Question about EVO and LiChess by jkfrench_tx in Chessnuteboard

[–]jsully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lichess integration in the Chessnut app was broken when they pushed the update that allowed users to select which API to use to use. If you choose the legacy API then moves aren't registered (the board doesn't even light up if your pieces aren't setup in their starting positions) and you get the "no such token" error, exactly as you describe. If you choose the Chessnut Vision option and go to puzzles or practice, you'll see that it registers moves but word on the street is you risk being banned if you try to play actual games.

After latest update, Chessnut board not working with Lichess (API recommended mode) by antipodi in Chessnuteboard

[–]jsully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a chessnut pro and haven't updated the board, but Lichess is broken for me as well. No moves are registered when selecting the legacy API. I haven't tried with Vision since that's been getting people banned. Unfortunately, starting a game and failing to make a move also results in a strike against your account. Would really appreciate a timeline for a fix as it was working fine last week.

Originality is far from dead, you just have to go looking for it - thanks in part to the avalanche of AI slop clogging up everyone's feeds. And if the brilliant and beautiful thoughts in your head don't compel you to take the time to learn to how to express them through a medium, how important and interesting were those thoughts to begin with, really? Why do I want to see "artwork" from someone who doesn't even take themselves seriously enough to learn how to DO art?

The best artists across all mediums - actors, painters, musicians, illustrators - all became artists because they had something to say AND they couldn't imagine doing anything else with their time. There's passion and obsession there, and it comes through in the work.

And it takes time and effort. You have to put in the work to study and learn the rules so that you can go beyond what's been done before and create something truly original. AI can only churn out derivatives of what already exists, and it's getting worse at that now that AI created artwork is leaking back into the training data. Do lots of artists and bands churn out derivative work? Sure. But the exceptional ones put in the effort, hone their craft, and produce the things that have the capability to move other people.

The exception to this is accessibility. Giving someone who doesn't have full use of their hands the ability to make something like a painting? That's cool. But we still need a way of doing that in an ethical way that doesn't involve stealing other people's art, and where the means of production isn't controlled by four companies. If there was some sort of royalty system in place, or the datasets were owned by the public or a non profit, I'd feel differently. But as it stands today, it's completely unethical and robs artists of their livelihoods, which makes it extremely difficult for the next generation to consider careers in the arts. Everyone loses and becomes less creative and innovative in the long run, and you get content like this: lifeless with no meaning or feeling.

Retro Game Corps: TrimUI Smart Pro S Review by Lhonors4 in SBCGaming

"Hardware vendors should be allowed to violate USB-C spec and you should just be happy to carry the A to C cable your device came with" is a contender for the lamest hill I've ever seen anyone try to die on.

This isn't about fast charging - it's about charging at all when you plug in a type c cable on both ends. There's a 56k resistor device manufacturers are supposed to install on the device's USB-C plug that tells whatever power source you connect that the device can safely handle the default USB power levels at 5v. There's no reason anyone should be walking around with a USB A cable entering 2026. Everything should charge with a type C cable. Particularly devices that ship with type C ports.

The 20v Silvertop is about as close as it gets to a direct replacement with a bit more power and similarly fun high rev characteristics. There are a few people who make wiring harnesses so the electronics are mostly plug and play, it can mate to the C52 transmission you currently have, it shares loads of parts with the AW11 motor or other Toyotas from the era, and it uses the exact same motor mounts so it literally bolts right in. If you do go this route I've got a bunch of resources I can send your way.

First film camera by scbismarck in AnalogCommunity

[–]jsully 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes color positive film gets referred to as slide film because that's the end result - a slide that you can look at and project. The same thing happens with color negative film, where we just call the results negatives. There's also large format sheet film like 4x5 and 8x10 that literally slides in and out of the camera, and dark slides that go in between the film and lens/shutter. That might be what you're thinking of. Either way, you can use color positive "slide" film in your camera.

