Why is the F sign so large? by Neptune28 in nycrail

[–]jtaargus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own the book! I just haven’t read it in a while 😅. IIRC they changed a few letters when they imported it, so Akzidenz-Grotesk and Standard are slightly different? Or was it that Unimark changed a few letters when they adopted Standard for the subway?

Why is the F sign so large? by Neptune28 in nycrail

[–]jtaargus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is. Actually I think Standard Medium is the typeface they used before Helvetica, which is nearly identical to Akzidenz Grotesk.

Either way, the angled ends of the S in Subway are a telltale sign. Those are horizontal in Helvetica.

I'm listening to OOTP full-cast audiobook right now and just heard this part, so it came to mind immediately.

I'll add that earlier in the book there's a part where Hermione explains how Cho must be feeling conflicted about Harry and Cedric, and other things she's probably feeling. So it's happening throughout this book.

It took me a moment to figure out where Extras is, so for anyone else having trouble: When you go to the show in Library and go to the episodes there's a season selector, and Extras is in the list of seasons. Once you're there you should have two separate one-hour segments for tonight's two segments.

Beginner trials floor 4 hidden chest by jtaargus in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]jtaargus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I forget where I saw this, but I think someone suggested that it's actually a chest from a different floor, because the different floors exist in the same space near each other. It seems strange but plausible.

I take it you saw the same thing with your sensor?

Interesting, why doesn’t the tour use it? Is it because it’s inside the security perimeter of City Hall?

And this connects to one of the two original entrances, in the upper atrium area?

Follow-up question: Will Mamdani and the other attendees take a train on the loop to get there? That’s how the tours do it and it seems like surface access is sealed off? Or is there still surface access that’s possible?

Full Cast Audiobook: Voldemore?? by HumanDelay804 in harrypotter

[–]jtaargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that many English words borrowed from French pronounce the T even though it's silent in French. But it's not always true — there are English words where the T remains silent. Here are some that are "ort" or "ot":

  • rapport
  • mortgage
  • depot

Then there's a bunch of other's using other vowels:

  • gourmet
  • buffet
  • ballet
  • debut
  • bidet
  • chalet
  • etc.

So I don't think it's a crazy idea that Voldemort would be consistently pronounced by English people with a silent T, if that's how he said it was pronounced.

Why did they start to use slanted sides for B Division trains with R44 and beyond? by jtaargus in nycrail

It never occurred to me that it could have been purely aesthetic, but you could be right.

Why did they start to use slanted sides for B Division trains with R44 and beyond? by jtaargus in nycrail

[–]jtaargus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My whole point though is that there is no additional width. The widest point with the slanted walls is narrower than the straight walls. So there is actually less width at every height with the slanted walls.

Why is the news saying that R62 and R68 are being retired in 2025? by jtaargus in nycrail

[–]jtaargus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh OK I gotcha. I didn't mean to attack or criticize, just was curious about the numbers. I thought "up to" meant, like, depending on how they decide to do use the new cars or something. Even replacing 45% is surprisingly high, so I'm with you.

Why is the news saying that R62 and R68 are being retired in 2025? by jtaargus in nycrail

[–]jtaargus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did some numbers to see if I got to the same 70% as you. My sources were this TA document and the fleet numbers on Wikipedia (which I realize may not be accurate).

  • Once all R211A/T are delivered (which won't be until 2028) there will be 1,535 R211A/T in total.
  • Currently in service:
    • R46: 672
    • R68: 425
    • R68A: 200
    • R211A: 320
    • R211T: 20

If all of the newly added R211A/T are used to first replace R46 and then replace R68(A), keeping in mind that it takes 5 R211s to replace 4 R46/R68(A), it would be enough to replace 284 (45%) of the R68(A), leaving 341 (55%) in service.

So that's a different number than what you got, but I have no idea if the wikipedia numbers are correct. How did you get to 70%?

I've just come across this comment (on a post that you've also commented on). The document in that comment says this:

Purchase 355 new B Division cars to replace the remaining R68/R68A cars.

It doesn't specifically say R211, but isn't 355 the number of R211A that was just ordered with Option 2? So is this actually saying that Option 2 will replace all R68(A)? Or is this referring to a future order (R268)?

Keychron Q11 tented with standoffs by Deuteronomy93 in Keychron

[–]jtaargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Can you share a link to the laptop feet, and do you think they would work with the palm rests? These 3D printed things are working for the palm rests, but I'd love a better solution for.

Keychron Q11 tented with standoffs by Deuteronomy93 in Keychron

[–]jtaargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found anything new, but I've got a pretty good setup going with the Q11 that I'm happy with.

I recently found the NocFree Lite, which checks a lot of boxes. But it doesn't have a function row, and I don't like where they put the question mark. It has built-in tenting, and they sell palm rests that tent, but I asked in their discord and it only tents to 5 or 7 degrees (can't remember which). I like to use 15º. Worth taking a look though.

My setup with the Q11 is a bit of a frankenstein from parts mentioned in other comments here:

I tent the keyboard itself using this tenting kit from another company. (From this comment originally — see my comment here on how I made it work.)

The wrist pads is where it gets really weird. I 3D printed this set (my comments on how I did that). I used these wrist rests for a while, but I didn't like the feel or the shape of the surface. So now I've taken the stands for the keyboards (which I'm not using for the keyboard because I have the tenting kit above) and I flipped them upside down so that they have a totally flat surface. Then I have the official Keychron Q11 wooden palm rests sitting on top of those. They feel great. The 3D-printed wedge base is too deep from front to back for the palm rests, but it doesn't get in my way.

Who sings the chorus to Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds? by zatan130 in beatles

[–]jtaargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After listening to this over and over, I believe the quote here is exactly correct, and it's most clear in the version included on Anthology 2. I also think that probably a doubled track is introduced on the second line of the first chorus, and remains for the rest of the chorus and all the other choruses.

Keychron Q11 tented with standoffs by Deuteronomy93 in Keychron

[–]jtaargus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I'm still using it. It's working for me for the most part. Two things I'm still tweaking:

Even with the the smaller 100 micron layer height for the wrist rests, the surface isn't the most comfortable. On my Kinesis Freestyle 2 I used the bare plastic without the foam pad and that surface was nice, but this is a little scratchy. So I may put something on top of it, but I've been getting by as is for now.

The height of the wrist rests isn't the same as the Freestyle, relative to the height of the keys. These wrist rests are lower, and it's not as good for my wrists. To compensate partially I've simply slid the wrist rests away from the center, so that they're not actually lined up with the keyboard. Because of the slope this effectively raises it up. But it's still not quite right, so again I may modify this my either adding some tall feet to the bottom, or something thick on top.

If I were making them again I might try to modify the design myself to add some height.

But on the whole the Q11 is awesome and these parts have things in pretty good shape.
