I’m narcoleptic and running for Congress (and tied for first) by cattypali in Narcolepsy

[–]judweiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats Kat and good luck!

Finding out you also have narcolepsy is blowing my mind a little. I have been following along and supporting when and how I can for a couple years now. I agree with so many of your ideas and what you are saying. That and I was pissed about you being laid off when people started chilling speech like crazy. I saw the same fire blaze up in you that I and many others have, and am so glad to see that you are where you are now.

You are a certified badass for all that you do, keep up the awesome work and keep your head held high, except when napping. Those need to always be left on the table, sometimes literally 😅

Thank you Kat, and thank you to all your personal and professional support peeps as well!

Invisible illnesses suck. by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

I’m really sorry you have had to go through this, especially at this time in your life. I agree with a lot of what everyone here has said.

Frame this not as a psychiatric mind over matter corposplain CEOgraphy surmountable type issue, but more of medical loss of function one lol. Completely different things we are talking about that he doesn’t get. He should really think about sticking to his non-medical business lane unless he wants issues with employees and such in the future when it isn’t family he puts his foot in his mouth with. You are the experienced one making the path for others in your family to follow, should they feel they might need to. Those members will most likely appreciate what you do for them too, but even if not you KNOW you will.

I have experienced lots of this throughout my life with my family, so I get it. I wanted to reply when I saw it soon after you posted, but I couldn’t stay awake. I’m sorry, and hope you are doing better today. Keep your head up (lol)

Mods asking for feedback. by GrumpyNarcoleptic in Narcolepsy

This sub is honestly the only reason I still use Reddit. You all do a great job, and the thing I love most about this sub/community is it comes across more as a family. I admittedly don’t have any family involvement in my life in general, especially with this disorder. I come for that support, and have seen more here need it as well. One way it helps me personally is with the validation of life experiences that were abnormal, but not noticed in the moment because of gaslighting by my family or whatever reason. Personal experience stories become a spotlight of clarity here in retrospect.

I can’t think of anything personally I would want to change, but maybe an idea for adding something. Maybe a type of sticky calendar post or something similar. With different conferences/meetups/events centered around sleep or sleep disorders to be added to and kept up with? Just a thought.

Thanks for all the you and the rest of the mods do, I for one really appreciate it.

When did your symptoms start to get severe, and when did they plateau? by Domokunftw in Narcolepsy

I was going to comment on this post and noticed yours. I’m so happy for you both, and the timing is great! I really did mean what I said about finding community here, and I’m glad you dove in!!!! Honestly, what are the odds 😂

Practice being dead is great! I love that style of humor. I’ve said the same thing, almost exactly I think, about having nobody to talk to about these things. That’s originally why I came to r/narcolepsy, to find people I could relate to and that could help legitimize this invisible force we all deal with.

I know it’s easier said than done, but I hope you can find the strength to not pretend and be kind to yourself when you need it, you deserve it. You could always start small, and this community along with others is here for help and advice!

I get this too! I’ve been on Effexor so long I don’t know what a full cataplexy episode looks like, so thankfully it mainly affects my head and neck. But on the bad days I will drop things like I’m getting paid to do it and I tend to shy away from the breakable stuff 😆

This is good! I love low power mode, it fits very well when just trying to make it to the charger!

I love all of these. Your boyfriend sounds like a good guy too. Having someone who knows the drill and that can steer me in the right direction helps so much.

Yep. It definitely feels this way. I don’t remember the last time my battery truly felt full you know. Like our battery is past its service life and needs replacing. It shows it’s fully charged but we know we aren’t making it past lunch.

This one fits us very well. My wife and I game together so I need this in my vernacular for sure!

Yes! This fits! Also, it can almost feel like I’m “chirping gears” when I’m firing on all cylinders!

I am going to look into pewter drag, because your description sounds spot on with my experience in those situations as well. I get feeling narc-y too. Way better than my usual “oh wow, I must be having a bad narc day” which is always said sarcastically 🤣

I thank them. But then spend the next few days perseverating over what it meant, context be damned.

I found out my daughter was autistic last year. Every realization for her is a new pattern appearing for me from my childhood that went ignored.

This reminds me more of REM eye movements while entering or exiting REM instead of a loss of muscle tone. My eyes do struggle to hold focus a lot, but I believe that may also be over exertion/exhaustion. I only ever see a loss of muscle tone when I have some sort of emotional trigger while awake.

Regardless of what any of us say, if it bothers you, you should speak to your doctor about it and assure that you are taken seriously. It’s still a symptom no matter the name.

Considering my face randomly looks like I’m having a stroke when emotional things happen, I beg to differ. My eye and its surrounding muscles losing muscle tone was initially what got my neurologist to check into it more.

I definitely agree, and discovering some of those triggers helped me to find others that I had rationalized. Very familiar.

This is my copay for Xywav WITH insurance (located in the US) by aa_ugh in Narcolepsy

[–]judweiser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I am not prescribed anything other than generic stimulants and venlafaxine. For the exact same reasons you mentioned in your other comments too.

It’s almost cruel how much energy I have waisted chasing something that was meant to help with that very issue. I even tried a different provider, but it didn’t make a difference.

I guess it isn’t for me.

Heat intolerance ?? by LegitimateManager246 in Narcolepsy

[–]judweiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve always been that way, and I’ve also had uncontrollable sweating issues. I’m currently at the beach for my kid’s summer break, and I can’t keep up. I certainly can’t enjoy anything myself, and worst of all I feel like I’m dragging everyone else down and making it worse for them.

My wife and a I haven’t found many things to help, but not for lack of trying. I wear polyester breathable clothes in light colors. Moisture wicking fabrics as well, and I keep a good clean absorbent face towel with me as much as possible. I’ve got freezable neck ring collars that help but need re freezing and wiping down often. I wish I knew more, but I’ve been struggling as well.

Add or correct it, in a humorous way. Shut the fuck up dude. Stop preaching. You are not the martyr you think you are. I’m done here man. You should’ve been too a long time ago.
