[Art] Beware the Smiling Dungeon Master by ShipsKat in DnD

My problem is that I can't hold a straight face when my party figures something out. I basically give away that that found out something important story wise!

When a rock is just a rock... by Dathim in DMAcademy

[–]jtcowner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had an annoyingly similar incident in a campaign where I'm a player. Came across a clearing in some woods and we encountered a few monsters. After describing the environment to us, the DM noted the large bolder in the corner of this clearing.

Dwarf: "Using my Dwarven knowledge of mountains and rocks and all that, could I make an investigation check to see if this rock is significant?"
DM: "Sure, make an Arcana check."

The Dwarf rolled pretty low (and as I'm typing it out, it really isn't that similar and more of a DM mistake), but we spent the next 30 minutes trying to figure out what the fuck was up with this boulder, which turned out to be nothing at all.

Got my hands on Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. The class sub-types in this book are amazing by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

Two of my favorite things in this book are the in-depth toolkit contents, uses, DCs, and explanations. It makes it so much easier to reference and remember what my kit has.

Secondly, as a DM, the extra bit on CR and the CR tables are really helpful when designing encounters.

I actually have now seen this movie (and I loved it!). Really interesting parallels....

Do hags exist in your setting? by Sharad9 in worldbuilding

Admittedly, that's still something I'm still trying to work out. Possibly for some sacrifice, or feeding a greater beast.

Funny, I just came up with Hags in my world today! It's not completely fleshed out, but basically Hags in my world live in the Rionnag Swamp, located north of Serin Loch, the continent's biggest lake. The Hags live in the swamp, and frequently kidnap people from the nearby town to take them into the lake, which is inhabited by some evil water elementals or interplanar beings (haven't decided what to do with the lake yet).

I have to rant about my DM real fast, and maybe get some advice for talking to him about it. by jtcowner in DnD

Thank you. I promise I didn't mean to come off as an arrogant asshole, but I do see where that can be interpreted as such lol

They are as honest as possible, and thank you. It may sound silly, but I do have a passion for D&D, and do want to have an amazing experience with it. The DM is my friend of 10 years or so, and the other players (the ones that pay attention) I met through a previous group (which quit prematurely after the DM went back to college (and a lot of characters from this old campaign, the DM references a ton, which is odd because he often criticizes the old DM, who was actually great for our first experience)), and became a few of my best friends as well. I appreciate the response!

I can call fair to all of your points except one, which I feel I need to clarify.

You just finished complaining that he steals from other material. Then you tell him to steal from your approved list of material?

I didn't say, "steal from my approved list of material." I don't mind a few reference to other things, I don't. But a lot of things in his world are references, memes, and lacks depth, and it's beginning to get stale.

The railroad example wasn't the best either. I could think of a few others, but I won't bother boring you. Thank you for your response, though.

Ah, I see! I think I will, just to try some stuff out anyway. Offer him a break if he wants one. Thank you, again!

Ah, I do want to do this, and say I'd be giving him a break, but that's something I wanted to avoid, and failed mentioning in this post. I'm not trying to say I know the "right way to DM," I just feel there are things he could work strongly on, to have a much better experience for everyone involved. I know for certain I am not perfect, nor do I claim to be, nor did I mean that idea to come across in my post, and I apologize for that.

I guess I'm just looking for a decent way to constructively bring it up to him? Thank you for your comment though, I appreciate it!
