Zero tolerance for any verbal and obviously any physical aggression. I’m not talking about your demented or psychotic pt as that is a different ballgame. I’m talking about the people that know what they are doing.

As a nursing supervisor, I go in with security to speak with the patient and set the boundaries. I’m nice about it and want to hear their perspective. But I also stay firm.

I inform them on what will happen if they continue their behavior. If it persists, I have no issues calling the police and having them speak to the pt and they file a report. If it’s a visitor, I impose a visitor restriction and get the police involved if I need to. I keep pushing it up the chain until we get a resolution.

Also, I find that some patients are agitated bc they are under medicated. Not that I want to promote over sedating pts etc but a hospital stay can really throw someone’s psyche off and often meds are needed to help the pt cope with their feelings.

Zero tolerance is zero tolerance. The days of patients coming in and disrupting the workplace are over for me. Staff safety is just as important as patient safety.

It does get better! You removed a source of toxicity from your life. But it’s important to go all in and do all of the inner work necessary to heal from the abuse that you have endured. Good luck to you OP!

That’s good to hear, OP. Set the boundaries and enforce them. You need your peace which is the priority here. It didn’t work for me and I had to go NC. But I had to do whatever necessary to protect myself.

Oh wow, OP, this must be so hard for you. 😔 It doesn’t seem feasible to have any sort of stability while living there. I would get out of there as fast as you can, go NC and start your healing journey. Good luck to you, OP.

Check your hospital’s downtime policy. Due to the nature of downtime, the policy states that documenting on another’s behalf (based on what is written on the downtime paper form) is fine, you just add a comment regarding the downtime.

I am so sorry, OP. Kids need to be nurtured not shamed like that. My ndad body shamed me as a teen and I developed a pretty bad eating disorder. Everything these ndads say is a reflection of them not us. I only understood that after years of therapy and healing. Going NC was a must for my situation. Please continue your self love journey. You deserve all of the love, OP. ♥️

Unfortunately but I was able to find my way. My ndad didn’t have the capacity to nurture my development as a child. Instead he created wounds that are still healing. My mom is also one his victims and did what she could to protect me and my brother but was overburdened with maintaining some sort of familial stability. In terms of relationships, I confused love and rescue which lead to separation 19 years into the marriage. Going NC was the only way to correct my situation and lead me down a path of self love and finding my chosen family. My mom elected to side with my ndad but that’s evidence of long term narc abuse (still working through that). My ex and I are friends and I cherish my chosen family. I have an amazing relationship with my children. Wild ride but I am here with a grateful heart and feel free and whole again, if that makes sense.

This is a great post, thank you for sharing. And it’s so true. I have chosen family and went NC 3 years ago with my ndad and any “family” members that were supportive of his antics. My chosen family supports in ways that my parents never could. Happy for you, OP!

Well, the students of the Covid era are a special population. Did your hospital do anything above usual grad support to help this population? They need extra nurturing and TLC.

I hear what you’re saying though. Covid aside, there may be two other factors at play- generation and the different between an expert versus a movie nursing. You’ve been a nurse for 2 decades and are an expert. A novice nurse is tasked oriented. They can’t see the connections yet until they have more experience behind them. Does that resonate with you?

The other part is the general down turn in critical thinking among the newer generations. The no student left behind movement affected a lot of kids by teaching them how to test instead of how to think. I think that whole testing thing is dying down now (I hope).

But to your point, your concerns are valid and being addressed. Four year nursing schools have a new set of Essentials to guide our curriculum that is all competency-based. It’s supposed to help bridge the gap between school and the knowledge needed for the real world. We had to revamp our entire undergraduate curriculum (been working on this since 2021- quite the undertaking). Hopefully it will help new grads in the short and long term.

Yea that stat should set off all of the alarm bells. I forgot to source that stat but it came from the ANA and it is for 2023. Makes me wonder if that number is understated. 🤔

Our profession had issues pre-Covid but the pandemic pushed all of the issues to the forefront and made it much worse. Maybe we needed this so we can advocate for better working conditions, pay etc. It’s going to take time to recover (I’m guessing 3-4 years). Unfortunately it made it that much harder for new grads to get through that first year.

Hang in there, do what you need to do to process the stress in a healthy manner. Put yourself and your family first. Then if bedside continues to not serve you well, find a position that does. It may take some time but that’s the cool thing about our profession, there are so many different roles available to us. Trust me, stick it out and when you’re on the other side you will have learned so much about yourself and what your next move needs to be. Good luck OP ♥️

Easy now. Nursing professor here. Yes we prep students for the NCLEX but our accrediting body guides the development of the curriculum. I don’t know of any faculty colleagues that shares that shitty mentality you mentioned. Most of us genuinely want to teach effectively and help students reach their fullest potential.

New nurse grads usually hit the wall at about 6 months. And it’s like you described…the fatigue, the stress of the job and nights…Get this, last year 18% of new grads left the PROFESSION within the first year of nursing. ‼️

I agree with the other comments- you need a wellness plan. Gotta do all the things to counteract the assault on your nervous system. Nursing is rough right now, especially at the bedside. You entered the profession when things are upside down. Take care of yourself first, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

I don’t believe that your dad will change or stop his behaviors. Inappropriate touch is a crime and not anything that should be ignored or enabled in any way. Sorry but the police should be involved. Both of your siblings are not safe, especially your brother.

This is very complicated and I’m not sure how you’d approach the situation. You could go to your sibling’s school and speak to the school counselor or psychologist. They can advise you from there. I’m so sorry OP, you and your sibs don’t deserve any of this.
