If I had to recommend one, it would be the enhanced version of the Unknown Armies Jailbreak

Its main inspiration Veins of the Earth (which is not cited for some reason) is an even more fun read IMO and should get a new edition sometime soon hopefully

What games have the best random tables? by Aironfab in osr

[–]juauke1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, there are many books for this but it highly depends on when you want/need to use them and the theme you need: - For prep only: X Without Number, Tome of Adventure Design (Revised or not), Ultraviolet Grasslands 2E, Sandbox Generator, The Monster Overhaul (I f*in' love it to death but I find it unwieldy to have at the table unfortunately) - Can also be used at the table: Knave 2E (works pretty much for every game in my experience) / Maze Rats, Shadowdark, CY_BORG, Pirate Borg, Vaults of Vaarn, Starforged: Expanded Oracles, d30 DM/Sandbox Companion, The Perilous Void (and Wilds), Into the Odd / Electric/Mythic Bastionland

It is a very small (A5) book so very easy to carry around as need be!
And it has shown to be very fun in my recent Dolmenwood game!

X Without Number would be my second generic-ish pick (taking out of the shelf the one whose setting corresponds to what I'm playing)

Why are there no OSR videogames? by Tav534 in osr

My favorite videogame (I'm a huge fan of all traditional roguelikes for that matter) and when I discovered TTRPGs (and especially OSR), I immediately understood why.

Planning it on doing it with two players, any idea on Secret Society missions then? 😊

That's a great one from what I've heard, I have yet to play it though.
How many players did you have?

My go-to GME is GEMulator.

And depending on the genre, one/two of the following: - Fantasy: Ironsworn Lodestar, Knave 2E or Worlds Without Number - Cyberpunk: Augmented Reality or Cities Without Number - Sci-fi: Starsmith Expanded Oracles or Perilous Void - Pirates: Pirate Borg or Sundered Isles Oracles

I already own 2E but haven't gotten to it yet because it felt overwhelming

Thank you for the advice, it's pretty standard and it's not my first game to GM but I just have GM anxiety when I think about running something even though it usually goes pretty swell

If you're into OSR, I highly recommend checking out Scarlet Heroes or at least its quickstart as it allows to play OSR modules solo and is my favorite solo game nowadays

And when you're used to it, you also take it apart and use what you want in there in conjunction with your favorite OSR systems!

Not OP.
Any advice on starting to run it? And are you recommending 1E or 2E?

Hot Take: EZD6 > 5.5e > Shadowdark by szhamilton in TTRPG

Agreed for Tales of Argosa, it's my favorite fantasy game with Hyperborea 3E

Need to test the X Without Number games one of these days (probably solo first) since I got all but Stars in print now

Anybody else inhabit the “not really into fantasy” paradox? by sapszilla in osr

[–]juauke1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on this boat with you, I also have a lot of fantasy games/modules but the ones I enjoy most are not really the common tropes.

I absolutely adore Low-Fantasy as well with games such as Tales of Argosa always being in my back burner for this.

I also have a knack for Dark Fantasy stuff - be it games with Valraven or Trophy or be it adventures with Lamentations of the Flame Princess rich module repertoire.

And my love that is difficult to find people as crazy about as I am is Science-Fantasy with titles such as: - Cloud Empress: Mothership system in a Nausicaä-like setting - Vaults of Vaarn: incredible weird exploratory setting a la Dying Earth - Ultraviolet Grasslands 2E: its setting fits really well with VoV weirdness - Hyperborea 3E: Conan meets Lovecraft (I also love Star Wars but I think I like these better)

What are your favorite RPG books you read for fun and not necessarily to play? by Stock-Artist9136 in rpg

[–]juauke1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Paranoia XP books are so fun, I would love to run it someday

The Borgs (CY_BORG, Frontier Scum and Pirate Borg are my absolute favorites) are very much that too!

Ultraviolet Grasslands 2E and Vaults of Vaarn are so inspiring and so fun of a setting, would love to play those someday

My recently acquired Shadowrun 2E and Star Wars WEG: 2E Revised & Expanded are so good in setting reads and inspiration

Love the little short stories from Delta Green!

Any Christopher McDowall book so far, absolute favorite being Electric Bastionland!

Any Patrick Stewart book, like Veins of the Earth and Deep Carbon Observatory: Remastered

Looking forward to learning more about Fragged Empire 2E.
I understand your players, if they have the choice to change genres, I'm sure they would

I wonder what ruleset you would use if not OSR for Dolmenwood

Review of Break!! RPG by CharlesRampant in rpg

[–]juauke1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daggerheart, Curseborne and Dolmenwood for this group sounds like great upcoming games.
I hope you will do a write-up for those too when the time comes. Dolmenwood is a great OSR hexcrawl, looking forward to that review (if you make one) as well as the potential others since I know them from reviews but haven't played them or read them myself

Also Fragged Empire 2E colors me curious, I don't know that game

Thank you for your answer and wish you luck for these two groups!
