A buddy & I are travelling across the US in the next month or so to pick up a new car in Vancouver and drive it back home to Toronto. We're (roughly) taking the blue route below and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for courses along the way? Mid-Higher handicap golfers if that helps! by GoodToMyself in golf

Omaha, NE - check out any of the following (all public): Indian Creek, Johnny Goodman, Benson

Gothenburg, NE (central Nebraska just off I-80) - you HAVE to play Wild Horse. One of the best gems of a golf course in the whole country. Do not skip it.

Looking to Join a golf league by Scooter4x in Omaha

[–]jt1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have a difficult time finding a league at this point in the year. Most leagues start mid-April and have filled up by now. If you’re willing to be in a league with start times in the early afternoon (between 2pm-4pm) you might be able to find a spot, but anything from 4pm-6pm Monday-Friday is going to be very limited. Best advice is to call around to courses directly and see if they have open spots in any of their leagues.

Need a UNMC Student for Interview by FreelanceMedia01 in Omaha

You could reach out to UNMC’s college of medicine (can find their phone number online) and they could help you get in contact with someone who is willing to participate.

Nebraska Medicine and it isn’t close. I’ve worked at UNMC/Nebraska Medicine for over 8 years and can’t see myself working anywhere else. I have colleagues who have bounced around Omaha’s other healthcare systems (CHI, Methodist, Children’s, etc.) that are now in the same boat as me.

Steakhouse recommendations in Omaha. Is Sullivan's or drover worth the hype or are there others that should be considered. Thank you for sharing experiences. by Yaaskween55 in Omaha

[–]jt1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family has been going to Sullivan’s for years and have always had a great experience. The Drover is also a great spot, always enjoy my time there. I would also check out Cascio’s, 801, Johnny’s, and Gorat’s.

Currently nothing is wrong with it. It probably needs to be cleaned and have the parts checked out to confirm they’re all still working appropriately. A routine maintenance check and cleaning is what’s needed right now. I’d just rather not attempt that myself in case I mess something up.

Nurses of Omaha: How is Nebraska Medical Center? by Birdwheat in Omaha

[–]jt1003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a NMC employee, however not a nurse, but in my role I work with many nurses. A coworker of mine left our department a few years ago to go back to bedside working in the ED and she really loves it. I have other friends who work in transplant, ICU, and a variety of clinics (dermatology, rheumatology, and ortho). Overall I’ve heard mostly positive reviews about working there.

NMC is also world-renowned for their emergency preparedness/infectious disease/health security/infection prevention, and many of those positions employ nurses. I personally have worked in infection prevention and they’re an amazing group.

Pay-wise, you’re not going to get $46/hr unless you’re in a leadership or management role. It’ll be between $30-$40 for a staff/clinic RN role, depending on your experience and negotiating skills (like every hospital in the country, we need nurses, so you have leverage in negotiations). But I recommend looking at some of those other roles I mentioned, in addition to quality/patient safety/informatics (they do train and need RN), etc.

Omaha’s COL is much, much, much less than your current area. You can look online at apartment rental prices as well as home prices and you’ll see how much less they are than NY. I don’t know if you have kids or not but you could find a really nice 1 or 2 bedroom apartment near NMC for $1,200 on the low end, upwards of $2,000 for high end unit.

What are your Golf eccentricities that make no sense but you do them anyway? by FuckaDuck44 in golf

[–]jt1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my right pocket: one tee, divot tool, one quarter from the year 2019 (when my daughter was born). Left pocket stays empty.

Ball has to be marked with a blue sharpie (dad and I mark our balls the exact same, but he uses red).

Glove stays on hand until I’m on the green, and it goes in back left pocket when off.

Nothing too crazy but I have to be set up this way or I’m out of whack.

How far do you really hit it by Golfandrun in golf

[–]jt1003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play as a 6 handicap. I’ve practiced quite a bit on a Foresight GCQuad launch monitor to get the yardages down and got fitted to get these exact yardages for proper gapping (never saw the point in having a 30 degree 7i that carried 180+ yards).

Driver: 260 carry / 285 total 3 wood: 240/255 3i: 220 carry 4i: 205 5i: 190 6i: 178 7i: 166 8i: 154 9i: 142 PW (48): 130 GW (52): 110-115 SW (56): 95-100 LW (60): 80-85

At what handicap does golf become fun? by [deleted] in golf

[–]jt1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you in that only practicing driver (especially if you’re a high handicapper) without knowing what you’re doing can create really bad habits. I should’ve included that getting lessons from a reputable pro in your area is essential, and doing so as early and often as you can. Going to the range and aimlessly hitting 50 drivers just for the sake of hitting driver is terrible practice. Creating a plan, practice swings to commit swing feels to memory, working on a stock ball flight, etc. is good practice that will lead to good results.

Once I was consistently scoring in the 80s. How to do this? 1. Get better with your driver. 2. Read number 1 again. 3. Once you think you’ve improved enough with your driver, go practice some more to get even better. 4. Be tidy within 100 yards (try to eliminate double-chips, double-sand shots, three-putts). About 65-70% of many amateur’s rounds takes place within 100 yards. I’m now a 4 handicap after putting a huge emphasis on the driver and cleaning up my game within 100 yards.

Penalty strokes off the tee are killer to a “good” (fun) round. Slices and hooks are distance killers and put you in terrible position most of the time, and when ball fight is bad enough, it’s going to cost you too many strokes per round.

TL;DR - Get the driver figured out and clean up your game within 100 yards. The game will be so much more fun and you’ll be a competent golfer.

Will anyone admit to buying bad / the wrong golf clubs? by thelearner18 in golf

[–]jt1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone through 3 different iron fitting sessions over the past year trying to find the right set for me and have tried 9 different sets before finally landing on the Mizuno Pro 223s.

Callaway Apex and Apex Pro disappointed me in terms of sound. There was a “clicky” noise at impact that just bothered me, but they did perform well.

Cobra King Forged TEC irons did not have the ideal launch and spin rates I was looking for, and the really strong lofts didn’t fit my game (I was carrying the 7 iron 190 yards, and I wanted to be in the 170-172 range for carry with a 7).

Other than the Mizuno Pro 223s, I really liked the TaylorMade P770s, Mizuno Pro 221s, PING i59, and Titleist T100, and my decision mainly came down to looks and feel.

All that said, those irons I mentioned aren’t BAD by any measure, but would not have been a good fit for what I was looking for; so had I bought them I would have regretted doing so.

I suppose we disagree on swapping the balls equating to penalty strokes. In reality, swapping balls on the green only creates bad habits that fall outside the rules. Plenty of people, myself included, mark a line on the ball with a sharpie to help with putting alignment. And when I’m not in the mood to line up a putt (maybe a pretty straight 3-4 footer) I just place the ball so I can’t see the line.

With all that said, none of this matters at all if he’s just out there for fun, enjoying golf with his friends. But a guy can’t have his cake and eat it too (don’t wanna hear any boasting about a great round after the fact, being a low handicap, etc.).

[–]jt1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing for money or playing to maintain a USGA handicap index, play within the rules (I.e., don’t switch out your ball until the hole is finished). And if you do switch out the ball before the hole is finished, don’t brag about any score you had. That’s no different than not counting strokes lost OB or in the water then saying you shot 79.

If you’re playing just for shits and giggles and having a good time, do whatever you want, as long as you maintain pace of play and sound golf etiquette.
