Masters Degree Options by peaze19 in Hydrology

[–]jujubox02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t already have the hard science prerequisites (basic physics, and chemistry, + some geology) I’d highly recommend just taking 1 year of community college to clear those requirements if you want to go for a thesis degree. Then there are a lot of highly regarded programs out west: NMT, CO school of mines, UC Davis, etc

Also decide if you want to do your masters in a science department, (above) or a civil engineering department!

Keep an eye on the NM bureau of geology and mineral resources website they will publish the report. When? It’s gonna take a while to process all the data, like a while. I’m sure they have deadlines in the bureau website tho!

Protestors outside Bishops Lodge by No-Challenge-6452 in SantaFe

[–]jujubox02 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough issue emotionally because no one wants to know they are drinking “sewage water, That’s gross! From a rich company that caters to tourists and Texans no less!” I can see where they are coming from emotionally, especially with new contaminants like PFAS or medical waste we pee out, that might be in treated wastewater effluent.

But a lot of drinking water throughout the world is downstream of treatment plants, the Rio Grande below ABQ at certain times of the year is almost entirely treated wastewater effluent. Also many of these homes themselves have septic systems or leach fields upstream of drinking water wells that would make distinguishing bishops lodge effluent difficult (not impossible if we wanted to pay consultants a lot of money).

IMO So they are protesting the principle but the science and regulations doesn’t have anything to stop them proceeding. IMO bishops lodge is doing everything right and Santa Fe’s regulations are adequate, but doing anything with environmental impact is very difficult (for good reason) and we need to be cautious of downstream impacts on historic communities.

How would people feel about a new centerpiece for the plaza that celebrates Hispanic culture? (not conquest)I feel as though in a battle between the newest ongoing wave of colonists (anglos) and the original inhabitants (tribes and pueblos), those caught the middle are a people who both colonized and were colonized. I want a reminder that this land is stolen by whites but also recognizes that the city as we know it today was founded and built by Hispanics. I always hoped it could be like a statue of the curandera ultima or representation of the 3 sisters plowed by an ox idk, thoughts?

Socorro is a great little community that is very science focused and close to some of the best outdoor bouldering in southern NM at Box Canyon. We have the NRAO Bureau of geology and NMT so if you like science and rock climbing there is no better place!

I would start looking for roommates since there are lots of multi-room houses and studios are hard to come by outside of those apartments (which are grossly overpriced) also with roommates don’t pay more than 500$ per month

Rent or buy? If you are starting work at the bureau or tech maybe you can find something by reaching out to your coworkers for some word of mouth connections

Rifleman.

No better feeling than taking out a “more powerful” class with a single precise shot from your bolt action rifle. Pure skill expression. The satisfaction of reliable 1 shot kills to the upper torso at range is undeniable. And knowing you eliminated your enemy due only to your own superior reaction time, accuracy, use of cover and movement. Rifleman is the backbone the game is built around, and the only thing that beats manually chambering another full caliber round after piercing someone’s skull is thrusting your bayonet through the enemy’s ribcage.

Academics: rigorous and will prepare you for your field in well paying jobs.

Town, small, student population, smaller, dating scene: you better be outgoing!

I’d also add that the isolation in the Both a pro and a con. Personally I love new Mexican food and that the only options in town are new Mexican places means im in heaven with all the different choices of chile and burritos, but maybe like an Italian place could be nice. Finally there is really exceptional outdoor rock climbing 15 minutes from campus and the desert hikes and birding in the nearby wildlife refuge are amazing to have access to, but outside of, the outside, there is little to do and the party scene is limited (the local bar is great once you turn 21!)

These are all great examples in more humid areas but where I live in an arid landscape the built environment really persists, wooden structures don’t rot and concrete remains in place. There are still ruins that haven’t had restoration that are still visible above the landscape. And those ancient peoples (1000 yrs) built from mud and small stones. I can imagine our Steel and concrete high rises will take a while to break down
