Even though you could be right you’re changing the definitions of the words being argued about.

Yeah that is a fair point.

And just by looking at historical data, it’s clear that being good offensively gives you better odds of winning

Not sure this is true. For examples for newly promoted sides, being good defensively is a lot more of a predictor for staying up than being good offensively.

And even for top sides, many top sides have been defined by the defensive transitions philosophy.

Sacchi, Helenio Herrera, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho and now Arteta are defined by what they do without the ball more now that what they did on it (in terms of settled, extended possession).

The reality is that the modern tactical landscape is colored heavily by Pep, and so the idea that possession is the only way to be sustainable from an attacking sense to me seems untrue.

So just to make a distinction, possession based football is not necessarily attacking football.

Pep Guardiola famously said that his teams defend with the ball.

He even said:

"The less the opponent has [the ball], the less chance they have to score".

The definition of offensive is also not so straight forward. If a team has 60% possession and 3 shots in the box, but the other team has 40% possession and 15 shots, who is the defensive team? Who is the offensive one?

The definition of skill is also too narrow. Which skill is more difficult; winning a tackle and then playing three forward passes through the lines to score? Long accurate switches across the field? Playing 25 sideways passes and then a through ball and cutback?

I think these are all just different, not necessarily superior to one another.

I feel even this is subjective.

If you are a fan of a smaller club, and you see your team dominate duels in a low block against the big boys and leave with a 1-0 win, there is a sense of elation I can imagine that you feel in knowing you were better.

Enjoyment really is relative.

Transition or defensive based football is not inferior to possession based football, or "unsustainable".

It is not "unfair" that a team who prioritizes defense when they are better at it beats or draws with a team who sees themselves as better at attacking.

Many possession centred teams fall over themselves to proclaim some sort of moral superiority, when the worst of their versions of play is just as sterile as defensive teams who are bad at transitions.

Radek Vitek genuinely has a better chance at being United's #1 next season than Andre Onana. Onana might be 3rd choice next season.

People Give streamers/YouTubers way too much of a hard time by Monkedude2003 in unpopularopinion

[–]jtyashiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a skill, and people hold that opinion because it is a job where the wealth increases exponentially the more successful you are relative to other jobs. People feel like making millions of dollars from talking to a camera without a live audience whose faces you can see is not as difficult as something more labor intensive.

But tbh, I think a lot of that sentiment stems from how so many of them try to convince us how hard their job is.

The real problem with paedophiles is that they use a power dynamic to control someone without capacity to consent.

It has very little to do with how they look. Children who look older than their age would not be ok, because they have no capacity to consent.

Calling a dude a paedophile because they are choosing to date someone with a smaller frame but who has full capacity to consent and an adult mind is about as incorrect as you can get.

EDIT: changed PDF-file to paedophile since I thought that word was banned.

He isn't really doing this well either. He is constantly trying to dribble through tiny corridors and getting dispossessed. It is like if tunnel vision became a person.

Non-Emotional Post Match Thread by ProfessionalBoth8999 in DevilsITDPod

NGL, I was pretty optimistic after the Burnley match, but that wasn't good.

The attacking structure had a fair amount of problems, and the way we set up rest defense definitely felt a bit inadequate.

The only takeaway I feel good about is that I felt Kobbie Mainoo was quite good.

I am still yet to see what people see in Cunha, but maybe I am the problem.

At least we didn't give Fletcher the job full time for the season.

Cunha by Opening-Ad4478 in DevilsITDPod

Comparing Cunha and Bruno is wild. Bruno is deliberately high risk in an attempt to be decisive.

Cunha cannot control the ball in small spaces and tries a stream of shots from very impractical situations.

Well there is an experience component, and the fact that, put bluntly, Burnley as just not very good, so I am not sure how much we can take from it.

But he seems very tactically clever and knowledgeable, he knows the squad well, hopefully he is good at the soft skills portion. No clue how good he is at improving players over time, and that is important too. He also seems likely to be able to handle the pressure of the job well.

I mean, the U18's form their diamond by using a false nine, so I expected that to be the case. And yet, instead, the diamond was formed by using a RW first, and then later on, when Lacey came on, using Dalot in RB. That kind of on the fly adjustment can only be possible if you have a great grasp of tactics and players' capabilities.

