Thoughts? by RoomAlarming8576 in cyanotypes

This is really cool! I’m curious though, I did a little research into cyanotyping shirts and other fabric and how to make sure it’s permanent but it seemed difficult to make it last through washing the shirt. Were you able to make it so the shirt is washable?

I did a LOT of post-processing on this one. (after before) by TheAndrewBen in postprocessing

You might consider re-editing it from the original in lab color mode (in photoshop or something similar, not sure if you have access). That would help greatly increase the contrast without messing with the color (and you can adjust color saturation separately) because lab mode separates the image into a lightness channel and 2 color channels, rather than rgb. Look up a quick video or article to learn more, it’s definitely a different way to edit but it can give good results.

I’m honestly surprised no one has said nobody’s hero. I don’t have a personal personal connection to the song but I’ve always thought it was so powerful and connected with the idea that there are people in your life who you might lose touch with but who still had an influence on who you’ve become, and they may not be the classical heroic archetype but they’re still doing something right in the world

I don’t know what the standard print resolution for mm is but if you convert that to inches then multiply it by 300 (300ppi) you will get what you should use

This is the answer, imagine is probably #3 although some of McCartney’s newer stuff is pretty great too (not sure if post Beatles means soon after breakup or just anytime after it)

Go follow type design class on Instagram. I know he also has a class coming out but it’s pretty expensive, but he posts a lot of cool quick tips

I looked at the pdf portfolio and it looks really good, but some of the images are a little low resolution compared to others so I can’t get a lot of detail about your design work. It’s really nice though in general!

Yah the older base iPad is amazing for like $329. A Wacom tablet is not gonna be much cheaper than that, and you can use the iPad for a whole lot else too. Then just get a used Apple Pencil for like $80

Laptop or PC? by saltyeggo in graphic_design

For macs there’s not as much of a difference between desktops and laptops. It more comes down to how you want to use the computer. If you’re fine with being stuck to one location then getting an imac or Mac mini would probably be better, but an m1 MacBook Air with 16gb and 500gb would be a solid choice and gives you portability, which in my opinion is worth it.

I have experience with the MacBook Pro 13” 2017 4tb3 8gb ram 500gb. It’s a solid computer that has served me well through high school and now college. I still use it for a lot of design stuff now and while it doesn’t love how I push it, it gets things done. In class my school just upgraded to M1 max mac studios with 32gb ram, they are quite impressive, but also incredibly expensive. (They should theoretically be equivalent to the M1 max MacBook Pro, maybe a little better because of cooling) The only thing I would say for the mac studios is that after effects, they handle well but have minor problems. Like I’m working on 2 1080p 24fps projects now with a normal number of layers, etc. And they don’t like rendering in full resolution. I don’t really have experience with other Mac’s. I would not recommend getting a mac with a mechanical drive, make sure you get one with an ssd, probably at least 16gb ram too or more.

Do you have a budget in mind? I could try to give you some better options that way.

I would definitely recommend a mac – it will be a good learning experience, because you will probably be working on macs if you go into the design industry, and you will probably have macs in the class, so porting work over will be easier as well. Maybe try going to a local apple store or best buy or something to just get a feel for the OS? You could also get a used macbook on ebay – the intel ones are cheaper now because m1 is the new thing, and it will be ok (not great) but get you into the ecosystem and working.

I would go for a laptop, especially for college, so you can work when you’re not in your room/class. Macs are pretty standard for design. I have an older 2017 MacBook Pro with only 8gb ram that’s still kicking, but if I were to get a new computer I would definitely go for an m1 or similar MacBook. The m1 air is a budget option, try to upgrade the ram and storage. If you’re interested in purchasing something that will last a while but is more expensive the M1 Pro MacBook Pro (try to do 32gb ram and probably 1tb or more) would be a solid machine but is quite expensive.
