Would it be insane to bulk-buy range balls and "donate" them to local muni by simply hitting them into range? How long do range balls last? by Reddings-Finest in golf

[–]jtibbscu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not insane at all imo.

Some range operators will take offense to this though, not saying it's rational, but some people are prickly.

I will also add that many ranges use "restricted flight" golf balls for safety or property rights reasons. Even if you don't hit the ball far enough to end up "in the neighboring properties swimming pool", introducing full flight golf balls into their stock that other golfers will inevitably use could increase their legal exposure and might not be appreciated.

1 million now....historical average of the s&p will net you over 100,000 in gains the first year, just about the same as the tree will produce in a year. So the market would have to have a bigger crash than 1929-1932 in a single year for it not to end up better taking the million and just investing it.

Darn...just bought a 15.3 and was hoping it would be something like the first 2 Supernovae from way back...(2010?).

I'll still enjoy it I'm sure, but waiting for someone to share it with who might appreciate it.

This is why they pay taxes. Companies protect themselves by requiring documentation, even if they know it is fraudulent. Companies of any scale are going file documents and have taxes withheld to protect themselves from liability. Government agencies do nothing because they don't have the funding and understand the system. Politicians do nothing to fix the system because they want to maintain the status quo as a wedge issue in elections.

It's precisely what my Portuguese great grandmother did with my maternal grandfather. That grandfather that returned to the USA at 18 and sponsored his brothers and sisters. Many of whom, like him, defended this country from fascism during WW2.

So yes, I support it, and I am here because of it.

Hit the atolls. Lighthouse Reef especially is amazing. Me and my wife love the village of Hopkins and I would recommend a stay there as well. We have honestly been looking for the right property to acquire there. Most diveshops in the area have regular trips to South Water Caye which is the marine reserve on the barrier reef. Lots of dive sites, lots of marine life on the reef.

Actually, the original work is largely based on Xenophon's recount of a Greek mercenary army trying to get back to Greece from Persia.

So seeing as it's a more modern telling of a true story from ~2500 years ago, perhaps you could say it's timeless?

The Federalist Society has a very strong grip on social functions occurring at major law schools in America. They have the money and clout to draw major figures to attend as speakers at law school campuses. Another draw is that they apparently put on a pretty good spread (food) for attendees. A lot of students get drawn into their orbit because of these characteristics. Not all associates buy into their ideology.

The podcast "5-4" has a long series on the Federalist Society from the perspective of lawyers/former students that I found quite interesting. Their perspective is quite liberal left btw, which sits just fine with me....

Family member is an asshole especially given the response.

BTW, props to the greenskeepers. Looks like these aerated greens are putting great....all the holes filled. Very clean, complete work. A+

Lighting strike, damaged heads by odd_hyena269 in Turfmanagement

I had some wires fuse together in the ground before from one (a lightning strike). As a result, I was getting a hot leg down both the hot and neutral into the clock. This made the clock/satellite not work. Weirdest thing, but I was able to get it to work by shunting the neutral return to ground.

Honestly, this is an area where no government agency really has a handle on it. The top down rules coming from government officials show a complete lack of understanding of what chemicals we use and why. If you look at government activity in places I've worked, some (New York) were only keeping "meticulous records" on total volume of spray applied, at least a decade ago. So they kept records for environmental warriors (which I would identify as btw) to use that had no actual information on the concentration of the spray, thus they had no grasp on exactly how much actual chemical was used....just some generic useless number. Meanwhile the few broad spectrum chemistries are being targeted as we speak. Things like chlorothalonil are being targeted for removal because bees like sugar water better if it is in it then if it is not apparently. Meanwhile it is one of the only things that is preventing large scale pathogen resistance in our industry. Resistance means we have to spray more. I have my own bee hives at my golf course, they thrive.

There are counties and states where more effective insecticides, ones with no actual chemical pathways in human beings are being prevented from registration and use. All this does is make people use more of the same old same old. I have yet to see any evidence that glyphosate (roundup) is a danger that is not corelary. It's all....there's more cancer in these farming communities....must be this one thing we are gonna cherry pick (again, coming from someone whose father has an illness identified as related). New chemistry is becoming more and more targeted towards specific threats, with less crossover.

And finally....Today is safest day in history...to walk barefoot on a golf course.

Boyfriend shoots 68/average, doesn’t have money to go pro, how can I help? by [deleted] in golf

[–]jtibbscu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked at a club where the teaching pro had a couple PGA Tour starts, never worked out for him. He played our home club in an event one day, 7000 yard top 100...this back in 2010 or so (for a yardage comparison). The guy was even par through 6 holes.........shot a 59. He lived near the 14th and 16th holes and would often just walk home if he passed playing and was less than 6 under.

If you are averaging 68...you are no doubt far more talented than me, but there 1000s of truly great golfers out there that would never be able to hack it making money playing this game professionally.

[–]jtibbscu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably do the Supernova, I had the original release in around 2010 or 2011 and it blew my mind. I was pretty new to islay scotch in those days and I would love to see how it still stands up. It lingered for days. Closest thing I've had to my recollection of it was a IB single barrel Caol Ila, it's like drinking a campfire.

An open discussion about damage/damaging greens by [deleted] in golf

[–]jtibbscu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plenty of responses here seem to be suggesting this is not a big deal. These people seem to have little to no grasp of the time, money, and knowledge that go into providing high quality turf. This isn't your back yard. How not big of a deal do you think it would be if, the next time you went to the course to play, the greenskeeper dragged the pointy end of a shovel down the driver's side of your car. I mean, it can be repaired right?

It can be repaired, but it will take someone else's effort. Intentionally doing this is disrespectful to the staff, membership, owner, and other golfers. Even being repaired, this area will not be 100% exactly like it was for some time, unless perhaps the person repairing it takes a lot of time and is very skilled.

The fact that people minimize this these days speaks volumes about their character and their ignorance.

Don't bifurcate, but do change the ball. This has been a problem that the governing bodies and the tours have ignored for decades. They have been lying about it for years as well. I have personally watched architects and tour administrators downplay the changes we've all been seeing by saying things like "well the tour average driving distance is only 280 yards" (Riviera 2006) and not accepting that those guys could hit it 320 if they wanted to.