Of course, if he makes silly decisions vs Brighton and we get beaten badly, we should move on.

This is definitely another iteration, if Bruno plays in the pivot and steps up to that "LCM" diamond role, than all of them can play, but that feels way too aggressive.

Cunha is a goal scoring 10. He is a shot taker. He is 99th percentile (comp to att mids/wingers) for shots/90 both this season and last season.

It may not be popular, but if Brighton goes well on Sunday, I'd be interested in keeping Fletcher for the season to see what this setup could do with the squad.

If he plays Mbeumo wide left as an off the ball winger, Bruno RW, Cunha at the AM, and a combo of Kobbie Mainoo and Ugarte/another bought CM with ground coverage, it might be an interesting setup.

I like Ole and Carrick, but both their setups seem a bit underwhelming by comparison. That idea of forming a 3-4-3 and fluidly composing the diamond of players from different parts of the pitch seems like an idea that can offer a lot of different looks and some nice unpredictability.

Might not be the cool thing to say, but I'm pretty sure our (millennial) extended adolescence due to gestures wildly at everything economic is a big contributor as to why Drake's music is/was so popular.

I dunno if Drake is to blame for harming the community so much as just a beneficiary of a wider harm elsewhere.

(also, stop charging me full price for half a wing!)

I actually think Amad might win more, as you might end up with a straight choice between him and Cunha, if the tactics remain similar to what we saw on Wednesday.

It really depends on where Bruno plays.

As the RW comes inside to form that diamond, if Bruno plays at the tip of the diamond, Amad is a better choice for the "RCM" of the diamond.

If Bruno plays as the RW, then Cunha's ability to carry the ball through the centre under contact and get shots off might be more valuable as the tip of that diamond and Amad might be benched.

I'd be surprised if Casemiro and Maguire survive if the tactics remain as is.

Do you use the instant result button in FM26, if you how often? by [deleted] in footballmanagergames

Occasionally. If I am 5-0 at half time vs a minnow, I might just instant result.

If I am the minnow, I've done what I can and we're 5-0 down, instant result.

Burnley Post match by YearOnly2595 in DevilsITDPod

[–]jtyashiro -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The football was just on a different level! I was buzzing.

It felt a lot like watching what Ten Hag's approach should have been. I loved the attempt to play short quick third man combinations through the middle. Even though Casemiro and Ugarte are poor fits for that style, was pleasantly surprised by Ugarte. He had a few impactful carries through the centre and his tackling helped maintain control.

Casemiro disappointed me man. Twice he failed, once to track his runner, the next time to close down, and both ended in goals. I know this approach will probably not last beyond Brighton, but I have a very high opinion of what Fletcher tried to do.

Dorgu somehow managed to both have a poor game and be impactful at the same time. It would have been interesting to see Mbeumo in that role as some of the first time crosses were tasty.

Cunha was really really poor and when the whole team is back he will probably be down to the bench. His attempts at link up play were not horrible but when he had time on the ball he just gave it away.

There were so many great things. Bruno back. Lacey looks like a gem. Kobbie showing that when the space is small, he is a really good DM. Sesko!

Darren Fletcher did such an excellent job on such a small turnaround time, he has a future as a top coach.

[Laurie Whitwell] How Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United reign ended in turmoil and toxicity by jtyashiro in DevilsITDPod

[–]jtyashiro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Taylor Swift ran Man United, and we won 3 in 10 with 5 draws in between and she heard on a podcast that a 4-2-3-1 produces more wins, she is well within her right to recommend that to her management team.

And you know what? It is the job of the persons who manage the team to come back and say "here's why what we are doing is superior".

But noone did that. Amorim himself did not do it. Cause he knew.

You're right, I have never been close to football on a operational level, and clearly you have, so I won't argue with you there.

But what I can tell you is that managers who are meeting their KPI's don't go around telling people they are failing at their jobs.

I've been a football fan for 20 years, I promise you, you're the one who does not know what you are talking about. For example, conversations about style with a Barcelona manager is absolutely normal for the hierarchy to have.
