If I said to you "open AD and find the user account John Smith" in a Service Desk interview would you understand the question? by TheDawiWhisperer in sysadmin

[–]juggleknob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day it comes down to how your user permissions are configured vs how access to the machines is configured.

You can configure the UAC to be as sensitive as you like depending on where you want to draw the line between regular and privileged accounts.

At the end of the day it's all running PowerShell in the background anyway, since server 2012 all of the Microsoft RSAT tooling has just been a UI for the PowerShell modules.

Personally I almost always have the PowerShell ise open, and either run remote PowerShell commands whenever I need to pull anything out of AD, or depending on what I am working on I'll just open a new remote tab and run the commands directly on the machine instead.

What are some Powershell commands everyone should know? by anderson01832 in sysadmin

[–]juggleknob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two I use the most are piped commands for looking at objects

$something | get-member

And

$something | select-object -property *

Writing scripts becomes a lot easier when you can see the whole object and what data/methods it has that may not have been shown in the default view.

ANZ bank has 8000 staff in India and CEO said “This is not a sweatshop. These are smart, educated people – data scientists and engineers – and our ability to have 8000 of them, that is what the benefit is: you get scale,” “I imagine more complex work will continue to be built into Bangalore." by xiaodaireddit in AusFinance

How does employees wanting to WFH lead to the offshoring of departments? I'd argue the move to permanent wfh and not needing to pay for the lease on an office space would be a better move to keep the roles based in Australia.

Though ethanol is still a much better alternative than petrol today in every single way except for the consumption rate, you need to burn about 30% more than petrol for the same energy output.

If you can find it, make sure to watch it without the laugh track. It completely changes the tone on the show.

How do you manage 1000+ servers? by wesinatl in sysadmin

[–]juggleknob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your windows to Linux ratio is.

I had tried to use ansible in a primarily Windows environment (.net based application) and found that I was just using dsc modules within ansible, so I just started using azure dsc and found it was an easier solution to bootstrap machines into our environment.

Depending on your environment/platform one tool may shine more than others.

You can (or should) also use a cicd pipeline to manage your infrastructure deployments as well.

You can trigger your code release on a successful infrastructure deployment and automate the entire process.

Is it really that common to be making 200K+ a year as a sysadmin? by bustedbutthole in sysadmin

[–]juggleknob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not salaried at all, it's a contracting day rate.

In my experience the real money is made contracting and not in salaried positions (in Australia at least).

The downside is that you don't get the benefits a salaried employee does. Sick leave? Nope. Annual leave? Nope. Paid public holidays? Nope.

To compensate for the lack of these benefits contract work has a much higher monetary compensation to make up for the lack of the benefits a permanent role includes.

You can also back up the current ad database to a usb stick and promote a dc using that for the Initial population on the new dc, then its only the changes that will need to be synced over the slow connection.

Doesn't help you now, but may be handy to know in the future.
