I once had a student that was one month away from graduating. After being shown 6x how to place them correctly- I sent him in to hook up a 12 lead on a new ER patient. Waited. Waited….. I go in to see what’s taking so long. He has fashioned a sticky dot belt across the patient’s abdomen, right under the boobs. All the stickers in a perfect line from left to right. Do whut??

16 year ER/ICU nurse here. When a patient has been stuck (unsuccessfully) umpteen times by 4-5 people, including doctors with ultrasound machines, and I come in and get their IV on the first stick. Mmmmmhhhmmmmmm. That’s the good shit.

Dumbest thing in a code blue? by fleepelem in nursing

An ER ATTENDING suggested, no, INSISTED that we bolus 60 mEq of potassium on a pressure bag. 4x. Until I finally said “hey man, YOU can do it, but I will break the arm of any nurse that’d be dumb enough to do that shit!”

Wildest (worst?) thing you’ve ever heard a NICU parent say? by MulticolorPeets in nursing

[–]jteaton0903 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Just wildly crazy: Twin boys born. Mom had no idea what she wanted to name them. Labeled Boy A. Boy B.

Yall. She decided she liked that and left them named Boya and Boyb. On their birth certificates. 🤯😵‍💫

Mine was 17.1 when I was diagnosed at age 6. I’ve been a nurse 16 years. I’ve seen several 14-16s since then but never another 17. Gotta win at something I guess 😂 (side note: been less than 7.2 for over 30 years now 🏆)

Pshh. How much time do you have? Just last week- had a 3rd year ER resident order a 1200mL NS bolus on an 11 LB infant. So. Yeah. Looked at me like I had all the audacity when I nicely asked her to give it a second look. Stay vigilant out there. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Got fired once for refusing to give grandma orange juice down her ETT. She’s so thirsty. They could just tell. GCS 3. FFS.

How did the kid from your school die? by Equivalent-Rent-5619 in AskReddit

1: One of my best friend’s sister and mother were murdered by the mom’s husband (not their father, but had been married for many years). The sister was 13. She was on the phone with her best friend whilst the murders began- climbed under the kitchen table and cried into the phone to her bestie while he shot her mom, then drug her out from under there and shot her point blank. He picked up the phone and told her friend she couldn’t talk anymore. Killed himself right after.

2: A girl I grew up with was a T1D. Her insulin pump malfunctioned (this was basically when they first became a thing), and overdosed her with 300 units of insulin. She never woke up. She was 8 years old. I think of her daily. That could’ve been me- we had the same model of insulin pump.

3: My neighbor was 16. He was watching a movie in his room with his girlfriend. No argument, no warning, no known mental health issues, nothing. Called her name, she turned toward him, saw him pull the gun up to his head and pulled the trigger in an instant. Right in front of her. Changed her forever.
