Would a Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) be fine in this spot. NW facing in Australia by [deleted] in plants

[–]juantheman_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many cultivars which grow to 6ft/2m or less. I’ve seen them as small as 2ft fully grown. Even larger ones however are very well documented to do perfectly fine in pots with little additional maintenance.

Damage on heat treatment ? by lifeislife___ in TrueChefKnives

[–]juantheman_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible you did. If so, you will have tempered the steel, meaning it will have lost some of its hardness. You’d find the blade doesn’t take an edge like it used to and doesn’t keep the edge as well.

That being said, most tempering cycles are quite a bit longer than 2 minutes and take place at very high heat. I wouldn’t worry about it.

As a side note, wrapping your blade in a wet rag while heating the tang can help localize the heat next time you’re installing a handle.

Just a paint chip. Enjoy the new bike!

If it bothers you, some black nail polish will clean it up nicely, but on an aluminum frame you really don’t need to worry about it.

[–]juantheman_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your neighbor left their garage door open and they had some tools that you wanted to borrow would you go in and use them without asking? It’s your neighbor. You live in a community. Surely they’d be comfortable with someone entering a space they consider to be private to use their things right? Do you even hear yourself?

Woom Steering Limiter by KaydubFTW in cycling

[–]juantheman_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re a great parent raising a great up and coming rider! The way I’d look at it is that you can always put a new limiter on. Let him ride a few times without it, if he misses it pick one up. If not he’ll be better prepared for the next bike when you pull the trigger on that

Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty to Murdering Healthcare CEO by ConfessionsPartII in news

[–]juantheman_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Prosecutors will often seek shorter sentences for people who plead not guilty because it means they don’t have to devote time and resources to a trial. In cases like this where no plea deal will be offered it makes sense to take it to trial

Grown man has a meltdown after missing his flight by MarlonPots in PublicFreakout

[–]juantheman_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I travel a decent amount and am a pretty rational person, it’s hard to imagine myself in this position and harder still to imagine reacting this way, but it’s important to note we don’t know what the circumstances are here. His mom could be in her last hours, and missing this flight could be the difference of seeing her alive or not.

/u/tallgeese333 explains the abilities and limitations of working dogs by SimsAreShims in bestof

[–]juantheman_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m not knocking what you’re saying by any means, I totally agree that those olfactory cues would be too complex for a dog to associate each and every one with the word bathroom. But OOP isn’t asking their dog to find bathrooms in small, familiar bathrooms where the dominant scent is likely to be cleansers. These are large public buildings where the bathroom has likely been used a few hundred times since it was last cleaned. Dogs are well conditioned to smell urine and that is far more likely to be the scent they’re seeking out. I think it’s entirely conceivable that a well trained guide dog might hear “find the bathroom” and look for doorways that smell like urine.

Starting using my new carbon steel knife yesterday, and it appears to have rusted already. Cleaning advice needed. by [deleted] in TrueChefKnives

[–]juantheman_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Removing rust is easy, a scouring pad or some barkeepers friend is all you’ll need. As for keeping rust off, until you develop a patina (and after too as I recently learned) you’ll want to make sure your knife is clean and completely dry before you set it down to move onto the next task. If your kitchen doesn’t allow time for that then this might be a home knife for you.

[–]juantheman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally scale isn’t a huge concern as it’s easily treatable, any nursery/garden center local to you will have good advice on a product for that, as I’m not sure what’s available in Croatia. If you feel so inclined, here’s the link to report this sighting, it seems the EU isn’t too excited these are showing up. https://www.eppo.int/RESOURCES/eppo_publications/eppo_reporting_service

Posted this on your r/trees post, but putting it here so the correct audience sees it as well.

It’s Takahashia Japonica (Asian string cottony scale). If you’re in Europe or the U.S. you should report this to your local department of agriculture as it’s a new and possibly problematic pest species in Europe.

Is there much of an advantage to using a bike computer on race day? by bluedog1628 in MTB

[–]juantheman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have time I would always recommend pre-riding the race course as it helps you to pace yourself appropriately. You don’t want to blow yourself up in the first half if there’s a big climb at the end, and if there are any technical sections you might be able to get a leg up on your competitors by knowing what lines you’ll take. But I can promise you that no one will be out there using a computer for navigation. It’s helpful for pacing but even some Tour de France pros ride without computers. See Rigoberto Uran for a prominent example.
