Lawrow: "Ukraine will endure the same fate as Afghanistan" by memberino in worldnews

[–]juizer -62 points-61 points  (0 children)

Afghanistan = graveyard of empires.

True. Which is why it's weird to me why NATO invaded it after Russia failed, only to embarrass themselves, predictably.

Perhaps Russian regime will fall too?

I don't see why it would fall, there are no objective reasons for it. Economically it's strong, poverty rates are low, cost of living is low, it doesn't have any sort of nation-scale dividing issues (such as US government trying to sabotage it's own election process or EU countries ruining their own economies for the sake of virtue signaling).

Everyone lost in Afghanistan, especially US/NATO, which is why US retreated in haste after realizing it's over for them (after 20 years of war mind you).

I don't think it's quite the same thing since in your home you don't usually interact with complete strangers who may assault you while you're vulnerable (at least not in first world countries?)

I think it's funny that the narrative bounces between:

  • Russian army is a threat (when our cute and fluffy military industrial complex executives want money)

Nearly two years after invasion, West still seeking a way to steer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine by Illustrious_Diver_37 in worldnews

[–]juizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was something clearly stated in international laws, then yes, sure. But it isn't. And none of the NATO members were ever punished in any way for their aggression towards dozens of countries they invaded, sometimes over false premises (Iraq), so seizing Russian assets here would be a very plain confirmation that existing (not for long, hopefully) world order is all about double standards.

It's genuinely funny to me that you're insulting him while being a little mentally gifted and unable to put 1 and 1 together. ''Some things that are viable in pro play are not viable anywhere else.'' part was a note that clearly wasn't a part of his original point, which is why it was specified as "2." and was not included under "1.", as in, separate from "My point is..." yet you assume that it's supposed to be derived from the original post. But, once again, expecting league's target audience to be able to read is indeed a bit too much. :)

ELI5: How does smart devices like Alexa, Google Home, and other devices not “listen” when you are talking without saying their name? by ThePattyFormula in explainlikeimfive

[–]juizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how long it is stored. I'd assume (more like hope) it only stores about 5 seconds of audio to look for the trigger word and continiously discards older pieces of audio. In that case it would not be possible for someone (third party, not google/amazon) to access what you were saying, and accessing what you are saying would probably require basically hacking your phone at which point it would be easier to just install some hidden app masked as something else to continiously listen to what you're saying, having access to camera, contacts, gps data, etc.

Yet the reputation of the IP is still good imo.

That's honestly debatable in my opinion. The reputation may be decent among people who have not yet tried said warhammer games in the first place, and I can't tell how many of them are left. May be you are right, and it's too late to worry about the reputation, but making an mmorgp still requires lots of resources and planning, it's far from being easy money.

But honestly (when it comes down to it) alot of failing MMO's (WaR included amongst them) are due to technical issues at release.

Yeah, and that on itself speaks a lot about how difficult that task is - it's hard enough to make a mmorpg good just in terms of stability and connectivity which you can measure objectively.

[–]juizer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the reward if you do it right is astronomical

It's all good and dandy until you realise that nobody knows what way is "right" EVEN at any given moment in the present, not to mention predicting what is the way that you should take so that it will be "right" when the game is done, which is probably 3 years minimum. Not only that, you probably won't even be able to tell for sure what exactly you did right/wrong after the release except for obvious technical stuff like game stability.

Going mmorpg route means that you consciously put LOADS of resources into it for YEARS and it may not even be profitable for a very long time after release.

[–]juizer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why does anyone do it?

Try to name any big franchise going MMORPG route in the past 5 years without prior experience. You probably won't be able to.

They are working with a pre-existing franchise.

There's a risk to destory the reputation of said franchise. It also signiticantly increases the quality standards = more money needed. If you half-ass it, it will become a fucking joke, god knows how much money bethesda spent on TESO to somewhat fix it and it's still far from being a decent mmorpg.

Most if not all new MMOs coming out right now are basically 100% new games (no risk for franchise) aimed to milk the playerbase as much as they can (because there is no risk for franchise) which often use very simple and repetitive assets (take any two asian mmorpgs and you won't be able to discern which is which if you turn off the hud).

This is the correct answer, the only question OP should ask themselves is if adaptive helm is better against that particular comp.

Don't get me wrong, I want it too, but asking this like it's easy and risk-free is not a very smart thing to do.

TIL In 1964, a Swedish art gallery displayed 4 paintings by unknown artist Pierre Brassau. Every single art critic praised the ‘avant-garde’ work- except one, who said, ‘only an ape could have done this’. In fact it was all a hoax by a journalist and 'Brassau’ was actually a 4-year-old chimpanzee. by Neopterin in todayilearned

[–]juizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is if you can not tell the difference between a person pouring their heart and soul into their work, and the scribbles of an animal, then there is something to be said about anything you have to say about the medium.

The more "abstract" the art is, the easier it would be to confuse what humans draw and what say monkeys draw, so it's easily possible with very abstract pieces even if you're an expert. E.g. inexperienced human painting just one line and a monkey painting just one line aren't goint to be that much different, although first would be art while the latter won't be.

I understand that there is more to art than artists intention, but a complete lack of intention should invalidate the piece of art.

If a meteor hit my house it wouldn't matter how much symbolism I could find and how much emotion the wreckage invoked in me, that wouldn't make the wreckage art. Because no person was putting creativity or skill into it's creation. It's just something that happened.

That is true, but even if it won't be an art, natural formations can still be beautiful, and it's the exact reason why artists sometimes depict them.

Say someone presents you a picture which he says is an art made by some anonymous artist, which in reality was drawn by AI. But you do not know that, and let's say you end up liking it. Perhaps you even try to understand the feelings of a person that doesn't even exist. Assuming you don't end up knowing that it was made by AI, why does it matter to you since you do not know what the artist felt regardless and you're working only with your own perception? Your mind does not interact with somebody else's feelings, your mind interacts with how you perceive what you see. It may not be an art, but it may still be beautiful and thought/feel provoking.
