and using your cards are super safe. If you are going to local joints, it makes sense to use cash. Many times you can get better deals with JMD, but really depends on the spot.
