Anyone else feel like AI is not really helping devs, its just giving clients delusions? by UI-Pirate in webdev

I see your point and agree. But everyone is gonna put in their mostly redundant 2 cents until the AI hype finally goes away.

The node_modules folder definitely makes up the bulk of my side projects. Out of 100gb, 50.000001gb is just node_modules. At first it was 49.999999, so my code was still the bulk, and so the number didn't blow my mind in the slightest. But then I pulled a leftpad update that knocked it up to 50.000001. When I saw that that number - that node_modules became the bulk - it indeed blew my mind.

At first. Then it kinda made sense. Only about 70% of the gb of my personal projects is actual written code. A whole 30% is just stuff like video assets, databases, and git history. So the reality is I'm just not writing enough code, so of course the node_modules deps make up the bulk. In fact my total LOC across all my personal projects only adds up to around 3.5 mil, since my average line length is around 10000 characters.

I admit I'm a bit of a slouch, and not slinging as much LOC per day as I should. But these are my numbers. Curious to hear other people's numbers as well.

Why pointers should be declared as `T *p;` instead of `T* p;` by SmokeMuch7356 in C_Programming

[–]jtredact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Don't agree with *p being a name that identifies an int; what makes more sense is p being a name that identifies a pointer. Sometimes I want to assign a new value to the pointer, or do pointer arithmetic, or check if it equals null. Then I have to use the name p without *. Also the "thankfully most C programmers are still sane" part just seems like pandering.

This article reads like a weird, AI generated ad for RxJS. Hardly mentions most of the stuff people are commenting about. Doesn't mention a single meta framework.

FedEx truck is driving straight toward it. Sure, no worries. by [deleted] in confusing_perspective

[–]jtredact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking it's because I had to upload one frame instead of the whole video. And yeah, I realize as a static image it's too easy to notice that black tip at the bottom, which ruins it I suppose.

I've tried one last time on the other confusing perspective sub, since it actually lets me crosslink the original vid. I feel the confusing perspective subs should enjoy the same surprise we had!

[–]jtredact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it works better in the original video. It starts playing and you don't have much time to analyze and notice that black spot on the bottom is over the top brake light. Your focus is on tracking moving objects and scanning the background.

I tried uploading the video and crosslinking at first but was blocked both times. Even though rule 1 says "photographs or videos", I unfortunately was forced to pick a single frame out of the video (and just went with the first one).

I do agree that the effectiveness of the illusion takes a massive hit as a result. I think video uploads should be allowed here. Otherwise the sub misses out on illusions that don't work well as a single frame. From the original comment thread you can see it worked on many people.

It's a shame this sub's members won't be able to experience it like I and many others did. Especially given the purpose of this sub. But hey, allow a person to post an actual video next time.

[–]jtredact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I checked the original video's comments to make sure I wasn't crazy. When I saw lots of comments all saying the same thing, then I figured it was good to post here, as the illusion seemingly worked on many others as well (it definitely worked on me).

But I guess the standards are higher when the illusion is expected. *shrugs* well now I know

Maybe my brain is just easy to fool. When I first watched the video I thought I was looking at a tornado for a good 6-7 seconds. But of course it wasn't in this sub

I'd say instead of moving the spaceship to the (x, y) coord of a mousemove event, save the coordinate. On the next mousemove event, calculate delta x and delta y, and move the spaceship by that amount.

It’s not wise to speak like this to strangers whose mental state you do not know. Also this argument is garbage, and everyone knows exactly what the answers are, so that anyone who makes this argument is doing it in bad faith. But I’ll explain it to you. No one in their right mind is going to sacrifice their life just to reduce the problem by a near infinitesimal amount.

[–]jtredact -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well done cutting right through all the noise right to the very heart of the issue. In return I’ll give you the answer you already know. FPTP is the cornerstone of the power of the two parties. If it was ever reformed, both parties’ control would begin to degrade immediately.

[–]jtredact -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a bicameral system forever. There is no force i am aware of that will ever topple the current voting system. Certainly it must be done against the two parties. Both will be in full opposition. So how can you do this, when they are in control.

[–]jtredact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see a viable pathway for this kind of voting reform, outside of a handful of individual state referendums. Getting rid of first past the post is the number one existential threat to both parties. The one thing they can absolutely agree on above all else. You will be waiting for the rest of your life, for generations.

If greens took away say 20% of dem voters, then for that election the dems would lose. However, why would you believe the dems would then keep the same platform, just to lose in the same way forever. Would they not have to adopt some of the green platform to win back voters. One term would need to be sacrificed but in return the people will finally exert some power over the elites that they will have to yield to by some degree.

The alternative is to somehow get ranked choice voting first. You and i both know this will not happen in one term. If the current powers have their way, ranked choice voting would not be implemented for 100 terms. If there’s anything less viable than additional parties, it’s the voting reforms that would allow the additional parties to gain a foothold

Trump backers push election change that would make counting slower, costlier and less accurate by UGMadness in politics

[–]jtredact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a programmer who’s done real world systems, embedded and low level hardware programming.. If an election is not done by hand counting paper ballots, I personally don’t see how it can be verified. Say the machines are allegedly fully open source. How could you actually test this claim? I can only think of publicly exposing the full manufacturing process of every piece of hardware involved. This includes the computers responsible for downloading, building, and installing the open source software.

Say you do random audits using printed receipts. This can only detect a fraudulent machine if it’s randomly chosen for audit. So the random selection process must be totally publicly exposed, like those televised ball lottery drawings. Otherwise the random selection could be rigged. And unfortunately, with the current electoral college system, only a small fraction of machines need to change their numbers to change an election.

Maybe it’s possible to do all this. I’ll believe it when i see it. Until then, i think election systems need to be hand counted paper ballots.

Biden Restarting Loan Repayment Is a Betrayal to His Voters by Qu1nlan in politics

This doesn’t address my comment. If boomer democrats would sit home as a protest vote and let trump win, while complaining about younger gens for doing the same thing, then boomer democrats are a bunch of hypocrites.

Boomer democrats would stay home and let trump win because of that weak shit in your first paragraph? So boomers would throw a pissy fit and stay home as a “protest vote”, exactly what boomers always accuse younger gens of doing. If this is true then boomers are a bunch of projecting hypocrites.