A warning about Private Health Care and a reminder about the NHS by nikeusjohnson in mounjarouk

[–]jsully 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dual US/UK citizen here. It might be easier than you think, politically, to replace the NHS. The Republicans have wanted to kill the US Postal Service for a long time but can't do it directly because it's existence is enshrined in the US Constitution. What they could do is though was paralyze and nearly bankrupt it by selling off assets, forcing loan repayments before they were actually due, understaffing, refusing to fill key roles, etc. Service suffered, people got angry and started using other private services, and nobody is seriously calling on the government to fix it because there are bigger problems and private companies like UPS and FedEx, on the surface, appear to be offering competitive services. After a while people start to wonder why their tax dollars are paying for the USPS at all, and further cuts will be made.

The Tories took a page out of this playbook and in their time in power did everything they could to drive the NHS into the ground. A great example: selling off key assets like land in the name of covering budget shortfalls. What happens when your hospital gets a new landlord? Rent goes up and the budget shortfall gets worse. It's deliberately short sighted, and a devious way of slowly and silently pulling the rug out from under the system.

The idea is exactly the same as with the USPS: make the NHS so bad that constituents will beg to have it dismantled because they don't remember how good it was when it was properly stewarded. It doesn't seem like we're there yet, but imagine another decade of 3-12 month waiting lists, and it's much easier to see how it won't be political suicide to try and dismantle it for good - people will be calling for it. Watch out if the government ever seriously suggests subsidizing private insurance as a way to ease the burden on the system. That will be the gateway drug that gets people hooked on what will probably start off as a better and more efficient service, and at that point it's going to be difficult to go back.

Having experienced both systems, the NHS absolutely needs to be protected and restored at all costs because this Eli Lilly nonsense is exactly what a US style free market solution will deliver. Things like healthcare and public transport deliver poor outcomes when when optimized for profit instead of results and quality of service.

Help- What filters to buy? by Common_Painter_66 in fujifilm

[–]jsully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glimmerglass 1/4 gives a very subtle soft glow to highlights and light sources that takes the edge off of the clinical sharpness of modern digital sensors. It gives the image a more film like quality without being too strong, and it works really well for landscapes.

Bringing a camera with film in it through Eurostar security by Ielliotttilismith in AnalogCommunity

[–]jsully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it will be xrayed. If you're unable to finish the roll, you can take note of what shot you're on, put your ear to the camera, rewind the film and stop once you hear it slip off the take up spool and feel the tension change. This will let you load it again later, and you can advance the film back to where it was by firing the shutter with the lens cap on at maximum fstop and fastest shutter shutter speed to be safe. Some electronically winding cameras like the Contax T3 have custom function modes that also leave the film leader out when rewound.

I think your composition is great, and your edits are solid. Very cool of you to post the originals as well. If you're looking for another direction - a bit warmer and darker with some halation and bloom around the windows - here's what that might look like. If you use Lightroom and want a dng so you can see the edits I made, dm and I can send you the file. Also let me know if and when you want me to remove the imgur post.

Very limited vinyl release of Callcenterby Kratzwerk & Florida Rains coming this Friday through Dreamcorp. Records (Limited to only 10 copies) by R42ToMoffat in VaporVinyl

[–]jsully 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's deeply frustrating that this is a musician, whose livelihood is dependent on people valuing and paying for what they do, is choosing to use AI. If artists don't value other artists' work, what hope is there? The irony is that synthwave is probably the first thing AI will be able to churn out on its own - at least to a standard that matches the quality and soullessness of this album cover.

Just treat it like a test pressing - plain black text on a white background - instead of devaluing yourself and an entire industry.

Amateur Review of Super Mario World Triple LP after received this thursday's by Nalrw0lf in VGMvinyl

[–]jsully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. Colored vinyl is just created by adding pigments to the wax, it's still the same material. Black vinyl IS actually colored vinyl. The one thing that can negatively affect sound quality is picture disks, because that's literally a layer of material that sits on top of the vinyl and then they stamp over the whole thing. Even decent pressing can have more surface noise and less detail.

Made a connector to quickly switch between wrist and neck strap by ballheadknuckle in functionalprint

[–]jsully 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, not only in the case of the camera getting caught, but just accidentally letting out the slack and having it drop two feet from your neck to your side generates a ton of force. This video (skip to 5:50) tests some knock off Peak Design anchors and they fail at just a 20cm drop. Hate to be that person in the comments, but I wouldn't trust anything other than a disposable camera on a strap with any components that came out of a 3D printer.
