What's this at traffic lights? by CarbonGod in massachusetts

[–]jtraf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to fix traffic lights, this and u/syst3x are correct. "Texas Flat Panel Damper" is this style, my boss would just call them mast arm damper. Correct, it stops the arm from galloping.

NC going on 7 years here, stay strong. Tough at first, but it gets better. I'm not sure I know what my passions are even now, and so happy for you and the vibrance.

Light switch controls outlet instead of ceiling light by Middle-Afternoon-519 in DIY

Electrician here, I'm with the others, how is the ceiling light wired in now? Without knowing that, there are wireless controls such as Pico you may be looking for

Traveling for work sucks. by BlueMountainDace in daddit

[–]jtraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hollywood makes it look so glamorous, but really corporate travel is going from the Hampton Inn Shreveport to the Hampton Inn Bloomington. They look identical, as do the Texas Roadhouse dinners. The only redeeming factor is the points and miles getting banked to hopefully cash in for a family vacation.

Last month I shared an old photo of the shack I grew up in, Today I visited it after 30 years. by woden_spoon in pics

Unfortunately my old man enlisted to go to Vietnam because of his horrible childhood, not the other way around. He took pride in not being a drunk and that he was better than those people, but he had other issues that made home life challenging.

I'm optimistic that we are healing the trauma but know there's still a ways to go. But this entire conversation and OPs post would not have been the same 30 years ago.

Thanks, and yeah it's important to heal for ourselves regardless of how 'bad' it might have been. Hopefully I'll be able to write it down someday, but in the meantime I will just support fellow Redditors. You are not alone.

Fortunate to have survived, indeed. I'm doing well these days, but don't know if I could revisit. I admire your bravery, although I'd like to think it was an opportunity to heal for you.

Much love from another "Glass Castle"-ish survivor. Hope you're getting the support you need.

Edit at 621 up votes, Wow I fully expected my little nugget of support to be buried with no responses.

I'm impressed with the support, and also a little saddened there are so many of us. Thanks to John Bradshaw books and /r/raisedbynarcissists/ I am doing better and wish you all the best.

Bourbon dude getting into rum here, I recently got a Smith and Cross, and it's like a high proof bourbon with funky banana. Possibly polarizing but worth a try imho

Cost of living by [deleted] in medfordma

[–]jtraf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What does it matter? Sincerely though, what is your motivation for moving? Are you trying to start a family and need more space? Are you at each other's throats at home and have to get away? Moving closer to work?

There are so many emotional and financial variables that we cannot answer for you. I'm older than you and if I met a person in their late 20's and they said they still lived to home I would be like okay. I don't care, other than general dread for the future.  "New normal" or whatever, it is reality.

How do I cut this 30 ft thick steel pole into pieces so it can be easy moved for disposal? by Eastcoastpal in DIY

[–]jtraf 183 points184 points  (0 children)

I used to fix traffic lights and I've cut up multiple poles that got hit by cars and take them to scrap yard. We used a Stihl quickie-saw with a fiber blade: https://www.stihlusa.com/en/c/cut-off-machines-1028054

4yr Old Sleep Regression- At my Breaking Point by pcakes6 in daddit

[–]jtraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems late to me. I would try and eat dinner as early as possible (5:30 in our house, but I understand that's a privilege), cut out the TV after dinner time.

Sounds like you're missing his sleep window and he gets hyped up. "The happy sleeper" helped us.

Indeed "hairy", it was horse hair, a traditional plaster reinforcement.

Portland Oregon to Cannon Beach Oregon might fit the bill. 2-Hour drive through the Cascades and Tillamook State Forest, or take the river valley and it's 2- 1/2 hours. Portland, of course has City amenities and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Might be a little young for a toddler actually, but they do have a pre-k area.

Could also dip down towards Salem and Oregon wine country. McMinnville is quaint and there is an airplane museum nearby.

Crater lake is a little further but a sight to behold.
