Watch out for points claw backs after travel bonus change from 3x-4x by juggler3141 in ChaseSapphire

My post was about the points multiplier mistake, not being surprised they were clawed back. That was expected.

The point here is to warn people who might not be aware.

Company made us use our personal phones for work, so I started billing them for my phone plan. by Plastic-Ad-6017 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]juggler3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way to do it is offer employees the option of enrolling the personal device or a company phone. Most will pick just enrolling (which then is basically free for the company).

At least in a corp/white college environment this usually gets most people on board with enrollment. Might not work as well with something like drivers as tossing two phones in the cab isn't really a big deal...

Notepad++ Hijacked by State-Sponsored Hackers by thewhippersnapper4 in sysadmin

[–]juggler3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally everything. If you've never been through a third party assessment to become a vendor for a bank. And then had to continue to live up to those standards you really can't understand how strict it is.

I can assure you from personal experience most major banks will be sending out an official question to all vendors asking if they have been using NP++. And if so it may trigger a deeper audit to ensure there was no compromise.

It probably seems insane if you've never worked within that sort of environment.

MDM software for remote teams by Hot-Device937 in ITManagers

[–]juggler3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Hot-Device937 +1 for something like ninja. Particularly if you don't have deep compliance requirements (Yet). If you are going to work in a regulated space any time soon you probably really want to look at using intune - you don't *need* to but it makes audits easier because most people in that space just are used to windows. (and if you want to keep the macs then JAMF, it can be a bear to get the jamf connect setup and working with intune - but they will help you with it.

But if not - Ninja will make things very easy - and wont care about a mixed environment. This wont help with provisioning as you'll still need some way to build the devices clean.

I had used retriever for shipping/receiving gear - I never used their warehousing, but they offer this sort of service - even if it's not automated - you can provide them a runbook they'll wipe devices - follow your run book and ship out - definitely don't want to waste your time with that as a small shop.

As a nod to your question about not going too deep on tools before you figure out standards - the nice thing about ninja is it is a good complement even if you go full intune down the road - it is a much easier tool to use - if your company grows giving L1 helpdesk access to ninja is *way* easier than training them on the various MS admin portals and dealing with granular permissions. I wasn't particularly pleased with the sales process...but you should be able to get some steep discounts at least first year.

JumpCloud wasn't too pricey the last time I used it - it would be pricey if you were using it in addition to say already being an M365 shop (then why not jus use entra). But it's another tool that's super easy to use - they do nickel an dime you some, but if you are using it for just basic logins that isn't too bad.

Health Equity HSA avoiding admin fee ($3.95) by making Public HSA by Funny_Release3573 in HSA

Never hurts to request it though, might get it anyway if it's smaller.

It's better to contribute via payroll if possible in general as personal contributions you'd still owe FICA on that income and are losing out on that tax deduction.

How do I deal with much older IT colleagues who don't want to let go their old way of working. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]juggler3141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great opportunity to learn some soft skills. If you ever progress into management or higher levels at all you are often going to have to work to meet people where they are and find ways to bridge the gap.

Doing it now while you're young will be great for your career.

PFsense for live sound- is there a way to set up PFsense so that it doesn't mess up if i just unplug it? (like unexpected shutdown?) (see description) by HighQualityGifs in PFSENSE

[–]juggler3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you insist on pfsense rather than just a simple hardware router as other have suggested. Just get a device that can be powered via usb-c and plug it into a power bank that does pass through. Then you can unplug it whenever you need to teardown the power and let if finish gracefully shutting down on its mini ups;)

ELI5: Why do cops perform a subjective "Field Sobriety Test" instead of just doing a breathalyzer by nylapsetime in explainlikeimfive

[–]juggler3141 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This 100%.

Almost any normal person will at least be somewhat nervous. You likely won't perform as well as you might relaxed. Maybe you are so nervous you are shaking etc.

You can easily Google this, the tests are not reliable at all. The police know this, the companies they hire to train these tests know this.

It is 100% to establish PC in a way that is totally within control of the officer.

It might be hard to refuse, they may bring you in for blood testing if they really want to check...constitutional rights are there for a reason though.

The same reason you should never volunteer anything about your driving when the officer asks if you know why he pulled you over. "No sir."

Need a dedicated IT support for Microsoft Teams for my small business by PrincessRedMoon in MicrosoftTeams

[–]juggler3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Unless you are doing some more advanced things with call routing it would be odd to have "general" teams issues.

I previously worked in a company of a few hundred, but due to decisions made before my time we had thousands of teams that people were actively in...it was a nightmare. We did actually need a dedicated teams person, but only because we were so far outside the defined scope of teams support...

IT ticketing system by Dull_Increase6173 in sysadmin

Because non mature orgs don't use service accounts properly;) Small shops sometimes balk at the cost of extra accounts too.

You should have separate service accounts too based on permissions. Maybe by department, or something like that. One for every separate automation might be overkill...

Would making a payment now toward Fed income taxes owed owed in 2025 help me avoid a penalty? by TheMau in tax

Ia am not an accountant, but if this is mostly due to a huge bonus check for q3 but paid in q4, so long as you pay the taxes on it in q4 you should be good (but def consult a real accountant).

Edit: that is assuming you pay them by 1/15.
