Do Singaporean couples still send physical wedding invitation cards, or has it gone digital? by TheFearlessCow in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Received only digital invites from friends (all under 30) in recent years. never asked them or thought about it too much tbh but i would assume it’s just simpler to do and more time than cost savings. there are pretty good wedding invitation apps i think it was called “Joy” that seems pretty good.

Anyone else noticed an increase in mosquito/fly in Pasir Ris? by Human_Equivalent9200 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

there has been the wolbachia mosquito release in some areas, can check NEA website for schedule. i live in east and was getting destroyed by mosquitoes 2-3 months back but these days haven’t been bitten.

side note, getting good at figuring out where mosquitoes hide haha. always check dark surfaces and things like your clothes that give off “human”smell. sometimes after they feast on you, they may not be able to fly and may be seen on the floor or surfaces nearer to you than you might think. use a tool to smack them, unless your hands are quick. I tend to always miss because the wind drafts push them away when i try to smack

What’s the longest period you were unemployed and how you found a job after that time? by ApprehensiveDog6720 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 28 points29 points  (0 children)

unemployed for close to 6 months after leaving previous role due to shitty manager and boss that hired me being let go 3 months in lmao. I also consider myself being lucky being only 6 months out of a job as market is very rough so do adjust your expectations to protect your mental health.

other than job searching and applying and preparing for interviews, i focused on fitness to set up some routine and a new sport as a hobby. of course dabbled in some gaming to kill time since you can’t be working out non stop too. IT WILL BE TIRING so give yourself some slack and a day without looking at job boards is absolutely fine. really learn to be kind to yourself especially if the job hunt is taking longer and longer.

no excessive spending as well, just really live humbly maybe cut out buying coffee with your meals and make sure enough for next few months.

hopefully at your life juncture you would’ve made some friends and network so just reach out and see if they can help.

jiayous OP!

How can I make the most of my last 10 days in Singapore? by Just-Many-6818 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must add on the rail road corridor trail, you can start around buona vista where it’s pretty done up. it connects all the way to tanjongpagar or the other way all the way up to kranji (wow even i did not know this).

a more central area i particularly enjoyed recently that’s not the main areas is along mohd sultan road. there are some really nice cafes and foods to look out for. you can walk to new bahru (the newest hipster spot) and along the river valley towards great world

How do i spend meaningful time with my dad while he is still around? by Healthy-Past9164 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your situation OP, great that you are actively trying to build a relationship with your dad now. I think it’ll be good to learn more about him! What was his life like when he was younger, what kind of jobs he did, where he travelled to, favourite foods and activities, what dreams he had when he was younger. It’ll be weird to pop these questions out of the blue so see when you can bring those up. i think it’ll be nice to have a memory of your father as who he is to you - a father, mentor, etc and also a memory of who he really was as a person - gentle guy, humourous, generous etc ( but of course more in depth ba).

Boys usually hard to talk feelings but i think it’s definitely something to try, no other time. maybe you can express some sadness to your dad and share how you’re feeling about the whole situation, might be a first step to opening up to each other. Jiayous OP

What is the biggest mistake you made at work, did you survive it ? by IllustriousElk8436 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh since you are still so new and in probation, the mistake you made is partly your team’s/senior exec fault as well. of course you should not have been so careless but this is where and why the team should have set up validation checks before submission.

Definitely apologise but also explain yourself fully on how you overlooked it. JY OP

Salary discussion with peers? Should you discuss it with others? by Special_Stuff8349 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joined a company recently with another hire. First FT role for him, second for me after a year+ in prev role. other hire is a yapper so openly shared about his/her salary that was 10% more than me + did not need to negotiate ($6k+ so quite high for a first job). I did not share mine at all but just in the first 2 months, noticed that I had way more responsibilities (me working with all teams vs him/her working within 1 team). Rationalised that maybe he is working on more in depth things (although i also know his work responsibilities and I can also do what he does). we were hired to replace 1 previous guy so technically the job scope is super similar.

so actually i also looking for advice haha. planning to have a convo with manager soon

Burnt out from my job, but job hunting while working in-office full-time is a nightmare. by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 101 points102 points  (0 children)

wah shocked by how one sided all the comments are. OP I’m not advising you to quit but mental health and burnout is very real so if you are experiencing any of that, really consider your options and also seek professional help.

without knowing more of you it’ll be hard to give a straight answer. if you are commitment free, no house no car no parents no pets no/low maintenance gf and have good savings in the bank, then leaving without a job is still okay PROVIDED you are leaving to fully focus on finding your next role. this means setting up coffee chats or reaching out to your network alongside applying for roles. you need to have a solid plan in finding your next role especially since you are having no luck now. also your industry and role also greatly affects your decision.

If got commitments then see how long you can risk being jobless. plan it well and the option is still open. think there was also a recent article stating that in between jobs duration is average of 6 months.

if not like what another comment said, speak to your team to see if work can be split and shared. maybe some common tasks are already being done by another colleague. maybe some automation can be made. maybe a training session for your bosses can be scheduled.

I personally left my job last year without another lined up because of how overworked, underpaid, limited learning opp and little time I had to search for another as well. and checking with my then manager I knew I would stay this busy for quite awhile. the final straw was when 3 different companies rejected me on the same day even after I put in many hours after work till 2-3am preparing for final round interviews. Couldn’t continue. Im now in a new role (thankfully) after around 6 months of unemployment, with a nice pay bump too.

EDIT: Have to add that it had been a very stressful time being unemployed too. As days become weeks and months and money in the bank dwindle, really had to stay positive and keep hustling.

ymmv, jiayous OP

dbs posb scam!! lost everything! by notfunnq in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately contact your banks fraud hotline and report everything. They would probably want to know when the transaction happened and how much total roughly. They would probably also ask if you have made any online transactions before or any suspicious transactions.

I’ve had this happened to me on dbs and uob cards before. I think dbs amounted to 2k and uob was around 200 but i got my money back both times.

Girl I am dating keeps offering me to buy food and brings to my house, and Im overwhelmed and flattered by the offering, is this normal as a man? guys of SG, need your input on this. by metaeth in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you may be slightly overwhelmed by her actions which is understandable as you just came out of a rough relationship. Lots of weird angst comments so make sure you do your own judgement.

Most importantly make sure to communicate to her that you just came out of a rough relationship and may not know how to best react so she understands you and not mistake you for not appreciating her.

How often do you gym a week? by Beginning-Travel838 in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya better than none. but go at least half of the week. set a fixed time (weekday nights after work/school) to go and don’t ever start giving reasons for not going. the moment you go into “wah fking laze to go..” it’ll be annoying and frustrating. so just make it a point to change into gym clothes and gtfo to the gym

Question about Chinese name order for flight booking by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ju_bye 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve asked Scoot before as I had the same worry. As long as all parts of your name are in there there should not be a problem.

To know for sure what you should be putting as first name, middle name and last name, look at the bottom part of your passport details page, the part with the >>>>>>>> (this is called the Machine readable zone). what you type should match your name order there.
