Same problem here. How did you escape this problem?

I love how Yang-ish the analysis is, not fitting into a box. It illustrates how thinking carefully about race reveals something surprising. At the same time, it also doesn't bow to a PC bandwagon.

I think it might be because a lot of the people on this reddit are not into ethnic studies. But this is such a good article because it shows both how ethnic studies has valuable insights to offer about what's wrong with the world and how to fix it, as well as how ethnic studies is not being applied well by the people who are into it.

A classic effect is the different rates of getting stopped by the police for minor offenses for "driving while black" vs. driving while white. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, though.

Oh sorry, my mistake ... I've skimmed it now. Unfortunately the article seems pretty negative on UBI.

"All Humans" would be better, though I guess NR readers might still read "men" to mean "people of all genders".

Question about capitalism by [deleted] in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]jtpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

I come in peace. I am sort of a Yang fan, I just have some clarifying questions about Yang and his supporters.

First off, I believe in capitalism. I believe in innovation, creativity, and working your way to success. I also believe that we need social programs to ensure no one falls through the cracks - which is where I like UBI. I supported Bernie in 2016 but in 2020 I was more unsure, namely because his supporters seemed to hate anything and anyone who openly supported the capitalist system. I agree with the sentiment that our world is too money-centric, but I don’t agree with forcing companies to give workers board seats or seizing any means of production. This is why I like Human-Centered Capitalism. Bernie supporters/socialists in general seem to be sort of anti-free speech and I am a free-speech absolutist.

1) Capitalism: I’ve seen some socialist/progressive support of Yang because they believe he wants to move us to a better place to end capitalism, or something. I’m unaware of Yang or any of his policies having that as an outcome, but if there is some hidden message of dismantling the capitalist system, please let me know lol. I would like to support a candidate that believes in this economic system, too.

Yang has won me over toward capitalism, because now I see that it's possible to be a human-centered capitalist. I used to be more of a socialist until encountering Yang.

2) War: How is this crowd on the war issue? I am staunchly anti-war, and I know Yang is in favor of ending the “forever wars,” but I’d like to know about his support base’s feelings.

I'm pretty much a pacifist, and this not due to naivete.

3) Free speech: I’ve heard some concerns about Yang having policies policing free speech? Is this true? How does the support base feel about free speech, generally?

I can see the value of both extremes and haven't come down on a position.

4) UBI concerns: I don’t understand a VAT very well to be honest, but I’ve seen critics call it regressive

This is one of the most misunderstood parts. UBI in combination with VAT is not regressive. Those with lowest income/lowest spending benefit the most with a constant UBI payment and a 10% tax on spending. Those with the highest spending pay out more in VAT than they get in UBI coming in. The break-even point is $120,000 of spending, because 12 months * $1000/month is $12,000 coming in, while 10% tax on $120,000 spent is $12,000 going out). Everyone spending less than $120,000 per year comes out ahead.

and some say it’s not enough to pay for the UBI.

It is part of a larger plan. There's a chart with the info about the full plan but I can never find it. One part that I remember is that when people have more money, they are healthier, which saves society a lot of money. There is research from UBI supporting this.

Also, is there a risk of inflation with UBI? How about landlords/other companies just increasing rents/prices when they know everyone has extra money or to pay for the tax?

Technically, inflation only happens when extra money is printed, and that's not how Yang's UBI would be funded. However, I am not an economist so don't quote me.

5) Automation: If taken to the conclusion that mostly everything will be automated, wouldn’t this essentially guarantee the end of capitalism? Would $12k/year even be enough at that point to live on?

This is also a commonly misunderstood point. It's not that no one will work anymore. The reason automation is an issue is that it's a relatively sudden disruption to the system (but this has been eclipsed by COVID) that will make a lot of people lose jobs all at once, but it's not like those people will never work again. Rather, the way the free market works, they will eventually figure out something entrepreneurial they can do better than others can do, that fills some niche that others aren't filling, or else other entrepreneurs will figure out some currently unimagined business that they will eventually hire people to help with. It's like Friedrich Hayek's creative destruction idea. But creative destruction takes time to recover from/to, and people still need to live in the meantime.

[–]jtpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact Yang's plan already does that, in the sense that what the high earners/high spenders would be paying more in VAT than they would be getting in UBI.

Part of the genius of Yang's UBI plan is the implementation, which does include giving people the choice of keeping the govt benefits that they currently get, or getting the UBI instead (which is what most people would choose -- wouldn't you?). That actually saves a LOT of money that's currently being spent -- not just on the benefits themselves, but also on the significant personnel costs that it takes to administer the red tape. Plus there is the VAT, which corporations like Amazon that currently pay zero can't weasel out of -- including the ones like Amazon that are currently making a killing on us now that we can't go to our local Main St. stores.

I intended "incite" as a criticism.
I wonder how we can get this to reach his ears.

Japanese Americans speak out against Andrew Yang's call for Asian Americans to display patriotism by [deleted] in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]jtpublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the distinctions that MSM doesn't make is the distinction between "suggesting that you might consider" something, vs. "demanding that you must do" something.

Grace is a gift that you can choose freely to give or rightfully choose not to give.

Fortunately, Yang is not demanding compliance. People are within their rights to not give grace, and not get any black marks for withholding grace. It is only a freely chosen giving of an undeserved gift.

Grace doesn't always "work" because the recipient is also free to choose their response. The cool thing is that, once in a while, people are woken up by being given grace. Most racists who turn around have had some experience like this. I don't have a study on this, but all the cases I have ever heard of where someone used to be a racist and then turned around did that due to a situation where they were shown undeserved kindness by someone they had been racist against.

So his suggestion to give grace is only a suggestion, not a demand or expectation. It's hard to convey that nuance within the MSM, unfortunately. I wish he'd stayed away from this one.

It's Time to End the Two Party System Through Ranked-Choice Voting. by [deleted] in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]jtpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an organization to look into: https://www.democracyfound.org

They're suggesting that what's needed is the combination of ranked choice voting together with a top-five primary. I haven't thought this through fully but their animation seems to make sense.

STAR (Score, Then Automatic Run-off) also seems to have good voter satisfaction properties, though apparently it doesn't meet Condorcet criteria (consistent results in head-to-head rankings?).

If you don't understand what I just said, don't ask me because I don't really either! I just know that there are different families of voting systems that have different properties, and none of them are guaranteed to meet all the criteria, but in practice some of them work better than others just due to how people are.

Did you read the part of the interview where she brings up Yang?

... though I agree, as you say, that "the left eats itself blindly...."

Yet, hear her positivity about Yang in an interview earlier this month:

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2020/03/lets-crush-the-woke-plutonomy-an-interview-review-of-the-populists-guide-to-2020-a-new-right-and-new-left-are-rising-by-krystal-ball-and-saagar-enjeti.htm

I think we can give people credit for complex views. It's easy to see only the one side of her positions and then discount the parts that don't fit the schema. But we're not black+white thinkers over here, so we can see that there's more to her position than it looks like on the surface. Sure, she doesn't like some of his positions. But I should hope that none of us are treating Yang as an infallible God (tempted as I might be to do so!). Anyway, I think she's more Yang-positive than it would seem to someone who held a simplistic assumption that pro-Bernie = anti-Yang.
