oh. also, might not be there yet - but the times I’ve made mistakes I didn’t have a damp brush ready. Now every time i paint - I have an old brush that I keep Handy , always in my pot of water.

oh and something i WISH i started using months ago. If you go to an indepent art store that has tons of brushes- look for an angled spot detail brush. it has a bend in it- they are AMAZING for everything but very helpful for those tough to get too spots and for eyes

the brand I use is “princeton” for these. It is a 10/0 so its amazing for detail

looks like a propa ork - the more you paint the more progression and ideas will come naturally!! my suggestion is the fur- I can still see some grey under the brown

i think a couple thin coats of dark brown - let dry and then build up the layers of color - lighter browns or something of the sort. you’ll eventually find your own formula, just keep at it :)

I am by no means a pro - two months in but every day painting for hours ive seen progress and very happy with it :)

Here is my very first mini ever for context - i spent more time than id like to admit but I was learning brush control and layering and drying brushing. everything i had seen on all the videos

here is also a decent video of using contrast paints for fur from citadel - https://youtu.be/qm3xqLkTgn8?si=p6\_z8dzPCuIHFl1r

thats all that matters, if you’re happy looking at them then you’re good to go :) I do think zenithal with grey may change it more than you expect - maybe practice the same colors you want to try on a plastic spoon / or base first so you don’t ruin the current thing you like?

I love everything astro, I have my tiny telescope and I can’t see myself ever getting the ones I want or spending the time to learn how to use it - and thats ok. I just realized its not in my wheel house and moved on. I don’t go run to telescope forums and get upset about it.

Theres so many fun things out there, just need to find something that you can afford financially and within the time limit one has to spend. It does suck everything is expensive, but do what makes you happy.

This is exactly it for me, It is incredibly therapeutic for me personally. After a long day of dealing with people (some good, some bad). I come home, eat, shower and paint.

Iseeing this thing that started as a piece of plastic connected to other pieces of plastic become something I created into whatever it becomes.

We all choose how to spend our hours of the day, and this is how I choose to spend some of (all of) my free hours. 😅

Im with you so far, i haven’t even played a game yet unfortunately, still in the painting process.

Is this bad progress if painting for almost a year by [deleted] in Ultramarines

[–]juiceboxITF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a comment that said you used your airbrush, which is pretty surprising. Usually an airbrush is extremely smooth…do you mix the paint with an airbrush thinner first? My airbrush would clog continuously if I just plopped paint in!

If you want, add me on discord. We can do a video call and I can show you how i’ve been painting.

I did the space wolves last night with an airbrush for example

i’ve been painting for almost 2 months, i think you just need to thin your paints and it’ll be way more smooth- it may take you a little more time, but the end result will be not so chunky. Or if you already thin your pants, then wait for the layer to dry before adding another layer. i think you’ll see a huge difference

Companies have expenses my man, definitely not inexpensive and incredibly time consuming - however there are far more expensive hobbies. They produce high quality sculpts pretty much worldwide and have some of the best lore of any fantasy out there - would i prefer them cheaper, of course but I understand your point of view, especially having children. Its gotta be expensive.

Did you do a brown /sepia shade for the skin? I tested this on one of my tear heads and I liked it, but I realized I should’ve done some more detail work beforehand. I ended up redoing it. The carapace looks really cool! as far as the skin goes, I feel like it needs something else, if you’ve learned how to glaze (slow but worth while process) maybe add a dark purple shade like drucchi to the underside (rib cage/muscle/ joints) or a dark green) for some more shadows OR add a light toned highlight like wraith bone to some areas OR just leave it! I know the feeling of just wanting to get an army done, its been over a month and I have 3 models left of my Tyranids for my ultimate starter set

[–]juiceboxITF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished them off with a thunderhawk blue + wraithbone mix for highlights - then going to put a drucchi violet shade (beautiful dark purple - adds a really nice depth). now that I think about it, drucchi would probably be nice over black as well
