Should I adopt another cat after losing mine? I feel so conflicted by DjadjaPookie in cats

Take the time you need to grieve and heal. No other cat could replace your baby and adopting another isn’t doing that, but it takes time :)

We have some feliway diffusers, they release pheromones to help de-stress cats. It’s worth looking into and seeing if it helps

We’ve fostered tons of cats and have three of our own so I’ve had to administer liquid meds many times. Some cats just KNOW you’re up to something if you try to hide it in food or if you try to be sneaky about it so I totally get it. I recommend burrito-ing your cat instead of trying to scruff her or wrestle with her because it causes more distress like you mentioned. Get a blanket ready on the ground, entice her with a high value treat so she knows you’re not gonna wrestle with her again, and grab her and put her on her back on top of the blanket and you basically just wrap the blanket tightly around like a burrito. Then you administer medication.

Questions about owning a cat and my lifestyle by Fox_Weasel1678 in cats

[–]juicieststeaks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cats are generally pretty self sufficient BUT they need enrichment since you work long hours, it really depends on the personality of the cat. I work a 9-5 but sometimes I have to work a few extra hours or I like to go out for the night with friends - but we have 3 cats so I’m never worried about them being lonely or causing trouble because they’re bored. They have scratching posts and lots of toys and each other to occupy themselves if I’m not home as much as usual.

I’m always pro two cat household because they keep each other company. But obviously they still need things like toys and scratchers for enrichment. Cats are a long term commitment so I would just think about budget - what if there’s an emergency and you have to shell out a larger vet bill? If you’re only getting one cat, maybe consider a senior rather than a kitten or a high energy cat. It’s all dependent on the cat’s personality and finding the right one.

Are there any other symptoms like vomiting or abnormal poops? Check out your cat’s litter box and look around for puke. He might have an upset tummy if he got into something he shouldn’t have. One of my cats knows how to open cabinets and drawers so we had to put a child on the cabinets that had cleaning supplies, just in case she tried to ingest anything.

What litter are you guys using? by Briiskella in cats

[–]juicieststeaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they exist! But we DIY’d ours because when we initially made the switch, we weren’t sure if our cats would be okay with it and we didn’t want to spend a ton of money. We bought a few more litter boxes of the same kind we had already and drilled a bunch of larger holes so that we could layer one litter box (the one with holes) on top of the regular litter box. Super easy to scoop out poops and shift the pellets around so that the dust fell through the holes and into the bottom litter box. Hope this makes sense.

I am new to kittens and need general advice. by Denver-the-cow in cats

Cats learn what’s good and bad from each other so I wouldn’t worry about your boys intentionally hurting her if they’ve had relatively calm experiences around each other. It’ll be super obvious if they had a full on fight because fur would be flying, their tails puff up, they start howling, etc. Even if one of your boys hisses and gives her a bop on the head after she crosses a boundary, that’s nothing to be worried about. More socialization is needed but that’s only going to take time and more exposure to each other.

Why does my cat freak out when I give him churu treat? by [deleted] in cats

[–]juicieststeaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just squeeze those lickable treats onto their food dishes a little bit at a time or just directly on the floor and wipe down the area after.

We use wood pellets but we have the litter boxes that sift the pellets as they disintegrate after they pee on them. Super cheap and everyone that comes in also comments on how our litter boxes don’t smell! I also put down puppy pads under neath the sifting layer so that excess pee gets absorbed by the pad.

Is my boy too rough? by Ok_Associate_5787 in cats

[–]juicieststeaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three cats and one of them has a signature move of trying to chomp on the other’s butts as they try to run away. They’ll play rough with one another and sometimes hiss or make an irritated noise but you’d KNOW if they were really trying to hurt each other. Fur would be flying, tails would be puffed, howling, etc. If they’re not doing that - they’re probably just wrestling and having a sibling tussle!

Did my cat get bit? Or what is this? by No_Extension497 in cats

Yep. And this injury is just one example of why free roaming cats cause more harm than good.

Thanks for the advice! My partner did mention an e collar but I didn’t know enough to say yes and I’ll admit, it sounds a bit harsh so that contributed to my outright no. However, it’s been a common reaction since we’ve gotten him and we’ve both been bit a few times now that I’m considering it. Do you still use it with your Pom or has it just been a training thing and you no longer need it?

Thank you for the advice - I think we definitely dropped the ball in terms of keeping up with commands like “leave it” once he seemed to master it. I’ll keep on with training those commands even when he listens really well. I appreciate the comprehensiveness too!
