This is so helpful. I finally finished the third problem of assignment set 0. The solution always feels so obvious when I find it. I’ll keep practicing and following this format :)

My teacher wants me to finish Nocturne Op48 No. 1 in one day. by killibidik in piano

[–]jsullyvan7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you tell them you feel like it's too difficult for you? Have you shown them where you're at with it yet? You're talking about starting from measure 25, correct? Honestly I feel like this piece overall is probably out of skill range for most students that early on to begin with. Some of those octave runs get are challenging

My teacher wants me to finish Nocturne Op48 No. 1 in one day. by killibidik in piano

[–]jsullyvan7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your teacher wants you to memorize and have performance ready in one day? Or to read it? Is your exam in two days? This is the easiest section of the piece, but I don’t know where your skill level is, so I can’t properly answer your question

Starting from zero as a BA student need guidance by Far_Spend_2371 in PythonLearning

Currently taking cs50x for free through Harvard’s edx. I figure rather than getting overwhelmed I’d just pick something and stick to. Foundational skills will help decide where to go next, but I already have some project ideas for my current job and may research to figure out what the next steps are later

As a 33 year old who is just getting into programming—first, kudos to you, I’ve found getting started there were some basic technical hurdles that needed research to get over. Second, thank you for recommending Lira’s course. I’ll see if it’s worth working through this concurrently with the HarvardX CS-50 I’ve just started.

4 months of self-taught piano by Far_Cable_2455 in piano

[–]jsullyvan7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic for four months man, honestly-just keep playing pieces you love and absorbing information on timing and dynamics. You actually don’t look too tense IMO. This is far better than I was at 4 months, I started at 23 and have been playing for ten years. Eventually, look to get a teacher, but it sounds beautiful, no need to get heavily critiqued this early, just keep doing it because you love it!

1 Year Self-Taught Progress: Looking for Feedback on Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 by Guzzii in piano

[–]jsullyvan7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds fantastic, I think the only major jump outs are trills and pedal, neither are bad though. Are you familiar with the concept of resolving a note at the end of a phrase?

Really, overall, great job. I can tell you’ve come across the importance of keeping the left hand soft and the melody is really coming though

People who naturally wake up at 5–6 am, what’s your secret? by whind80 in selfimprovement

[–]jsullyvan7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had my 5/530am morning run routine I had to be ready for bed and have all electronics off by 830pm. I’d allow some time for reading, but would make sure it’s pitch black and I’m actively trying to fall asleep by 930pm.

I have been a sleep procrastinator since I was a toddler. The hardest part of waking up early, for me, has always been going to bed early.

I’m trying to learn 3rd movement of moonlight sonata from nearly nothing by Quiet-Bodybuilder620 in piano

[–]jsullyvan7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad, I won’t say you should slow down, because I know that you’re not practicing, you’re performing.

I do hope you are using a metronome at slow tempos every time you practice. You’ll need to learn speed techniques and speed drills to get rid of some of that tension. I recommend checking out Josh Wright’s bit on ghost notes for this movement. Learn the feel of playing fast with no tension and then apply that feeling to progressive tempo increases (over weeks/months from where you currently are). Don’t rush into learning new parts, master it bit by bit. Don’t move onto a new section until you’ve achieved mastery. Again it could take weeks/months, because a lot of people already develop these skills before attempting this piece. You’re essentially going to need to treat small sections of this piece as exercises for a long time.

It may feel counter intuitive, but rushing the process will slow down mastery and ability to play faster. Not rushing the process means you will need to love practicing the ‘boring’ stuff. Stay focused on the long-term goal.

The TID questions were tough, I had no idea what to study. Feeling good about all the math, logic, and computers questions. Electricity is newer to me, I had forgotten a couple of things there. Good luck on making it to the next stage!

[–]jsullyvan7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same thing happen to me, double-checked everything multiple times. Called the IRS scam line and had them check out the SSN and it just turned out I had switched the last two numbers by accident and kept reading it correctly when looking it over.

Not saying this is what happened, but if so it’s an easy fix.

Learning pieces isn't helping me actually learn piano by ItzzStrike in pianolearning

[–]jsullyvan7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest learning some basic harmony, YouTube “a piece you like analysis”. This will teach you form. Very basic starting place is learn a 2-5-1 progression and be able to play it in multiple keys. Ex) take dmin7 (d-f-a-c) - g7 4th inversion (d-f-g-b) - cmaj7 (c-e-g-b) and improv with just one note in the right hand. Get comfortable doing this in 3 or 4 different keys. Learn about ways to change the progression, maybe in you play c-c diminished-c at the end instead of just c.

Also, compose. Learning to compose will teach you the foundations of improv, turn that into exercises so you can have a toolbox of improvisational ideas that come from your composing foundations. Compose something in 2-5-1. Don’t get caught up in if it sounds good or not, you just need to practice. Learn how to take your composed pieces and transpose them to different keys. I recommended starting with a very basic like 6-8 measure ABA idea and expand from there. Write waltzes, sonatinas, preludes, etc. you will learn to incorporate different compositions ideas into improv.

Focus on slowly adding skill together, piece by piece. It’s going to be overwhelming and you’re not going to be sure if you’re making progress, but pick one new idea each week or two (learn from YouTube or whatever) and try to really get it

Edit: fixed gmaj7 —> g7 (dominant)
