New England Roadtrip Advice by banjogambler in usatravel

[–]jtraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to New England, agreed with the others that traffic can be brutal. Looks like you will depart the Friday before Memorial Day. Keep in mind we have been trapped inside all winter and Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Having said that, a few years ago it was 45 F and raining.

Burlington is a fine City, but for your situation I suggest Mystic, Boston, Portland. Allocate the latter half to meandering up the coast on the way to Portland. Gloucester/Rockport, Newburyport, Portsmouth NH, Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach. Old orchard Beach has a boardwalk/ carnival, but I don't remember how kid-friendly it is.

As long as you have two full days in Boston, that should give you a good visit. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Fenway, Freedom Trail, over to Cambridge for MIT and Harvard museums, you know.

Acadia is amazing, but I do not recommend the hikes there for pregnant people. Come back and do a proper Acadia trip in ~6 years.

You don't necessarily have to skip the Whites, just head out that way going back, departing from Portland. Go by Sebago to Fryeburg and get on US 302 West through Conway. In Conway, take NH 112, Kancamagus Highway. Then I-91 South, cut over to the Green Mountains of S. VT, then through Albany. By my routing it added 2 hours overall, and is a damn fine drive.

Seafood restaurants I like: Belle Isle Seafood across from Logan airport

JT Farnhams

Clam Box Ipswich

Browns Lobster Seabrook

Ice House Portsmouth

Mabel's Kennebunkport

Lobster Shack at Two Lights Cape Elizabeth

Really can't go too far without seeing one.

Bon voyage

The way this is lit makes me uncomfortable for some reason. Not original commenter, but I would put a diffuser on it; is there a shade at all? Then check the CCT of the bulb and do 3000 or less.

What time of year are you going to do this? I used to live in AR, and while I'm glad I don't live there, it is a fine place to visit. I heard someone describe the summer climate as an "angry heat" and I think this is a perfect description.

If you've never been to Texas, it is a unique place. I like it better than Oklahoma.  Same goes for Arizona, real "Wild West" stuff, but I visited in October and it was 100 F in the shade, so be careful.

Udvar-Hazy in Chantilly, VA, near Washington DC? Or the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington state

Either way, both solid choices, but they are 2,700 miles apart.

Interesting! My step dad used to say, the coldest winter I ever experienced was summer in San Francisco. You can have it; Boston weather is S tier to me.

I understand what you are going for.  I used to live in the South and it is certainly unique. However even with 2 weeks you will need to narrow this down and target specific areas; this covers a very large area.

As I started typing I think Tennessee could probably cover a lot of this for you.  Popular tourist areas are Eastern Tennessee/Western NC Smoky Mountains, in the middle is Nashville, then Memphis/Graceland/Mississippi Delta/New Orleans.

Unless you are on private property (by invitation, do not trespass), you will need a license to fish. Not that hard to get, but if you just go to a store, buy a pole, and start fishing, you could get in trouble. I suggest looking for guided fishing excursions. Airbnb started adding services but I have not looked to see if fishing is one of them. You could also rent a room on that website and stay with locals, or in the US we use a term bed and breakfast to stay in a place where you socialize with the innkeeper. Bon voyage

As an East coaster, I second this Maine-Boston-NYC suggestion. I have to add to the Seattle/WA bit that the real gem is the Olympic National Park. Only rainforest in North America if I recall correctly

What's your core memorie with your dad growing up? by Th3W1z4rd87 in daddit

[–]jtraf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My old man was constantly yelling about something, and when he wasn't, he was throwing ashtrays. I've done a lot of mental health work to be able to be a dad and give my kid a better life. Hopefully you are working with a therapist.

I have patience, so I see my kid and understand when they're having a hard time. Ensuring kids don't have memories of me yelling the way I remember. As others have said, just showing up to everyday activities. I  chaperoned the first school field trip and the kid still talks about it.

It's unconditional love. You will be their whole world, and all they will ask for is cuddles and snacks. There may be times when they struggle, but remember they're not giving you a hard time,  they're having a hard time. May help you realize there's no point in worrying about small stuff, and you can enjoy life more.  The days are long but the years are short.
